Cutting loooong strips has puzzled me since I began quilting 6 months ago. Thank you for a thorough demo of several strategies. Mitering shorter strips! Brilliant.

I was always taught not to use the cutting mat markings for accuracy. I have now found it doesn't matter and use it for big cuts. Tip: To check for accuracy, use a ruler to measure between markings and that determines whether you are to the center or need to be over the line.

My cutting accuracy improved a lot when I started putting a weight at the end of my ruler which is on the fabric especially on long cuts. I use an antique flat iron (5lbs) but you could use a bag of rice or heavy can or a 3 lb. Weight. This helps my arthritic hands make better cuts.

Rulers are expensive and I have the 6 x 24 with the rotary cutter on it. We have open rooms and my table is on the other side of the stove not a good idea, but I can't move it. I took dawn dish soap and sprayed it with dawn to clean it and it wiped off the ruler marks. I was so upset. I paid $40 for it. I did send an email to the company and it will take time for them to answer. We shall see what happens. I never thought those marks would come off. I do use weight with a dumbell on the ruler to keep it still, I have numb hands and also I use a steel glove.

This was just what I was dealing with. Bought a 30" ruler and now I can cut the strips in one layer on your Perfect Purple Patchwork Quilt to be done soon.

Measure twice cut once. If I’ve learned anything it is to slow down. Double check measurements needed. I do not use mat because I have two cutting tables and mats are different. Especially the width of the increment lines.

Hi Rob. I'm not a newbie but I have one issue with half square triangles. I make them just fine. Very accurate. I sew two together just fine. But when I stitch the two to another row, the seams don't match up. Nothing I do fixes it and I end up with my points off. Any ideas?

How often do I need to get a new ruler? It seems like I get a wave cut, not major but visible. I’ve been getting a new ruler every few months.

I do not think it is the ruler, they sometimes loose their marking, or chip a corner, but you are not shaving the ruler with your cutter. Attest I hope not, haha. My guess is you need a firm surface under your mat, and make sure that the ruler is not slipping and that you do not have too many 6 or more layers under the ruler.

I know, right! I was going to make a huge cut along the selvage, but I just could not do it, so I obviously changed directions in the middle of shooting the video haha.
