My grandfather was a fisherman but he died when I was very young so I never had chance to spend much time with him and learn from him. Because of what I learned from you and your videos makes me feel closer to him and to my roots. Thank you, brother, for selflessly sharing your knowledge. This means a lot to me.

Pretty similar situation here. My grandad was a shrimper in Florida. He didn’t make nets but he had to repair the. The technique is pretty much the same. He tried to teach me some but I was little and it was hard for me to catch on to what he was doing. The barber in that little town (Apalachicola, FL) made cast nets in the barber shop when he wasn’t cutting hair. They hung from the ceiling next to the barber chair. Most of the cast nets I saw there had a large mesh. These were used to catch mullet. They were called gill nets because of the way they worked. The mesh was just large enough for the mullet to get their heads through and they’d get hung up around their gills. To get the out of the net you needed to grab them by the head and pull the on through. It wasn’t for many years later did I see different cast nets with smaller mesh that worked a little differently. I inherited all of my grandads netting needles. I even have a spool of twine that’s still wrapped in plastic. It’s probably 40 years old. I figured it was time I learned how to do this. Once I get proficient at it, I may take the wrapper off that spool and make something. Even back then there were only a handful of old timers that knew how to do this and they were well respected for knowing how. There is an easier way to tie the sheet bend with your needle. But the sheet bend is one of those knots that even if it’s tied correctly it doesn’t hold unless it’s “dressed” correctly. From what I can tell, the Flying Dutchman technique ensures that every sheet bend you tie is dressed correctly. It’s hard to learn but I feel it’s worth the effort. Thanks for making these videos. This is a lost art and there’s not much information out there on it.

I was given a 18 loop start from a net maker from Port Arthur Texas and he alsotouhjt me how to tie the Flying Dutchman Knot, Using the 18 loop start and the knolage he taught me , I tied a 4 foot hanging cast net. great sense of accomplishment and great therapy, is calming while tiring a cast net ! @@davidmcduffie1398 18 hangings seems really short for a nice flat start. 36 hangings optimizes performance and prevents excess twine across the entire net as it lays flat. I am glad you still remember what you have to do to make them. One of the men that were my mentors for making nets lives in Rock Port, if he is still alive. Thanks for watching and letting me know how things are going for you in your net making.

My grandfather was a fisherman all his life and he made us kids a net for Christmas. It was like a Seine net with weights on the foot rope and cork floats on the top rope, a pole at each end to hold the net open--and a cod-end like a trawl net. We had such fun with it!

I have knitted cast nets since I was 12. I am 63 now. I use the flying Dutchman too. I do a few things a little different but the end result is the same. I don't hand knit many nets anymore. I make mainly panel nets. I did make one out of braid a while back. I have found that how you hang your net such as lead line length is just as important to get it to open and lay flat. A lead line that is too long will cause the top to pucker. I'm always interested in how other people build their nets and if there are ways to improve. Good overall tutorial that will make a good cast net.

Thanks for your knowledge! I learned a lot! coming back here after watching all the way to the finished net! I was looking at what I would need and it looks like getting the weights I need is not possible and my cheapest option besides making/casting them myself would be to just buy a cast net and scrap it for its weights. But again, thanks for all the amazing videos!

As a last resort, you may consider buying egg weights and drilling them out larger for use. I don’t really know what your cheapest option would be. I had a mold made because I use them very frequently because I know how hard it is to get them commercially.

Love the video. Bought twine and made my own needles. Well I had them around to repair my 20+ year old net. Anyway I want to build a net along with my 5 year old grandson. Something he’ll have fun doing and remember me later for. Square nets I made as a kid. Cast nets is another whole beast. Your lessons here are excellent and I watch and pause them often. A thought. Your hands get in the way a lot of seeing what you’re picking up. Or another one I can’t get just right was the first loop combined. Didn’t see how you started your dowel. Maybe two different cameras and edit in pip.

Great tutorial. To mark the wideners i use colored small paper clips that the wife found at the craft store. I have been working on an 8’ 1” mesh net for several years now on and off. And i tell you what, when i’m done with it, there is no way im trowing it on the water. Maybe on the beach with sand bottom. But no way im getting this thing wrapped on an oyster bed or a dolphin. I have a lot of hours into this net. One thing for beginners, find the math equation for the first row and get familiar with it. For example for my 8’ 1” mesh 36 on the starter row resulted on a cone at the top of the net, so i had to do it over. Usable, but not what i wanted. For me 56 on the starter row worked better. But also if you do too many starter rows, you are going to do a bunch of extra work and will result on a slower sinking net.
@equipyourselflifeskills5802
@equipyourselflifeskills5802 4 жыл бұрын
That cone will not be there once you put the lead line on it and stretch it out, it will also be gone once you cast the net. The Flying Dutchman technique causes the twine to act like a spring, closing the webbing and giving you the false sense of it being Incorrect. 56 headers is way to many adding to your work, time and twine usage. This will also make more webbing then is needed adding to your sink rate when your using your net. I hope you finish one with 36 to give you a full visual once completed. I would never led a fellow net maker the wrong way. I have been making them for almost 50 years and I also asked the same question of my teacher and I am providing you with the same answer. 36 is the magic number. Thanks for watching and learning.

I know you may not see this, but i wanted to ask, have you or anyone you know tried to make a net from braided fishing line? I'm interested in this because you could use much smaller line for the same strength and potentially have a quicker sinking action to the net and be less affected by wind in your throwing. In addition, you wouldn't lose flexibility like you would using monofilament. Also, I'm curious how much total line or twine you use for a given size net. For example, how much twine does a typical 6ft net use to complete? Thanks for your very helpful video!
@equipyourselflifeskills5802
@equipyourselflifeskills5802 6 ай бұрын
It takes about one pound of twine to complete a 6 foot net with a 3/4” mesh…… that is very small mesh. You can use braid if you like. The twine I recommend is designed for this type of net, braided fishing line is designed or “fishing” (rod and real use). Other braided nylon has a deferent net application, such in the case of a cast net, the brail lines (drawstrings). All I can say is do as you like, I have nets that I made and that are clearly 50 years old that I have taken care of (repaired and dipped every few years) and I still use them. Let me know how your nets come out with braid.

Thanks for your speedy responses i was following Sustenance N Covering Net Making Parts 1 to 9 & 16 until he stopped at video 9 "lol" and i have made one complete 8' diameter mullet net using a 1" mesh stick and i am almost through with a another 8' pilchard net using a 5/16 mesh stick. i like your Making cast net videos because i have not been able to use the flying Dutchman technique, because no other video "explains it like you do" its methodical and clear so i picked it up almost immediately tried a few on my current net and the knots tied correct without much effort, also i have never used dowels. I could not understand the concept of making the starting headers grow. i start with even 42 headers and wideners after the third row exactly like your video. A few noted techniques i like in your videos 1) how to tie on line, i add line using the square not them burn the ends i realize after i dip the net the meshes can hang up because the burnt end is hard. 2) the way you hang your net to the lead line and 3) using the round lead as opposed to long lead. i will attempt to post videos of both my nets. final note, the Flying Dutchman as explained by you is an awesome technique. I live in the Lesser Antilles Caribbean islands so net making is a dying art most resort to nets bought off store shelves, hand made nets are fantastic to throw and are strong.

One thing I have learned using this method is how to untie a mesh knot... Not sure what I am doing wrong, seems to me like I am doing the same thing repeatedly. Up to 3 knots come out perfect then the next 5 comes out in a jumble. I have about 70 knots tied, but it took me probably 300 knots to get here. It seems like if you loose pressure from the pinky at any point the knot is ruined. Is there a common error that beginners make? I have tied nets a few times, but I learned more of an overhand technique. This method makes a much nicer reliable knot and I don’t fee like I have to draw blood pulling the twine. Any further suggestion or video would be appreciated. Love the look and feel, just not sure I can tie enough knots to get a mesh in my lifetime at this rate.

Your right about the pinky. Your learning the correct way. It may take you some time and very deliberate effort to master this. I assure you, once you get this down, you will never forget how well it works. Your nets will look just like mine. From beginner to master, all our nets look the same using this technique. Once you get the correct tension with that pinky, you will own the cast Net world. Thanks for the comments and watching.

I think you should ask a fisherman how to weave nets. They would be on the fourth row by the time it took you to start.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience you are an absolute Gem. The only problem I seem to be having is the knots tend to come loose and the sizes of the loops change which is throwing me off. I'm not sure why 😖🇦🇺

The twine needs to have a good bonding. When you buy your twine, there is no way for you to know how well the maker applied the binding to stiffen the twine. It’s very frustrating when you have a spool of twine that the bonding is not applied very well. When I get poorly bonded twine I will normally keep the net hanging where I work on them so gravity helps to keep the knots in place. Once you finish the net and dip it, this problem goes away because the dip bonds the knots in place. I hope this info helps.

Very,very great video. I have one ? you sewed a adder mesh after every 2 rows, is an adder mesh sewn in every 2 rows down the whole net until you reach the desired length? thank you.
@equipyourselflifeskills5802
@equipyourselflifeskills5802 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, once you add your first row every three mesh it will add up to 12 spacers (wideners) for the full row, so every third row will need to have spacers from start of the net until you finish at the bottom.

Great video and explanations. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Can you please tell me, about how much tread is needed for one net. I know it depens on size of the net, size of loops and thickness of thread. Im trying to make one for myself, and I dont want to end up with too many thread or too little. My net should be 1m in DIAMETER, size of loops 1cm (diagonal of squares) and thickness of the thread is 0.5mm. This is for small bait fish, and within regulations for my country. I know its hard to calculate, but maybe you can give me lenght for you sample net and I would try to recalculate. Thank you in advance. :)

I would guess because the twine is sold in a one pound spool, you will only need one spool. I use #4 bonded nylon seine twine that I buy from Memphis Net and Twine company.

Hi Equipyourself lifeskills question how do you hang your net while doing the body of your net? also what tension do you use to do the Flying Dutchman knots? do use a almost vertical hand or almost horizontal? why I am asking I find I always have to be searching for a comfortable position to tie knots that produces the right tension.
@equipyourselflifeskills5802
@equipyourselflifeskills5802 4 жыл бұрын
christopher smartt , i keep the top of the net secured with its original starting loop until it’s about three feet. I then take a needle with heavy twine and start a new loop about two feet down and run the needle through every hanging until I reach all the way around the net. This loop now becomes my anchor point for securing the net. Once I get about five feet, I do the same process at the four foot mark and then compleat the remainder of a six foot net. Another words, I insert a new top line every two feet to help support the weight of the net. I only use enough firm tension to securely lock the knot in place. I normally sit on the front or leading edge of an armless chair so my arms can move as needed. Once I secure the lead line on the edge of a table (using clamps 🗜) I allow the net to hang off the line to the floor in front of me. Maybe browse my other videos on Making Cast Nets and you may be able to see how I hold my hands for each type of knot tying. It is really tough to put all the details in understandable words. I hope this adequately answers your questions. Good luck.

Is there anything wrong with securing the slipknots with a micro dab of super glue? I was most of the way through my first row of flying dutchmans and had a couple of slipknots slip (imagine that) which screwed up the whole process for me.
