Kat, I have to ask... Since the jumpers are so small, do you just give a water spritz like every couple of days for them to drink or are they getting all their fluids from their prey (as I don't think I've seen ya put water spots in any jumper enclosure)?
@Countryblock10 Жыл бұрын
They are actually super cute up close. I have always brought spiders outside rather than killing them. Fastening little creatures and worth our respect. 😊

Adorbs!! I love the lemon theme! You’ve given me so much inspiration for some new enclosure decor! I literally spent 4 hours on Saturday at Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, and Walmart shopping for my spiders! Glad I’m not the only one who geeks out on this stuff!

Hello jumper community. I knew nothing about JS's as pets until this past Christmas Eve when I found one crawling on my living room wall. Now when I find critters in my home it's catch and release. But being the middle of winter with an artic blast moving in all I could think of was to capture him in a mason jar. He looks very similar to the jumpers in this video. I named him Snyder D' Spyder (I was a minority of one who thought that was a clever name.) Anyway when I'd get off work I watched videos like this to educate myself. So after a week I spent over $40 on mealworms and a Ziila enclosure (sorry kat. Hadn't found your postings yet.) That's probably $55,000 in spider money. But Snyder seemed really happy to be out of that mason jar. Then after watching a video came my first shock. Snyder's a girl! My girlfriend asked me how I knew but she was standing too close to the pots and pans for me to say "It's because he has a BIG BUTT!" So I told her to google it. I renamed her Christmas. My second shock came when Christmas stopped eating. She had a voracious appetite up to that point and I thought I was doing something wrong. She built a cocoon and wouldn't come out. Yeah you guessed it-she successfully molted. This third shocker's the doozy. Christmas has built a cocoon much bigger and thicker than the one she molted in. I'm still learning how to care for HER and now I'm gonna be a grandpa? Me and my enclosure aren't set up for slings. If she lays I don't even think I could send the babies to someone who knows what they're doing because she built the nest in a corner and it's attached at 3 different points. Spring is too far away so release to the wild is not an option. A lot has happened in less than 2 months. HEEEELP!

what an adventure! there is a lot of good advice in these videos, & probably in forums too. Best of luck!

So did Christmas actually have slings? I thought they can't have slings if they haven't mated after molting. Maybe her eggs were infertile?
@a1orski Жыл бұрын
@@IllusionQueen4Eva No slings hatched much to my relief. I left the egg case intact for over 2 months before removing it,to make sure it really was infertile. Christmas was in that nest almost constantly, and though biologists claim spiders are incapable of emotion I sensed she was really bummed. I think she would have made a great mother. I took Christmas out of her enclosure 2 or 3 times a week for play time. She would jump from hand to hand, stretching her front legs like Superman to gauge the distance. Sometimes I would punk her and move my hand away at the last second. She was left there dangling from a bungee cord like a tiny yo-yo. It amazed me how quickly she could climb up that tiny thread of silk. One day in June I came home from work and checked on her. I couldn't find her. She was black and almost the same color as the soil at the bottom of her enclosure. It took me a few minutes before I found her body. She was still soft so she couldn't have been dead for long. I was saddened but not surprised. For weeks she stopped eating and when I came home from work she was still in the same position I left her. During rec time she didn't jump anymore. Christmas was a cute and gentle animal. And though not gift wrapped one of the nicest holiday gifts I ever received and I miss her. I made sure she was always fed (cracked me up when she would alligator roll a mealworm!),had water, and was free of predators. I'd like to think the last 6 months of her life were her best. Will I seek out a replacement? No. But if another jumper happens into my apartment I'll have a nice home set up for it. Thanks for your comment.

When you mentioned trying to find some jumpers outside I got so inexplicably excited haha! Last summer I found a mature jumper out in the wild sitting on my trash can in the sun and brought her to some shade. She was a gorgeous orange color, but sadly I couldn’t keep her because my housemates don’t like spiders 😔

That first one definitely looks like a hybrid of some kind. It's huge! The female P. audax in my area tend to be much smaller, and don't have much white on their faces. I caught both of mine in my house and both are/were extremely skittish and unable to be handled. I've spoken with other jumping spider keepers who say that audax tend to have a more nervous personality. Unfortunately, I have nothing to compare it to because it's the only jumping spider species I've kept.
@An-vp4su Жыл бұрын
I brought two Colorado native audax indoors for the winter and am keeping one, she’s a friendly one that handled very well! The other is getting released come spring cuz they are definitely skittish and did not handle well. So maybe 50/50 chance :P jk but now I have hope I can find more friendly ones outside.
@An-vp4su Жыл бұрын
Also look into P.otiosis, they’re a little more upkeep due to needing a higher temp and humidity than audax and regius but all the ones I’ve had handle super well and are super friendly.

I love these enclosures! Really nice job :D Finding some cute minis really help make it charming. I love finding little pieces of spider wood and cork bark for them when at reptile shows. As far as I know, only regius and otiosus can cross breed. But I have a hard time telling because regals have such color variety I'm not sure how to tell when they're mixed. I think they might get some iridescent sheen. Audax and regius can look so similar too.

@@shardinhand1243 yes but if we purposely cross breed different species of tarantulas and spiders in the hobby, we will muddy the different species into all hybrids. That means we can not put back captive bred specimens back to the wild, we can not guess the venom of a species, we won’t have a Brachypelma hamorii and a Brachypelma smithi but instead a hybrid and you can’t really tell the difference so it accidently messes up the entire captive population we have. 🫠 check this out why we do not cross breed in captivity and why we are very against it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYikf6N4lqmYgLc
