I've always liked the taste of energy drinks and for years now, I have wanted there to be caffeine-free versions (specifically Red Bull). However, it doesn't seem like that is going to happen any time soon, so I decided to try and do it myself.
Related NileRed Videos:
• Old coffee extraction video: • Extracting caffeine fr...
• Pepto-Bismol extraction: • Making metal crystals ...
Warning: Please don't try this yourself. Any leftover solvent can be very dangerous to ingest.

Some ideas (from an organic/peptide synthesis PhD student): 1. Why not just repeat your extraction process multiple times on the same sample of red bull to see if you can continue to remove caffeine? In theory it should continue to remove a certain extent of the caffeine. 2. You could try a different organic solvent for the extraction instead of DCM. Ethyl acetate is a common choice, although it might be difficult to fully remove afterwards. You would need to rotavap it and maybe azeotrope with CHCl3, which is not ideal because chloroform is highly toxic. Diethyl ether may be another viable option for the extraction since it is relatively non-toxic and highly volatile, so it should be easily removed afterwards. 3. You could try to isolate the caffeine using flash chromatography (probably with a silica stationary phase). I don’t know if this would work though, because you would need to find (from lit. or experimentally) a TLC system that will give the caffeine an Rf ~0.3 with reasonable separation from the other compounds present (if they are not UV active, visualise them with a dye - see NotVoodoo for more info). If this prerequisite is met, then run the column, collect the fractions containing caffeine and set them aside. Collect any other fractions that are separated for future recombination. You would need to flush the column afterwards to retrieve everything remaining on the column (this is sometimes done with 10% MeOH in DCM, but methanol is toxic so it may not be viable). Recombine everything not containing caffeine, remove solvent etc., dilute with water, carbonate. Maybe this is feasible, but it is complicated by needing to be fit for subsequent consumption and preserving the original components in their original ratios.

It works for the same reason IV saline needs to be 0.9% NaCl. If the salt concentration is higher on one side of the "barrier" than the other, water will diffuse across the barrier from the lower concentration side to the higher concentration side in an attempt to balance the concentrations. In an IV, your cells would burst if there wasn't salt added (water would diffuse into the cells to try decrease intracellular solute concentration), and in this case, water diffuses from the DCM into the brine solution.

When you are reducing the water from red bull, you are actually increasing the acidic of the solution at the same time, that cause you to extract less caffeine. About the smell: I suspect you may have "distilled" it off while removing the DCM. The fact that it smells at normal pressure means that some of it is definitely volatile, under a vacuum I'd say that more of it goes into the gas phase which is then removed along with the DCM, especially if you pull a vacuum on it for that long.

I think you're mistaken. Most of the smell ended up in the DCM that he drained out of the separatory funnel, and that DCM was never under vacuum. He separately cleaned it up and dried it on a hot plate in the vial, remember? That's where much the odorous chemical ended up, so clearly it was the DCM that pulled it out of the Redbull. Was there maybe SOME left in the Redbull that got vacuumed off? That's pure speculation. The fact is, much of the odor was extracted before he even applied a vacuum.

Wouldn't the desiccator also remove volatile stuff? He said the flavor was the same after that step, but didn't mention the smell. Of course as No Fullname mentioned, some of it did make it into the DCM. I wonder how much came out of it in each step.

@Furio it's those things you see in movies where they put the vials in to it, and it spins them really fast, it's often used in blood donation to separate plasma from the blood. They're also used in nuclear weapon creation, by separating the much more volatile Uranium-235 from the Uranium-238. They can use the remaining U-238 which is much less radioactive due to the enrichment process(than even natural uranium) to create Depleted Uranium.

I was thinking, what if you tried a Pentane:CH2Cl2 1:1 solvent? I use that in my lab for extractions and it keeps the CH2Cl2 from keeping suspended emulsions in our work. It's also highly volatile so it should be similar, but you could probably get more of the caffeine out because you can be more aggressive with your extractions. I also recommend doing a TLC of your extractions (separate them into flasks) so you can visually see that the concentration being removed is decreasing and you can also compare your main bulk of red bull before and after extraction on TLC. It's not exactly quantitative, but if you spot 5 times with the tiny capillary tube and it's fainter in some spots, you know the concentration is different.

Fun fact: Red Bull made products that are/were not energy drinks but sodas called “Organics: By Red Bull”, the flavors are/were Simply Cola, Bitter lemon, ginger beer, tonic water, and purple berry. If Red Bull makes an Organics product that tasted like the original Red Bull, it could probably be a big success, since a lot of people drink Red Bull for the taste, but realize If they drink too much, they could have heart problems and/or die. So if a product like this was made, not only would people not have to worry about dying anymore, children could also drink it to without any worries to! Could also out perform the simply cola flavor and be the best selling of the bunch. We could probably make a petition for this.

Don't forget we are quite sensitive to smell, so insanely small amounts are enough to contaminate stuff, and odors REALLY contaminate everything very easily. On the other hand, some could have been lost to the process in general. You can see in the video he transfered the liquid from a container to another VERY frequently. Every time, part of it naturally evaporated or got discarded.
