I'd really like to see one of those panels just mounted to the back above the rear wheel, in that spot where a tray normally goes on those bikes with a thing on the back. then put on a better hub motor and see how far it can go in the sun. maybe with some thoughtful placement you could even manage to mount a 2nd panel somewhere else but I can't think of a good spot.. front of the handlebars is just way too sketchy imo. when you showed the top-down drone shot the obvious spot seemed like on your back, like with a backpack or something. would need to build some angled assembly to face it straight up not at an angle though

I know it's 3 years later, so you might not see this, but you noted that the power output dips when you put your hand over it. This is an interesting quirk of solar panels that comes about when putting them in series. If you put them in parallel, or even better got a dedicated solar controller for each panel, this "choking" effect is much reduced. Though, on each panel, many cells are still in series so you'd still choke one panel out. For an application like this where the panels are unevenly lit, this may be incredibly useful. Although you would need fatter wire to handle more current.

Nice, quick, proof of concept. There are so many ways a person could make this far, far more efficient. For some examples. Use a good quality, in wheel hub motor. Use the thin, flexible, lighter Solar panels, and connect them to one trailer made out of a composite of EPS foam, fiberglass, a thin plywood top layer (to screw into etc), and Titebond III glue, and use two bike tires with low rolling resistance. Create a fairing for the bike itself, and/or a bubble windshield, and even better, do that on a recumbent bike that is already more aerodynamic than a regular bike. Even better still, build the bike from scratch, using a combo of bamboo+S-glass fiberglass+high PSI tensile epoxy (preferably 7k+) for the primary structure. If you get the weight down enough, and the improve the aerodynamics, you can use a smaller battery and less Solar panels. Basically creating a bike version of the Aptera car which may be coming out in the near future.

Honestly if you revisit this, Attached the motor to the Rear wheel direct(as in welding the motor to the bolt.) Also look into motor charging too, That way you can charge the wheel when braking or going down hill. While Trailer is fun, Maybe attach a few to over the rear wheel.

There’s three wheeled bikes known as recumbent tricycles which can become velomobiles when you put a shell over the frame (ie. Body work like on a car or a plane). I always imagine velomobiles being perfect for running with a solar powered system like this or a fuel cell. Perhaps a gas motor could be added but unless it was extremely efficient it would eliminate the point of it being a velomobile. Wouldn’t that be cool? (Wink wink tsk tsk)
@zeuss1944 жыл бұрын
Velomobile is probably one of the most efficient way to move.
@topsecret18374 жыл бұрын
zeuss194 The main curiosity I’ve wondered is if pedaling is really the only way it can be efficient. Because of the base frame’s insane aerodynamics, extreme light weight for a vehicle and some potential to put a motor behind a delta frame (2 rear wheels, 1 wheel) Velomobile, it may be possible to make many different kinds of propulsion systems work with it at high efficiency. At the end of the day it would only need to move the person riding it. In other words, it’s astonishing yet that nobody had thought of thinking of said recumbent trikes like go kart frames: put any kind of motor on it and it’ll zip around pretty quickly even with chain drive and gears.
@MasterOfJackShizz4 жыл бұрын
This was the first thing I thought of when I saw this. And maybe getting the motor into gearing.
@topsecret18374 жыл бұрын
Matthew Ferguson right. I originally thought of how tall could bicycle gearing possibly get with consideration of the rider cadence (90-120rpm providing the higher power, around 60rpm being good for torque). Forget the cyclist as a human and consider the cyclist to be more of the powerplant; then the main goal would be optimizing the speed the bicycle can get at those cadence ranges. When the chainring gets over 64 teeth, and god knows about how difficult 96 or 128 would be (these numbers are all multiples of 4), the issue is how much torque can the cyclist push into the crankset without issues developing. Hence, with a smaller chainring with a motor that can produce a much higher cadence and much more power, it’s theoretically possible, and perhaps even safer, to make a velomobile capable of highway speeds. And one day I hope, one capable of pedaling to and maintaining such speeds using non motorized methods. Now as a human then, the cyclist has to be protected from the structural stresses and impacts at all times. It’s possible to line the bodywork with foam or some sort of padding which can reduce the force the cyclist gets. Behind the head rest on the seat an airbag could be installed too. Some sort of ergonomic steering wheel would be needed to reduce the width of the vehicle in the case of underhand handlebars like some recumbent tricycle designs, and with steering not directly engaged with the fork, in the case of overhand steering handlebars like on a traditional bicycle. There’s a few velomobile designs made in the past decade with such a steering wheel, although it’s a mini wheel and I would prefer a steering wheel optimized like an F1s’, with a gear towards the front of the vehicle that actuated the front wheel with 180 degree range like the aforementioned design. As for the wheels... that is a matter of debate. They cannot be small because that would reduce the amount of inertia the wheels can sustain and inherently make it more likely to not survive a pothole. They cannot be too big because it would make it harder to accelerate and more difficult to fit inside the bodywork of the vehicle. It could be possible to make a four wheel version with an open wheel design but then it would need a more complicated steering system, which may/may not be able to have field replaceable parts. Hence the delta tricycle it would be based on. Wider tires would help apply more grip to the road and if all three wheels are the same type it would homogenize and simplify the vehicle even further. For that reason I’ve centered around the range of wheels from 26 to 29 inches. 26 or 27.5 inch tires might be the best chance at having all three wheels being the same, and as long as they’re over 2.8 inches in width it wouldn’t be terrible for all weather usage and use on most road surfaces, especially if they have knobs. After watching someone 3d print a differential ring with Nylon and getting it to work (Albert for an extremely short duration) on a 1500kg+ truck on KZbin, I would not be surprised if it would certainly be able to work in a vehicle several times lighter, hence the transmission could very well be entirely 3D printed. You heard that right; every part except for the belt or chain (either of which could also be 3D printed but with a highly flexible material), could be 3D printed. This means the parts could be fabricated using a suitcase 3D printer (seriously those exist) carried in the rear of the vehicle, reducing the cost of replacing a part from thousands of dollars to the amount of electricity and the mass of plastic used. That leaves the powerplant. A motor (one that may run on home grown fuels like E85B, 15% butanol and 85% ethanol) could provide primary power, providing the power to the motor itself. An auxiliary motor, perhaps a fuel cell, could power electronics and perhaps even providing secondary power to a front motor, in case the motor fails. And if the fuel cell motor fails, then the cyclist themselves can pedal the vehicle home themselves, so long as the vehicle is light enough. With all the additions to the velomobile, namely adding an incredibly small rear motor and a fuel cell, I would not expect it to exceed 75kg at all in weight. With just the ICE it would not weigh more than the velomobile itself (presumed to weigh 30kg) and the weight of the motor (15-20kg), about 50kg in total. Getting it to weigh as much or less than the rider powering it is paramount; not only would it remain relatively easy to pedal but it would improve its safety by preventing injury to pedestrians, cyclists and motorcycle riders. As for the person inside, as long as they avoid being unseen by vehicles exceeding several tons and cars, they should not expect to be killed instantaneously. Arguably the bodywork and frame might just hold up to that pressure.

Being a brushless motor when your going down a hill wont that recharge the battery anyways? Regen braking style
@klausbrinck21374 жыл бұрын
If the ESC isn´t made for handling and storaging the reversed current flow, it´s gonna simply overheat and burn. and most ESC don´t do regen braking, but simply do ESC-stuff instead (controling the motor)...
@HaloWolf1024 жыл бұрын
You'd have to have an additional motor in a rotation opposite of what it spins when electricity is flowed through it. And for it to actually be braking, it needs to be under load.
@jonipaananen93044 жыл бұрын
@@klausbrinck2137 Many drone ESC's nowadays support regen braking. It's not really for charging the battery, but for stopping the prop quickly, but it would pump voltage back into the battery, since that is the best place to dump the energy.

Have you considered not charging your active battery, but a spare one that charges while you use a different one. If the secondary battery can charge in the time it takes to deplete the active one, you then just need to find a way to hook it up to switch over, even perhaps manually> to the charged battery, and then just alternate which one is receiving charge. This should give you a 200% power collection boost, and it is much easier and faster to charge a battery not in use.

Cool design although I’d expect a car to eventually not anticipate a solar panel trailer and accidentally run them over. Maybe some vertical carbon fiber tubes with some reflectors or high visibility tape or something could mitigate that
