✨UPDATE: since using the candlesticks, I would suggest making the hole go all the way through to the wheelhead - making a big cylinder rather than keeping it enclosed. If you let the candle melt down too far, it's really difficult to get it out when enclosed - but the cylinder types allow the candle to be pushed through if needed. ✨
I'm making some candlesticks for the tables at my wedding! Join me as I throw and trim these candlesticks on the pottery wheel. I can't wait to see them finished! ✨

I recently saw a Michael Kline working on plates. He doesn’t wire them off the batt but gives them a twist instead of just pulling straight up. I tried it and I had great success without warping. Great job on the candlesticks!

Congratulations Mae so pleased for you and a great idea to have your lovely work sharing the happy day with your family and friends. Also it’s given me my next project for birthday/Christmas presents for my friends and family so thank you very much for the inspiration! I love watching you work as I’m left handed too and rare to see a lefty on You Tube. A quick question about your plates that I watched you put on their sides to bisque fire to avoid cracking. Did they all survive the glost firing? Do you think firing on their rims dried them out more evenly? Just wondering the science behind this technique and if it also helped with gloss firing cracks? Thanks again and look forward to seeing your choice of glaze!

Yep they all survived and are glazed and looking good. I think the science is that the weight and shrinkage is evenly distributed, although I don’t really understand why. It still doesn’t make sense to me and I still hesitate when loading the kiln for a plate bisque, but it’s never failed me

Thank you so much for your videos. So inspiring. I was wondering if there are some german potters watching your videos who have a clue about where to buy/find a bat system with a bat rug. I went through all shops I know of and can only find the systems with drills. To the Community: can somebody help? ✨ anyways, thanks for sharing your knowledge!!

I’m so glad you can get back on the wheel!! These are going be so lovely at your wedding. Did you cover the candlesticks with plastic when you left for the night? Or just left them to dry uncovered?
@MaeCeramics
@MaeCeramics Жыл бұрын
I left them uncovered, it’s quite cold in my studio at the moment so I wanted them to dry enough. I’m still waiting on my stamp though so they’re currently still wrapped up!

Wow! These are so cool :) Do you wire them off when they are leather dry to prevent warping? My stuff warps all the time and it's slowly killing me.
@MaeCeramics
@MaeCeramics Жыл бұрын
I wire them off when they’re still wet on the wheel and let them dry to leather hard, and then they just pop off the bats. Warping is such a pain, but maybe try cutting when the piece has just been thrown so it doesn’t get stuck whilst drying.

Thank You !!!!! What kind of fabric do you put under the bat? Is that enough to attach/stick the bat to the wheel? And another question... Very often when i watch your videos, (here at 2.36) i'm wandering : what are the avantages of being a woman artist ?! ;-D. Thank you . (And sorry for my english.)

It’s a bat rug, it comes with the bat. I don’t know what it’s made of I’m sorry! Google Guerrilla Girls - Advantages of Being a Woman Artist to see the whole poster. Your English is great, don’t worry!!

I think you are an amazing potter, extremely creative, but to work on the wheel to such an advanced level, it takes a lot of experience.. .
