This is the best advice to give to anyone starting to sew. I've seen pattern books where the clothes haven't been ironed at any point during or after sewing and it looks so sloppy

@@kaylaglore3420 Before sewing, you have to wash the fabric to make sure it doesn't shrink, you might have to iron it after. During sewing, it's crucial to iron most of the seams to really open them, especially when you get seams that cross one another. It's also a lot of help in pre-forming some shapes, some curves or hems. And when the garment is done, you do a final ironing to take out the wrinkles and to make the hem flat for exemple. It makes a world of difference but it's a bit time consuming.

Once upon a time, when I was in high school many ages ago, I'd made a sleeveless lace up bodice for a medieval style peasant costume. (I loved renn faire) I loved the bodice so much that I'd sometimes wear it with my everyday clothing. I'd always get compliments and people asking me where I got it. Convos usually went something like this: Stranger: "That's an amazing vest! Where did you buy it?" Me: "Oh, thank you. I made it actually." S: "Wow! Really? What pattern did you use?" Me: "Uuumm, I didn't have a pattern. I traced my torso onto a paper grocery bag." S: "Wow! That's talent! Well, where did you buy the beautiful fabric then?" Me: "A thrift store actually. It's made out of brocade curtains and lined with a bedsheet." People were usually really surprised and impressed. But I was just a broke teenager figuring out how to make what I wanted on the cheap. And I'm by no means a sewing expert, I was just figuring stuff out on the fly. I always love when experiments worked out.

The surprise and awe comes from the fact most people will put little to no effort into anything, meanwhile you've "gone the extra nine yards" and made your own pattern, PLUS you thought "outside the box" and bought high quality fabric for cheep.

Out of the blue tablecloth, since its round already-just cut out a waist hole in the middle, add a zipper and waistband and done! Circle skirt!

Exactly what I thought, too! You could use elastic and avoid the need for a zipper all together. Use a coordinating (or contrasting!) color for the waistband if you don't want to be piecing it together from what you cut out of the middle.

I've been sewing for 45 years. First of all, NICE WORK! Good job on taking initiative. That's usually the hardest part. Next IRON EVERTHING, and IRON OFTEN. Ironing not only makes it look better it shows you where you'll have fabric issues. It also helps lock the stitches in place. When doing top stitching use a little longer stitch length, it makes it look a more professional, and you probably should put the zipper in definitely before the waistband and maybe even before you sew the sides seams together. Its just easier when you have to deal with all the extra fabric in the skirt. Hope that helps.😁

Buying a sewing machine was the best thing ive done! I have the Husqvarna emerald 116, and its got all you could need as a beginner. Ive had mine for about 6 months, ive bought curtains and tablecloths at the salvation army but ive yet to make any clothes completely from scratch, its a bit nerve wracking, ive just made a few bowes from scratch, but ive altered a few clothes, and its exciting to try new techniques 😊

Adventures of reusing material to make other things. (feel free to do them) (long post, sorry we do this a lot) My mom took old jeans that would get too small, seam ripped them out, and then trimmed and sewed them into jean blankets. We use them for picnics and watching fireworks or in the seats of the cars when we are dirty and don't want to rub mud on them. Machine wash and dry cus they're jeans. I stopped wearing retreat and camp shirts after I was no longer able to go (aged out, wish I could still go, was so much fun). I had at least 20+ and they had nostalgic value, but I didn't want to wear them as part of my wardrobe anymore and had them packed into one of my dresser drawers and taking up valuable space. My mom and I cut them out, as they had cute designs and titles of that year's theme, and quilted them together into a blanket. The quilt is now thrown over the guest bed and my aunts love it when they visit. I reuse a lot of my mother's old clothes. There is a red with yellow sunflower print skirt and blouse set that was hers that we tailored to fit me better (took in the waist a little, put on new buttons, lined it cus she had lost the slip skirt that was supposed to go under it and got rid of the god awful shoulder pads). A vintage puffy jean jacket that was my aunts (had to fix a hole to the outside in the pocket, made an embroidered patch of my initials and sewed it over and relined the pockets). Took a VERY 70s windbreaker that my mom had used when she went skydiving and turned it into a drawstring backpack (the thing is bright blue with bright yellow and red parachutes on it and had some pretty bad mouse holes in the sleeves from being in storage). I now use it for trips to amusement parks to hold my stuff cus it's so easily spotted with how wild the print is. Fixed up and took the hood off of my grandmother's old jacket, its a deep plum color with dark green and blue hot air balloons and looks super pretty but the hood just wasn't working, put some new buttons on too. Added pockets to a thick dark green woolen, full-length cloak my mom bought when she lived in Chicago to combat the wind. I wear it as a winter jacket and can say the number of awed looks I get walking anywhere public (10/10 I look very mysterious) can not be counted. School drama rented costumes for a musical (it was CATS, I've seen the movie trailer and I'm horrified, we did it so much better), they ended up being HUGE on everyone. We ended up custom making 30 spandex cat costumes (I still have mine) and 30 wigs and tails. Wigs were made from the feet of tights and unraveled, combed out chunks of the insane amount of yarn my mom had laying around the house (my grandmother had been a huge knitter and left us tons of yarn when she passed). Tails were similarly made but with the leg part of the tights. The company we rented costumes from loved the wigs so much they bought them from us, and our school won an award for best costumes. Repurposed these really thick light blue curtains that were too short to fit the giant windows in my house but just long enough to make my last prom dress, used some old grey sheets that were for a bed size we no longer had to line it. The theme was The Great Gatsby so I had a high low dramatic ruffles skirt and a plunging neck bodice. Got so many compliments and no one was the wiser that I was wearing curtains and a sheet to prom. Made a civil war dress out of a huge piece of floral printed fabric my mom found for cheap at a garage sale. Wore it for a halloween costume and even to middle school (History teacher LOVED it, Principal wasn't too thrilled about the hoopskirt, kinda hard to sit at a desk in one). My dad made really nice seat covers for my car out of the leather from a loveseat we were gonna take to the dump (one of the legs had broken clean off). Mom made a pet bed each for our dog and 2 cats out of some old stuffed animal plushies from my younger years that I was no longer attached to and was ready to donate or toss. Jessica (a very large black dog plush) now lives on as my black dog's bed that she sleeps in at night, she blends into it so well you can only spot her by the little pink tongue sticking out of her mouth. I have made at least 10 different, what I call, day/house dresses out of tablecloths. Dying is not nearly as hard as you think it is and you can even paint it on to make messy style watercolor flowers. Plus they're so light and airy that I stay cool in the hot summer and can float around the house like a fairy and not have to wear pants. There are so little seams (shoulder seam, neckline hem, side seam, bottom edge hem, done) and its like a 1 size fits all cus I patterned them to be big and billowy.

Hey Rachel here is a hack that I use when checking to see if table cloth, curtains or bed sheet is big enough to turn into clothing. I will unfold the fabric and fold it into half length wise and half width wise so that it is now in quarters. I will then take the longer fold edge and have that run vertical. I will hold it up to the center of my chest to see how much fabric will cover half of me and if it wraps around to my back that means there is more than enough to make a shirt of the fabric.

I would like to send you a set of “Hook & Eye” that I found among my great grandmother’s sewing stuff. She was a seamstress in N.Y. During WWII. There’s a hole bag of them, and I do not mind parting with one set. I believe these were designed as a perfect solution to the pucker problem on the skirt. My grandmother (Born in 1908 and no longer here, unfortunately) once told me that she hated doing buttonholes. She learned to do it by hand when she was in school. Every time she had to make buttonholes, she remembered what a teacher had said that had hurt her feelings: "Your buttonholes look like pigs' eyes." So you're not the only one to fight with them. Next time, include bed sheets in your search! I love sewing with bedsheets, especially because I'm plus size and finding a piece of fabric big enough for a tea or floor length circle skirt is really hard, but a sheet is perfect. Also great for quilt backings!

buttonhole spacing is the easiest thing to fix! you can just move the buttons around to match the holes :)

Where it puckers on your skirt, sew snaps. Don't pull the thread through the front of the material, instead use a hidden stitch. No sew velcro could also work.

It's always good to be able to make things out of bed sheets and table cloths! I'm making an Edwardian tea dress and bought a few cheap lacy table runners for the lace - you can't even tell! Plus with cheap fabrics, you can make mockups of clothes and save money up for nice fabric (I like to buy twill from FabricWholesaleDirect that's nearly $4 a yard so you can buy a lot of it on the cheap - the quality is better than anything you'd get at hobby lobby or joanns, and the quality is high! You can make nearly anything out of twill and it washes extremely well!) I also make paper patterns out of the brown shipping paper that comes in packages, or even buy a cheap roll of brown parchment paper - I've even seen people use cheap dollar store gift wrap paper! The point is, you learn a lot when you can't afford the majority of things - I know I did and still use my techniques because they're cheaper and less time consuming!

I'm looking at it now, and it almost looks like a retro milkmaid braid hairstyle. I think she pinned her bangs back in a curl, braided each side (french braid maybe?) and pinned them up on her crown. I'm still unsure however, but hope this helps! 💕✨

Sewing tip! Cut the pattern pieces an inch or two away from the actual cutting line before lying it on the fabric. Pin it on and cut along the normal line. Makes lines easier to follow! No worries tho, whatever works for you!

They look great and curtains and tablecloths was a great choice. For the pink pinafore, if you place your pattern on the fold of the fabric you could do the 2 front skirt panels as one big one so you don't have a center seem. For the brown you could have just done 2 buttons on the waist band then sewn the peices together and sewn the remaining buttons on as decoration to save you from hand sewing all the botton holes. Loved this project! Please do more!

You just aligning the waist band with the raw edge of the skirt and folding it over made my mind explode. I’m stubborn and haven’t been using patterns for things and showing a visible stitch on the waist band has been something I’ve reluctantly accepted....I’m such a novice....maybe I should look into patterns 🙈

Awesome start!! My mom is a talented seamstress, and the best thing she taught me is to always wash, dry, and iron your fabrics before starting on a project. That way, you get the truest cuts and (most of the time) don't have to worry about how the garment will change after washing, like gathering or puckering due to shrinkage.

Also if the fabric is on a board(like in the fabric store) you can count the folds of fabric on one side of the board. Every two folds is approx 1 yard.

Hello Rachel, and all of you sewists and creatives. Great tip gals for quick measuring yardage!! When you want to quick measure a yard of fabric: From the very tip of your nose, and with arms straight out from your body (T shape), holding the fabric selvage/fold straight from the tip of your nose to your fingers is very close to one yard. Yup, 20 years ago I didn’t believe it either. This fabulous mechanism has streamlined so much fussing in fabric stores, quick measure to go through your stash (my ever increasing nemesis), or vintage curtains, tablecloths, and the many, many remnants that constantly tempt us. Thanks for listening. Hope you gals can use this. And you, Rachel, can leave your tape measure in your purse or bravely at home! This is a vintage tip. So there.

Using circle tablecloths is my go to for skirts. Just cut out a hole, add a zipper and you're done. 😄 I use curtains for a lot of my Ren faire garb. So fun watching these kinds of videos. Thanks Rachel 💖

Some thoughts: you could try dying the pink fabric a color you prefer; you could easily turn the circle table clothe into a circle skirt; & I'd recommend getting a better sewing machine, like a Betinelli. Good start it only gets easier as you go.

I applaud your drive and your willingness in how to sew! It really is a skill that opens so many doors. I am also self tought in sewing too. May I give you a word on a few points? First is, press, press press, press! Press EVERYTHING! Press after each action at the Machine! The iron is your friend with sewing, and will help you get professional results every time. Another is the construction of your waistbands. Look at some sewing books, and watch some videos on how its done. When I was learning I devoured every sewing book I could get my hans on! They helped me with such techniques that I didn't fully understand. Lastly, grain lines. Grain lines on patterns are not just for making sure your patters are symmetrical with decorative printings of fabrics. They help you accurately cut your piece accurately so the garmet fits correctly and hang correctly, and doesn't warp, or strech out of shape. In some cases, especially with skirts, it is essential to cut things on the straight of grain. Beacuse they may got together, and appear to be ok, but in the long run, skirts might tend to change lengths as they hang over time, and not keep their attractive shape. Its all part of learning. I think your doing divinely, going into this head first and giving it your best try! Keep going and keep learning!

I make all of my own skirts & dresses too. I use old bed sheets and use them to make 50s full circle skirts/dresses. I also go to charity shops and don't just look for table cloths, curtains & sheets.... but I look for clothing that is bigger but I love the fabric and make it into something different. Plus I look for pieces with little things like lace trim, fun collars, buttons, appliques etc for details on my handmade pieces. I make matching hairpieces, headbands, brochures, pillow cases or clutches out of the scraps as well. I've been making my own clothing like this for the last 6 years, ever since I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and my pain definitely prevents me from wearing certain clothing because it's not made out of breathable fabrics or its too uncomfortable (I get a lot of pain now, so I add in elastic instead or a zipper), or I can't find my style of clothing or its too expensive now that I'm on the disability pension. My grandmother taught me how to knit & sew, I'm much better at sewing and I don't use a pattern anymore as I like to make it my own. I think it's fantastic that you are thinking of sustainability and reusing items instead of buying new clothing. The only time I ever purchase new clothes is, if I physically cannot make it (too difficult or my sewing machine can't work with the fabric, if it's a knitted item or if it's from my 3 favorite shops (Dangerfield, Alannah Hill Iraq City Chic.... GIRL!! You did a great job for your 1st time of making everyday clothing & not a costume!! (Just double check that you aren’t hurting your bongos when you pull your knee up against your chest!!! Things like trauma/bruises to the girls can actually become serious issues!!!) I think curtain fabric is the one reason to visit multiple thrift stores in 1 day...you can do SO SO much with them & the fabric is worth a FORTUNE compared to what you pay!! Oh, and you can move the buttons to make those bumps go away. Just lower tour feed dogs and zigzag your buttons on. I never hand sew buttons on my garments since they will go all wonky if I try.
