In this video I make and fit lead window trays from code 4 sheet lead. I show the complete process from start to finish. There is also some close up parts of the lead welding.
I hope you enjoy.

That's the difference between a normal builder and a real tradesperson. You can see the excitement in your last two videos from being able to do some work again, even if you aren't fully recovered. Happy to see the progress in your physical health. Within reasonable time it's only going to get better!!

Thank you it was so nice to be able to work again and do what I love to do. I’ve really missed it and I’ve been questioning if I’ll be able to continue in the trade. I actually managed 4 days last week. My back still isn’t right. But it’s definitely improved and I’ve already got the next two KZbin uploads ready to go.

Stuart why don't you get an apprentice, or labourer and teach him ,or her how to do the bits when your back is playing up Also a pulling for getting panels up if you on your own Any way see you in the next one 👍

Hey Stuart. Great vid as always. Maybe some time you could talk about the code lead you are using for the video and maybe the reason for that? Also when the window is fitted do you cut the lead and fold it up the back side of the frame or sill? Say 25mm or mybe 18mm for a window board ? And then that up stand would be welded in the corners? And the then upstand would be consealed by the window board? Cheers
@slbleadworks
@slbleadworks 9 ай бұрын
Thank you and thanks for watching. Yes the best possible job is to turn the lead up 25mm against the back of the frame. And the window board conceals this. I usually do mine once the windows have been fitted to make it easier for them.

@@slbleadworks thanks stuart. And i take it you weld it to maintain the water resistance or is that not neccessary?
@slbleadworks
@slbleadworks 9 ай бұрын
@@Simon__Davies to be honest you can Just fold it up. This is so much quicker and easier. This really is belt and braces as no water should be anywhere near the back of the tray. Usually a mastic bead is placed once the window has been fitted too.

I’m not entirely sure to be honest. Id guess that it might stick but it won’t be fully bonded.

When did they start doing window trays like that. Is it now a requirement. I never saw one done like that before I left. And have never taken one out done years before. They were always just a flat flashing. Under the window and down the tiles. I used to shape all mine. You have bullnose tiles on that job. I would match the bullnose. Or whatever other profile. Flower pattern. Bow tie. Anything to jazz it up. I still have issues with lead being monochrome and bland. Plus I enjoyed coming up with new repeat designs. Made up little templates and everything. I would imagine there would still be some of my creations around Kent.

I’m not sure how long trays have been done like this. But I’ve been working with lead for 29 years and in that time window trays have always been made like this. Yes I do scallop and scroll etc but on this job the client just wanted clean straight lines.

@@slbleadworks I left 25 years ago. Just never seen one done like that. Apart from perhaps one of those awkward roof access type window/door jobs. With like a back gutter arrangement cut into the roof. Guaranteed to collect crap. And generally leak after a few years. I know in NZ window trays are compulsory. In Qld Australia our standards are so bad. You would be lucky if anyone looks. If in doubt use more silicone. There is a type now for every occasion. No guarantee given.
