Well done, JP! The pattern ended up being pretty stellar! I love how the red of the handle contrasts nicely against the dark blade.

You keep getting better! Beautiful knife, fantastic pattern! If I were to criticize one thing (constructively of course) I would like to see a pin through the tang and handle. That’s a huge, heavy blade and it is held with epoxy on a tapered tang.
@JPsBladeworks
@JPsBladeworks 2 ай бұрын
Ill keep that in mind for future builds. I appreciate the constructive criticism.

Gloves for me with epoxy as well. I saw one maker (can’t remember who) doubled up on his gloves. When he gets the messy part done, he takes the outer pair off and has clean gloves to wear for the final blade cleanup.

Could I ask you why you wanted to cut in the tip with the grinder. Looking back, do you think it would have been a neater pattern to see it compressed into the tip rather than remain undistorted off the end of the blade? Beautiful work!
@JPsBladeworks
@JPsBladeworks Ай бұрын
I figured since the clip is so aggressive, i wouldn't like how the pattern would look taking that dive so i just cut it out and let it go straight and undisturbed.

It’s better not to cut your billets straight but under an angle when you’re restack them that way you’ll get more surface for the forge weld and you also can press it from the top as usual not from the front you had to with a straight cut

how does the coffee make it darker ?
@JPsBladeworks
@JPsBladeworks 2 ай бұрын
No idea. All i know is cofee is acidic and that acid makes it darker without damaging the steel. If i left it in ferric chloride as long as i leave it in coffee we would have a serious issue 😅

@@JPsBladeworks Indeed I did, but it do annoy med how, specially av American, smiths have a tendency to brand patternwelded steel like yours here as "Damascus steel", even though it's not. It's better to be honest and call it what it is, patternwelded and in your context here, also forge welded, instead of continuing to spread missinformation by calling it "Damascus steel".
