In today's video, I take you on a trip to Jane Austen's House and we see the coverlet made by her, her mother and her sister. The coverlet was made using the English paper piecing method so I wanted to have a go at making something inspired by that visit. I talk about the Jane Austen coverlet in detail and share my process for fussy cutting.

I really enjoyed visiting Jane Austen's house a few years ago. It always fascinates me that women were quilting 200 years ago and using material from their old clothes. It makes me feel part of a sisterhood. I recently read Lucy Worsley's book about the different homes that Jane Austen lived in throughout her life. It was one of the most interesting reads that I've enjoyed in recent years.

This is very interesting. In Alice Walker's The Color Purple, quilting is used as a means to tie women together and bring this sense of sisterhood and womanism!

When visiting Britain ( I live in Wisconsin in USA) I walked along a canal to see the house where the Austens would stay at on their way to Bath, and also one of the apartments they lived in in Bath which is now a Jane Austen museum. What a lovely coverlet! Your quilt is lovely too, and I am sure that whatever you decide on will look wonderful. The BookTuber that I mentioned last video, Books and Thing (I'm not sure if you saw my reply or not, I know KZbin some times hides these things), worked in the Jane Austen museum (I think it was when she was at University). The thought of flying terrifies me so I know I will never see these things in person so thank you for letting us live vicariously through you. I have had the opportunity of visiting the home, and land surrounding the house, of Marjorie Rawlings. For 25 years she lived in Cross Creak, Florida. My husband and I visited together 15 or so years ago and had the most wonderful day. (For anyone unfamiliar, she is most famous for her book "The Yearling".)

Wonderful! I have the kit to make the coverlet but I’m pretty intimidated about the diamond shapes! Riley Blake fabrics is doing a series of quilts based on her novels. So far they have done Barton Cottage, it came out beautifully!

That was lovely. I love Jane Austen too. I live in Australia and when I was in England I went to Bath. I saw her holiday house there. It was so interesting. I remember it with happiness even to this day. I was wondering, did you take the papers out of the quilt? Well, of course you must have but I have only ever sewn two pieces together and not a shape onto a flat surface, so I was just wondering how you did that. I must admit I have only made a couple of EPP pieces and am still learning. Excuse my ignorance.

not ignorance at all! I actually didn't use paper, if I did I would have removed it before appliquéing. I use hexiform which is a fabric shape, designed to be left in so it works perfectly for this project. I have a video all about the difference between paper and hexiform if you'd like to see more about it

I’m a big fan of Jane Austen as is my daughter. When our children were kids, we’d often take them to Hampshire for weekends away from London. We’d visit Jane Austin’s house on our way home. It’s a wonderful place. And seeing her quilts hanging in her bedroom was a treat. I didn’t sew back then, but I appreciate the intricate work she did along with the other female members. I have some of those books that I treasure too 🌺

Your work is so carefully done, and every stitch is filled with joy and love. Just imagine, if you were to make a full-sized replica of the original quilt that was made in the past, you could loan it out to future production of additional movie versions to inspire even more future quilters. You could do a combination of hand applique and paper piecing and machine piecing all those sashing pieces and the little squares around the outer edge. If anyone could do this, it is you!

I live about 30 mins away from Jane Austen’s house and have visited many times. It’s one of my favourite places in the world. The pub across the road does amazing fish and chips too! I’m sure you know, but your ticket’s valid for 12 months after purchase so if you’re ever in the area again you can pop in without paying. I think that’s such a good offer considering the tickets aren’t that expensive. I love the shop there too.

Gosh Emma, you never fail to impress me with your creativity. What a super idea to interpret the Jane Austen quilt. I have the box set kit to make the 'real' Riley Blake Austen quilt but I need to improve my skills before trying to make it so your adaptation really inspires me to try something less daunting in the Austen style. Yes more diamonds lol I remember desperately searching for some Pemberley fabric. I think after watching one of your videos I couple of years ago, but sadly nothing to be found Riley Blaker releasing another one in the series.
