The wool looks fabulous and it drapes wonderfully, having just enough weight that shows it has body but doesn't appear to heavy or bulky.

Wow i love your way of draping patterns. It's not how one normally sees patterns draped but works way better for my brain :) I'm excited to try it on my next pattern and thank you for going so in-depth and showing us how everything is done. Beautiful precise work! :)

+Kaylah Faye Thank you so much! I'd like to someday, but tutorials are hard to do since they are so time consuming to edit, and explaining every detail makes videos really long. If a simple day project like a horsehair skirt takes 13 minutes, then a jacket that takes me a week would be an hour long video at least. Right now that is a little more time than i'd like to invest into a video - ecspecially since I don't think many people would want to watch something that length!

You might get some french curves to help making curves smoother or more regular. It doesn't really look like you need them, I just thought I'd mention them in case you haven't seen those. A flexible ruler is nice too, and might help with curved measurements.

Beautiful jacket. About the way you draft patterns, do you do this with all your designs and does the manikin need to be your exact measurements for this to work. I have an adjustable manikin however there are gaps between the panels would this be a problem. So far i have used the more technical way of drafting patterns using measurements however i find this hasn't worked well with more unique garments and i am not very good with math. I was thinking about trying out your technique in my next project but am not sure it will work well with my manikin. Love your videos as always, can't wait to see how this outfit turns out.

Heya I'm doing spring awakening for costume design for my final year of high school as a major project. Because it is based on the 1890's, I just wanted to ask what resources you get your inspiration from for your costumes? like books, images or anything like that. I used your post board for some inspiration, but I would love to know what other resources you use to inspire your designing. x
@AngelaClaytonCostumery
@AngelaClaytonCostumery 8 жыл бұрын
+Sailorsux For the 1890s the majority of my inspiration came from pinterest. I must have gone through hundreds of boards just to get an idea of the silhouettes and techniques, and I pinned anything I liked along the way. I referenced museum archives and blogs a bit too, but it was mostly pinterest haha. Usually I use books a lot more, but most tend to skip from the Victorian era right into Edwardian fashion, and the leave out the 1890s. "The Kyoto Costume Institute" and "Victorian Fashions and Costumes from Harper's Bazar" are both fantastic, but they only have a few pages devoted to that period.

How on earth do you keep your nails so nice? Mine are weak to begin with, plus now that I'm paying rent with a Starbucks job I can't paint them anyway, but I never had ever a professional manicure last longer than 3 days if I'm sewing and crafting at the same time.

I like it, but I wonder if it isn't more historically accurate to have button holes on the jacket and the actual buttons on the dress? My areas of expertise on historical clothing mainly centers around Regency but I feel fairly certain on this point.
@AngelaClaytonCostumery
@AngelaClaytonCostumery 8 жыл бұрын
+LaBouilloireNoire I've never seen that done on sporting attire from this period (except maybe on sporting costumes with vests). Part of the joy of sporting costumes was the versatility, and you'd lose that if you couldn't remove the jacket without having buttons visible on your shirt! And for this piece the buttons extend past the shirtwaist worn underneath it, so half the buttons would have to be sewn to the pants, which would look pretty silly.
@danion1588
@danion1588 8 жыл бұрын
I see, I imagined a vest underneath this so that the jacket would set well in place and not shift about when you were moving. But if you are going for a billowy blouse look underneath then you would obviously not want the buttons laying strongly on the blouse.

Téra Chocholatá if you listen around the 3:00 mark, she mentions positioning pattern pieces on the grain line, and also the herringbone pattern. Both those things mean “wasting” some fabric so that the final product drapes correctly, and so that the pattern runs in the correct orientation and matches at seams.

+Geraldine Heredia This is addressed in the description box because it always gets brought up. It isn't something I would recommend doing but i've only broken two needles doing it in the entire time i've been sewing compared to the dozens i've broken due to tension issues, working with heavy weight materials, and sewing with boning. So that isn't a major concern of mine, but it still isn't something i'd suggest other people do.
