Making a triple laminated bamboo backed self bow

Watch as I take you through the process of making a triple laminated self bow. The stave is hickory the core is IPA and the backing is bamboo. I also added some cosmetic touches on the backing with purple heart, walnut on the string knocks and also walnut on the handle. I will do another video on the hot box build, tillering tree and the string jig for making a Flemish bow string. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy.

The individual who labeled the video and describe it don't know there talking about because a self Bow can not be a laminated Bow. A self bow is one single piece of material.

I clicked on this video precisely to see if anyone had made that point. I guess someone thinks self bow means self-made bow. It reminds me of someone making a single piece of wood bow and calling it a "take down" bow because they thought a take down bow was a bow you use to "take down the bad guys!"

If it's laminated, it's not a self bow. Self bow refers to a stave made from a single piece of wood cut from a trunk or branch of the same tree and using the heartwood and sapwood to create the spring.

Also, what you're building in this video isn't a stave. A stave refers to a piece of naturally harvested wood.

If it's laminated it is not a self bow...... A self bow is a single piece of timber.

Nice looking bow! You could speed up the scoring process by using a fine toothed saw blade to draw across your boards instead of scoring with the razor knife, many bowyers use saw blades for that purpose. If you can you should probably go back and edit your title. By definition a "Self Bow" is made of one piece of wood with no backing of any kind. This is a fine example of a laminated bow, but it is not a self bow.

While never having actully made a bow, I have been an archer for many decades and have a collection of some very old true self bows and some 1950's era Ben Pearon long bows to see how they were made in the olden days, I also thought the fine tooth hacksaw blade pulled like a scraper to be both quicker and more uniform in providing additional glue surface. That being said, is cutting across grain direction, even minimally, an issue; at least theoretically?
