Yes! Chem History! I love diving into old papers and finding nuggets of knowledge lost to time. H.C. Brown is a good one.

Just found your channel - subscribed! Using thionyl chloride to make benzoyl chloride seems somewhat odd, at least for the amateur (which I include myself in that group). Thionyl chloride is somewhat difficult to get, as are the reagents used to make it. But you can make benzoyl chloride from benzyl alcohol and chlorine (at least according to US Patent US1851832A) - pass chlorine through a benzyl alcohol at ~140 °C for approx. 6 hours, then raise the temperature to 200 °C and reflux for another 6 hours. Then fractional distillation.

Benzoyl chloride can be really useful! Great video man!

Useful for what?
@midwestchem3686 ай бұрын
@muzaffaryusupov6435 for example benzoyl chloride can react with anhydrous propionic acid to make propionyl chloride. Which is distilled directly from the mixture. It's much safer than phosphorus pentachloride or thionyl chloride. This can only be done when the end product has a lower boiling point than benzoyl chloride and can be distilled from the mixture.

@@midwestchem368 Good ol' H. C. Brown, like I mentioned earlier.

Please do chemistry history videos. I love old chemistry videos. Please also read some old chemistry papers or notes, I just love the way the language used to be. I’ve wanted to start a channel where all I do is read old chemistry papers to the viewers

Agreed about the style of writing at the time. I’m particularly fond of textbooks from anywhere between 1850 and 1950 (especially the turn of the century) when they were written by one person and edited by one person or a few people. They were much more intimate because the writing style was consistent and flowed much better. Scientific literature now is a lot more sterile

I'll titrate my old bottle of 30% H2O2 soon and then get started on it, thank you for the suggestion

How did you get the thionyl chloride? My conclusion is that my only way to get some is passing dry chlorine and SO2 into SCl2... but its sooo dangerous ive never been bothered to attempt

@@williamackerson_chemist from some dude on sciencemadmess, I was lucky enough to be the first person to respond to the post of him selling it lol. That is a terrible combination of chems to work with, I don’t know if I’d ever want to try it. Thy labs made it from PCl5 and SO2, but if you have access to or are willing to make PCl5, why even bother if you need it to do an acid chloride synthesis unless the bp of the product is too close to the POCl3 produced. There’s a seller on eBay (reagent007) based out of Ukraine with good reviews that has SOCl2 for sale if that’s an option for you
