That is a beautiful garden Joel everything to encourage wildlife can be in a small garden. I love the grass it goes to show a lawn can be aesthetically pleasing in more ways than stripes and such a food source.

Absolutely Tracey - and wildflower turf is not needed if you have an established lawn, you can plant individual species and even plug plants, although you have to be careful they don't get swamped. You could try to grow your own wildflowers from seed and then plant them when they're a reasonable size - I've done this in gardens many times and they don't take long to establish :) I love seeing a mown path through a nectar lawn :) Best wishes, Joel

Thank you for posting this vid. Best thing I ever did for my garden was build a wildlife pond as per your specs Joel. Never seen so much wildlife here. Even my fruit and veg don’t have the damage caused by insects like they used to do.

Thank you kind Sir! :) It's amazing the amount of wildlife that is attracted into such an urban and relatively built-up area. Yes, several of those bug hotels now, all to a different design of course but all accommodating various types of insects, lots of frogs under that oak decking too, next to the pond :) I really hope these case-study/showcase ones encourage more people to garden in this way - wild does NOT mean messy ;) Really appreciate the support - see you Sunday I hope - Joel

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton it’s certainly encouraged me and gave me a lot of new ideas and projects for my garden this year. I’d love to build one of the bug/bee hotels and put it my garden with all the rest of the wildlife. @@UkAmphibians That's great - on both counts ;) No home-made bug hotel has to be to the standard shown in this video, although admittedly it's very nice looking and a nice focal point, but again if the right habitats for insects are included then it's just as beneficial :) Best bit... you can use offcuts and spare parts that would normally be thrown away or discarded - let me know how you get on :) Thanks again - Joel

Wild Your Garden with Joel Ashton I can't wait to see more Joel. 2 years now I'm slowly working on my garden here in Hertfordshire. I have a wild flower area by the end of my garden. Logs buried for stag beetles, hedging to one side, and hedgehog highway access on all sides and of my front and back garden, including log piles and hedgehog homes. Lots more to do and have got ideas from you for a wildlife pond, but a bit worried taking on a job like that because of me being arthritic. I will get it done slowly but surely. It's a case of a ready made pre moulded one or your way with the lining and felt. Best channel by a mile and surprised there's not more following the good you do .

Wild Your Garden with Joel Ashton I haven't seen the stag beetle one and will look out for it. Although I'm getting on with the garden, unfortunately there's a long way to go as it's quite a large garden and still not good enough on the eye. I give credit where credits due Joel and unfortunately not enough young people like you around otherwise I'm sure the environment and wildlife wouldn't be as bad. I'm based in a small village in Welwyn and Hatfield called Brookmans Park. So next time you're down it will be amazing to get in touch. God bless.

I am absolutely thrilled you're enjoying the channel and so pleased they're of help. I hope that again this shows that wild doesn't mean messy or unkempt and even a relatively formal garden such as this can bring 100% benefit to so many insects, birds and amphibians. If you're not aware already I'll be doing a live-stream again this Sunday - I'll upload the short video tomorrow with all the details and hopefully see you there - take good care Debbie, and thank you again :) Best wishes to you and yours, Joel

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton I just missed your last live-stream and shall try to tune in this Sunday; I'm a technophobe so I'll have to enlist the help of my tech-savvy teenage girls, haha. You are right, wild doesn't have to mean messy. I grew up in the heart of the West Sussex countryside (in the middle of a wood, no less) and we were surrounded by all sorts of wildlife - lots of different insects, birds, amphibians, reptiles and rodents plus some deer, foxes and badgers - it was amazing! My Dad's garden wasn't messy it was just... natural. I miss seeing and hearing it all (so calming) but I hope that this year I will finally be able to start my wildlife garden :o). All the best to you an I hope to see you Sunday.

For Sunday, all you need to do is go to the channel and you'll see the live-stream there at 3pm, it's just the same as watching a video and on the right hand side you'll see there's an option to chat - but do enlist help if you need to :) There's no obligation to join in at all. I don’t think I saw you using a pond liner? If you didn’t what did you use? I really want to not use plastic, I made one pond last year (with a liner) and it’s full of wildlife now and I want to eventually add a larger one but I really hate using plastic, any advice for what to do?
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alexandra, most of the urban garden-sized ponds I make are with butyl rubber liner, never plastic - it's recommended by greenpeace as it's made from recycled tyres, aside from that it comes with a lifetime guarantee and the subsoil and fleece on top of the liner ensures longevity. For very large ponds then bentonite clay can be used but it's unfortunately pretty rare to be able to make a water source without some kind of lining - fibre glass ponds eventually crack under UV and of course end up in landfill. If you're in the UK I can help source the butyl liner for you. Sorry I can't help more than that, but I hope this helps a bit - best wishes, Joel

@@SereneSoakingSounds I'll try to find time for that :) it's coming up to the most busy period, many ponds to install and more gardens to convert (or revert!) - it always involves a site visit, assessing the whole area, what may be there of benefit already, what can be incorporated into a new design, the likely weather, the sun that is cast across the garden, the planting of course - just thinking about the maximum benefit for both nature and the owners alike. Then it's some idea sketching and then finally the CAD drawings to ensure it's all executed in the available space and above all the design gives the clients what they want in the garden and of course aesthetically too, the plans are always fluid so that the clients can alter them to their needs if needed - it rarely happens but the space is for them and nothing is started until everyone is happy :) The garden you see pictured in the "Live Streams" background was featured on BBC Gardener's World - I'm yet to upload that, but it won't be long :)

I'm loving your videos Joel. Iam just starting out as a career change to gardening and with my environmental biology and forest school leader bsckground, id like to specialise on wildlife gardens if i can. Do you have a specialist supplier for native wildlife friendly plants that you can recommend.

Hi there Andrea, I don't think it was mentioned on this video but if you visit www.wildyourgarden.com we have everything you need for the wildlife garden - plants, seed, pond liners, wildflowers etc - my book is available on the website too if you scroll to the bottom of the home page. Hope this helps, best of luck with everything - Joel

I have been following your work and videos since I came across this one garden on butterfly bros, a fair while back. This is like my dream garden, and without prying to much was hoping you could say what kind of budget you'd need to get something like this? Keep up the good work and great videos!

Hi Tommy - thanks for this, your support means a lot. Unfortunately that channel has been dormant for over a year and wasn't utilised as much as it should have been. So I took the reins and decided to upload some of the older projects, more detailed and with better footage to accompany the new videos and work I've been uploading since May of last year, and the support has been fantastic - consider this channel an upgrade ;) Unfortunately, I'm not sure the client would want me to divulge the spend on this one but it's probably not as expensive as you think :) You can always send me an email to hazelwoodlandscapes@hotmail.com if you're in need of a consultation, advice or would like a plan/design or even installation - I really appreciate the support Tommy, take good care and stay safe where you are - best wishes, Joel

Hi there Donna - many butterflies and bees were attracted immediately and on speaking with the client after, there are many amphibians using the pond as well as the birds who are attracted to the insects and bathing, using the pond too :) Hope you're having a good weekend - best wishes, Joel

Thanks Katie - can't win 'em all with the music - it seemed apt for this, although there are 3 different tunes (!) in this video - there's no narration so sound isn't needed to see the transformation. If you like bug hotels then stay tuned for one we have just completed on a larger scale in North London recently - will be uploading the video soon. Best wishes, Joel
