When I was bout 12, American Football came to the UK on Channel 4. I attempted to turn a 4 piece block of wood into an American football. I did well, but ran out of time to add the laces. I loved being at the lathe and being trusted with such a big machine. I didn't do well at school, but little things like this over the my years there were not noticed by my teacher. I'd love a lathe, and watch these videos from time to time. SO it great to see an expert do what a 12 year self tried so many years ago,

Nice work Frank. You always seem to come up with really cool ideas to get your projects completed. Maybe next time you can use that new 4th axis to do the lathe work on your CNC. Then you could leave the laces a little proud of the surface without having to glue them in after the fact. Heck, you could even use a V cutter and mill in all of the little dimples. That would be really cool. At some point, you could even rotate that 4th axis on a 5th axis which would allow you to mill all the way around a spherical surface while keeping the milled spot perpendicular to the cutter (or not, if needed). 😉
