@@Kirt44 Cocaine isn't an amphetamine, so why are you referring to it?
@lagrangiankid378 Жыл бұрын
@@calebsmith8029it's naive for you to assume that people asking Nigel to synthesize N-methyl-amphetamine actually want to make it themselves (especially considering that few Nile Red viewers have access to a full organic synthesis lab, let alone the needed precursors). Most of them are either joking or just think it would be an interesting synthesis to see, especially considering the history, culture and recent appearance in popular mass media of this extremely potent CNS psychostimulant. Despite the concern surrounding its controlled (schedule II in the US and schedule I in Canada) legal status, I think it could be a possibility for Nigel (or other chem-youtubers) to perform in front of a camera, for example, only the legal reactions, alternatively he could synthesize an uncontrolled analogue or make the whole thing, but without explicitly claiming he actually made it. It is quite impossible to tell the chemical composition of something just from an image of it. The other day I've seen nearly a hundred people getting brutally murdered, very realistically, in the movie John Wick 1, despite this, I don't believe any of the actors actually died to shoot (pun intended) these scenes. Similarly there is no way to tell if the reaction happening is a legal or illegal one just from the photage. You'd need at the very least a sample of the reaction product and modern techniques of analytical chemistry (GCMS/IR spectroscopy/NMR, etc...). And I don't think neither the canadian police, nor the DEA folks would have any interest in investigating and arresting him if he doesn't start selling/giving away the controlled substances synthesized. If he makes the synthesis, then immediately destroys the product and the precursors and throughly cleans his glassware, even if this would still be technically illegal, it would be a crime virtually impossible to prosecute. Not that I'm encouraging him to actually do that in any way, just saying that is quite possible.

@lagrangiankid37811 ай бұрын
Yes, but you have to heat it to the bp at atmospheric pressure which is 179°C. Also by doing simple distillation you might expose it to a lot more oxygen so an option might be filling your apparatus with inert gas (e.g. nitrogen or argon or even simple CO2 if those are not available). Or you could remove the benzoic acid afterwards by reacting it with some more sodium bicarbonate.

Hey Nile, i was curious about using the starting EO (such as the one in this video) for use in soap fragrance. I was unaware of the benzoic acid that forms as a contaminant from storage and whatnot. The soap i was looking to make would be a hard castile using NaOH as the base. Just to confirm, any benzoic acid, that may potentially be in whatever oil I may find, should be neutralized upon contact w the base? Also, how about the potential long-term storage of almond scented bars of soap? Would there be any potential risk of the miniscule amounts of benzaldehyde (per bar) becoming oxidized into any harmful benzoic acid in time? Should I be concerned w this @ all? Then again, I could imagine how the chemical nature of the soap might prevent oxidation on some level... yet I'm new to the soap-making world. Anyhow... My apologies for all the questions 😁 As w the rest of your videos, this one was solid. keep doing what you do brother 👍👍🏽👍🏼👍🏻
@GreenOrgyKing4 жыл бұрын
I think soap is like the bridge between two incompatible universes. Everything around us stays as it is because of how it does(polar) or does not(non polar) get along with water. Since soap is oil molecules with a polar head and a non-polar tail, it just destroys all distinction in the land of matter. Oh and an acid and a soap cannot coexist since soap is the result of alkaline conditions, so i wouldn't worry=D

@LiborTinka6 жыл бұрын
Some may volatilize and get over with the distillate. Note that mixture always boils as mixture, so the vapour contains both components (even though the ratio is like 99:1). Unless you perhaps use a fractionating column, the distillation won't effectively separate the two components. Especially by the end of distillation the temperature rises and impurities come over more easily - it should be then stopped earlier but this will result in losing some product. It's also a good practice overall to remove as much impurities as possible before proceeding - garbage in, garbage out they say.

You can make your own P.C.C...buy some Vitamin B- Niacin from the health food shop and pyrolyse it, via a distillation..and CrO3.if you can't source chromium oxide you can make it fairly easily from any chromate or dichromate with conc. sulfuric, and the only other reagent is hydrochloric acid. You could even get real clever and substitute the pyridine with quinoline, easily made by the Skraup synthesis, just Aniline with glycerol and conc. sulfuric...quinolinium chlorochromate is just as effective as P.C.C..the yield of the oxidation is high, over 80% because the aldehyde is not in an aqueous form and thus does not form a hydrate, which are much more susceptible to oxidation.

@NileRed I'm doing this in the lab at school but having trouble choosing the benzaldehyde layer could you help me out? How will I know?

Do you have a vacuum gauge on your system while pulling? I'm often afraid that there is risk of implosion if i just let the vacuum run
@nemeanlyan79188 жыл бұрын
NextGenAge So long as your setup can handle a vacuum, it won't implode. In fact, you have to keep the pump on to prevent air from getting back in, and there's no "negative vacuum", so you can't over-vacuum so long as your setup is vacuum rated.

But how do I know how much standard glass can take? Some vacuum pumps can achieve ultra high vacuum where as normal pumps only get a small vacuum
@0x73V145 жыл бұрын
It's either vacuum rated or its not, there would be no point of making parts that can take .8 atm but fail at 1.0

I don't think I have ever even heard of, and definitely have never seen with my eyes an implosion caused by a vacuum pump. Think about how much more pressure there is to play with on the POSITIVE side of the gauge? Plus, if something implodes, I guess it wont be flying into my face, but away from it, right?

Hey! those are great things, good for you, you might want to take on interns and hire a marketing team (if/when it's feasible, good job bro)
@NileRed8 жыл бұрын
I hope to eventually make things around here more official. Having an intern would be awesome. That is for the future though.

You would not be allowed to work in my laboratory with bare arms. Why are you not wearing a lab coat ?? Also a heavy walled conical flask with a tube connection side arm is a Buchner flask, not an Erlenmeyer. An Erlenmeyer has thin walls and no side arm.

You could try contributing to science in a way that not just re-doing reactions from papers accessible to anyone.

I wonder if cinnamon oil contains a bit of Benzaldehyde. Also Benzaldehyde is used in producing ketamine and Vallium
@MrMartinswan Жыл бұрын
Can't it be used in meth as well ?
@Ecksterphono11 ай бұрын
@MrMartinswan It would take quite a bit of catalyst reaction. Wouldn't recommend it. Because there have been experiments gone wrong and many have ended up making picric acid which can be toxic and deadly, it's very unstable.
@MrMartinswan11 ай бұрын
Yer you could get a like bit thar way !! But bitter almond oil would be better
@Ecksterphono11 ай бұрын
@MrMartinswan not for making an illicit drug like methamphetamine. Ketamine yes but meth would be a bit more difficult and more volatile
