Customer brought me this fan, stub shaft and stubbed nut. He wanted me to make a fan mount for his dump truck engine. So this was a challenging project. Some reverse rotation turning on the lathe and Bozo shows up and I over shoot the bore. Thankfully I could go to plan B and finish the project. Thanks for watching!

Loved seeing all the work to make this happen. Normally we just take 2 pieces of flat bar and bend them horseshoe shaped and bolt the fan to the hub and just leave the clutch in place. It gives constant positive fan drive and normally is no more than a 30 minute job. 😊 lots of ways to get it done. 😊

Got there in the end Tom . I would have done a completely different design based on previous experience . Warning the owner to fit the correct viscous hub for high temps . We have tried solid mounts direct to the crank on similar Cummins engines & found the plastic fan blades snap off , sometimes shagging up the radiator . Hopefully all goes well . Cheers 👍

The tool spring-back is a serious pain in the rear. I've had the same issue before on too many occasions. One pass you are removing 0.020" and the next spring pass you remove 0.003" and overshoot. Nice work.

Sometimes you can hold the end of a wooden hammer handle against the plate like that and it’ll quit ringing, also a rubber tiedown strap around the outside really helps

Loved the video. I haven't been on youtube in awhile and thought I would check in on some of my favorite channels which brought me here. I also stopped by Jim Deadmons channel over at Saw Log Plastics Hubs and I noticed he hasn't been on in a couple of years. I knew you and Jim were buddies at one point and made videos of going through the bins at the metal supply house. Any word on Jim and how he's doing or if maybe he's got a new channel? Again thanks for the video

Hey Mike good to hear from you. Jim got into dirt track racing and that consumed up all his time. That’s why his is not on KZbin anymore. How are things going at your shop? Staying busy?

The job eventually turned out OK despite that spring cut taking more than planned...but what machinist hasn't had that happen to them.
@hilltopmachineworks2131
@hilltopmachineworks2131 7 ай бұрын
Yeah that was a bummer. I think I found the culprit. I was cleaning up the lathe and noticed the tip of the carbide was chipped. I am guessing it did not cut properly and that is why my dimension was off.

Turned out well Tom. Good to have a free rein not so much pressure. Couldn't you have reversed the lathe drilled it with a RH drill then reversed it back for LH tapping? Cheers Tony
