Mourning wear (from my research) was typically black from undergarments up. And I mean it makes sense. We Goths (modern constantly in mourning attire) don't wear white bras, so it makes sense they wouldn't put white underneath. And given how much organdy and crêpe was in mourning attire a white chemise or anything underneath would look sooooo bad under black sheer fabric. I have a 1903 journal that makes the same comment lol. Also in the 19the century collection I work with we have a couple black undergarments so agree there is extant examples. Also lovely piece!! I'm making some spooky frilly combinations for a mid Edwardian rational dress tea gown I'm going to make. You've given me hope that the black on black insertion lace isnt going to make me go cross-eyed.

I think one reason there isn't a lot of extent pieces is if according to a sewing manual I have their previously undergarments were just dyed I doubt they would have survived well. Black dye was so caustic and hard to up keep if the pieces they dyed made it fully through the mourning period I bet they were in bad shape. And what modern grandkid is going to keep grandma's super faded worn out grannies panties? Yeah. I get why there isnt a lot still around 🤣🤣

Ooh that makes a lot of sense, I hadn’t even thought of that! I definitely appreciate the information!!! Good luck with your spooky frills! I hope it turns out excellent for you!!! The black-on-Black wasn’t that bad for me, but I have young eyes and zero patience, so I didn’t look at it in great detail for that long!

@@jaspersgrimoire for sure! And I mean that's just from the sources I have. I'm sure there was lots of variables. Mourning attire was such a expensive investment, they totally could have had white too as a cost saving thing. I also saw one resource mention that white with black details was ok too. But I cant remember what period. Given there wasn't a lot of details in earlier Victorian undergarments that probably was in reference to Edwardian (likely as that's the era I typically muck about in). And most handkerchiefs I've seen fit that line of thought. And I've found what was true for handkerchiefs usually is true for undergarments. I think of them as mini undergarment examples lol. Anyway excited for the discord!

I also read (and i cant remember where) that many would rent mourning attire if they could not afford to have it on hand and had to go to a memorial or something. i would assume such rented items went into the rag bin or were broken up for other things when they began to get too worn to rent.

Fun Fact! There are plenty of examples of machinesewn homemade victorian/edwardian garments where you keep questioning if they were drunk or high when sewing. Straight seams that are anything but straight. Raw edges EVERYWHERE! And that goes for insertion lace stitching too. It seems like when talented homesewers used machine or handstitching it all looks so incredibly dainty and perfect and amazing and we get sewing envy but Museums and collectors seldom like to showcase the pletora of "Badly sewn Victoriana" that is out there. I am planning to make historybound edwardian inspired black undergarments. I was going to teach myself tatting to make a yoke but making a yoked insertion laced version might just be what I'll do. Thanks for the inspiration!

Look into all the Victorian rules of mourning wear. They totally leant into that mood wholeheartedly. Plenty of room to indulge all your gothic dreams.
