Making a Walnut Bowl

Two years ago, I cut up a black walnut log into slabs with my friend Gabe. We cut up part of the tree into smaller chunks that I made into bowl blanks. Those blanks are now dry. I have turned one of them into a finished piece. The bowl blank I chose to use for this project had a big hole in it and had cracked. I cut out the defects and made a striped pattern wood piece to replace the parts of the bowl that I removed. I then turned the glued up new and old pieces into a finished bowl and gave it to Gabe as a gift.

Frank edited out the bit where he looked shocked, puffed up, said, "Do you know who I am? I don't quite know how to put this, but ... I'm kind of a big deal. People know me. I'm very important."

I felt the heartbreak when you almost went through the bowl. It's funny how as a maker you feel compelled to mention how you had to add in the bottom piece. I've done similar things. You almost feel down because you know the gift could've come out better. It's cool to see it from an outside perspective and realize that your friend was still touched by your thoughtfulness. It became a footnote in the story of the piece and not a blemish on your record. Love your videos Frank!

That last part was great! It’s funny to think that to your subscribers you’re a famous woodwork/woodturner, but to many of your friends and acquaintances, you’re just Frank, and they might not even know you can turn wood. :) glad you salvaged the bowl. I’ve cut into the tenon on most of my bowls. Your save is a lot more elegant than most of my attempts.

I've watched a lot of franks videos and it took me a couple of years and watching a live interview to notice he has a stutter. it's usually only present in social situations, and he doesn't have it in his shop when he does monologues. but he has mentioned it in videos before, one was some things he made for a charity auction. his smooth and even tone is a great sound, frank would make a great voice over artist.

It seems like ESPECIALLY the greats do it. Some of the most talented prop and costume makers I've talked to are quick to point out where they messed up or where it's not perfect. Hello Mr Howarth,I have watched you make so many things and was wondering if you made things by special request.I am a Clemson Tigers fan and was wondering if you could make a small tiger paw out of purple heart and some type of orange wood.Something about the size of a keychain or something to hang from rear view mirror.I’m certain I could buy something similar but I love your work and “wood” love to have it special made and one of a kind.It doesn’t have to be purple and orange, their colors are purple, orange and white.Thank you

Hi Frank, Hello from the UK. I am SOO envious with the range of woods you guys over the pond can get hold of - I've never seen let alone heard of the majority of the timber you use.
