Gotta be honest, when I first started watching, I wasn't that interested in the game, more in the architecture/game dev/pixel art combo which I share. However, this latest vid has totally sold me. The care and complexity put into all of these systems and rapid and marked improvement in the graphics are crazy. It's really impressive and inspiring, not only how far you've come, but how much more I'm sure you can do before release.

haha glad I changed your mind :) In architecture, they tell us we won't make our best work until we are 50 or 60. I think it's a pretty good way of thinking about things and lets you keep improving and not stagnate. Hoping to improve the game a lot more by the end - without taking way too much time of course!

I am stoked for this to come out. I used to play Harvest Moon on game boy advance religiously as a kid, but you can only marry every character and see all of the events so many times before it loses its magic. While I recognize this game is very different, it brings forth those same feelings of excitement when looking forward to playing it. A game hasnt done that for me in a long time! I hoestly cannot wait to play this game. It's absolutely stunning and seems incredibly interesting, the characters especially. I've had the game wishlisted on steam for ages, but because it doesn't say there, I wanted to ask; will there be romancable characters? Another question is in regards to time - will it be possible to slow down time? I ask, because I am the sort of person to love just taking it chill and spend 10 minutes appreciating a particularly pretty corner of the map, haha. I often end up getting stressed by the, to me, too short days. I know games like Sun haven has the option to slow down the day considerably and thought I would suggest it, just in case you hadn't thought of it. Just an idea, mind!

btw, just a lil advice on pixel art since i am also into pixel art and been drawing since i was a child, i think your characters and designs are great but only thing that looks kinda off is the colors, i remember u saying the scenes were looking more alive since you added like objects related to that place etc. but there is another thing you can do to make it look more alive in color theory you shouldn't make the darker color with black and since pixel art is limited for colors, you need to pick the right colors so they'll pop out! 🌸 and i see that you make the darker colors using black and lighter colors using white :-) u should change the hue a bit while making it darker/lighter to make it look more alive!! :-) for example for a darker blue choose the color a little bit closer to black and also purple. Or for a darker yellow choose the color a little bit closer to black and orange. For a lighter green choose the color a little bit closer to yellow. Just kinda change the hue and see what suits well. 🌸✨ You can check the values by making your pc black and white :-) values are important too. just keep in mind to when making lighter and darker colors, change the hue a lil too 💖 just a lil advice from a fan

I love when you release dev logs! Can't wait for the release! I have a question, though: if you ever plan to have romance characters, do you have any ideas for schedule and interaction changes for dating and marriage? Some games like stardew valley make the marriage really plain, only having a gift being given, a chore done sometimes, and sometimes even changing the scheduling to where they only hang around the farm, which is kinda depressing when you think about it because their "life" was changed so drastically. A slight change with their schedule would be understandable, but nothing to drastic. Like maybe stopping by work depending on if you open during a potential "meal" period? Also, I remember in Story of Seasons Trio of towns, you could join a romance character for a meal at their place or a restaurant they eat at to increase bonds after befriending them enough. Maybe even have a boost on the restaurant in some way relatred to their personality once married? Such as maybe morale boost when they visit during working hours or more publicity? It would be nice if something like that could be implemented into the game, since most rpg's have stopped adding to the romance aspect like the sharing a meal and even romance rivalry, which kind of makes players interested in that slice of the game go "why even add it if you're just going to make it plain and easy?" Sorry to ramble, I'm just excited and kinda miss having some more challenging romancing on the side of main quests and stuff! Can't wait to see what else you have in store!
@PixelArchitect2 жыл бұрын
Very interesting to hear about the features of the Story of Seasons game! I can look into it, and I think these additions will definitely improve the romance system. Schedule changes are definitely possible - can can just add new schedules for characters that have been romanced, or have event overrides that take higher priority that their regular daily activities.

This looks amazing!! I can't wait to play it, all that you do to make the game more immersive its super cool! There is one thing I though to mention, its not very big, Its just that the npcs have amazing character art, but it seems a bit different from the in game sprite (like the colours of the hair and clothes of the characters that live together), I think it would be a good idea to match them to the illustration so its easier to recognise them in game... I dunno... anyway, I love this game and the work you are doing!!!

I agree with this! I think i noticed it the most when speaking to Bianca- her character art is gorgeous, and some of the prominent elements of her design seem to be her blue hair, the big black goggles she wears on her head, and her dark clothes! however seeing her in game sprite compared to her character art, it felt kinda hard to immediately connect the two, as it seemed like her blue hair was the main/only consistent design element? hopefully u dont mind me saying this, i dont mean to leave criticism on a game and video series ive been watching for what feels like a year now! the game looks absolutely wonderful, and every new environment or character we see just makes me more excited for its eventual release!! love the game and everything you're doing, hope the dev process is going well, and best of luck with whatever you've decided to tackle next :D

@@lindsayharris5074 No worries and really glad you are following along! For the in-game sprites - I actually used placeholders for now since our character animator is finishing another batch of clothes, so the in-game characters don't match the portraits. That looks amazing! It's a great inspiration to see graphics so beautiful for a starting pixel 'drawer' like myself. One idea: What If, instead of NPC choosing always the best possible (shortest) route to reach the destination, apply randomness to the chosen route. For example, calculate the best route and next 10 possible routes, each slightly less optimal and let random function chose one. That way the feel would be more organic as the NPCs wouldn't always chose the same route over and over. :)

Thank you so much for the insight. I prototyped NPC schedules differently, without using navmeshes but my system has a few kinks and limitations. I manually place nodes for a path with a start and end time, then calculate where they are supposed to be at any given time from the path length and time of day, so that when the player enters a scene, the npc spawns along its route in the right position. (just felt like sharing, hehe)

Thanks for the insight! I think your system may actually be closer to Stardew's system, since characters always follow the same path and spawn at the correct position when you enter a scene. We will probably use something like that for certain cutscenes and events

One thing that I would certainly look for is looking at taking inspiration from other titles especially when it comes to making events for characters in the future like Stardew Valley. Another thing which can really add immersion is adding more to the daily activities, you've already done it with doors, where you could Create nodes where a certain NPC interacts with it they commit to a certain animation like 1 of 3 types of cooking animation (making cereal, making a salad or a hot dinner). Going a bathroom to get changed, if you're present at their house. Other interactions like playing on their computer, console, watching TV. These little things add to the characters. Perhaps designating characters with traits allowing them to interact with certain objects. At the very least it will also liven up the world, instead of characters just standing around waiting for the next movement action.

Hi! Vector2.Distance - not a cheap operation (it have square root in it). You better to cache that (like on 4:02 you compare dozen times couple of unique values in condition - this better to cache early). Also it can make your code looks better. Also, if you just compare two distances - use not a Distance method (magnitude) but sqrMagnitude - this is length of vector before square rooted - it is much cheaper, but does the job. I think this condition at 616 to 628 can be simplier, but I can't see it right now, need refactoring. I think you can split start node check and end node check - this will split your condition to two smaller and manageable conditions, then replace Distance with cached values and you will see better way to simplify this. Code at 5:18. If you see big switch statement(in hard mode ANY switch) you have a problem. There are you store DATA in CODE. Better make ScriptableObject with dictionary like and do comparing data in loop. This will lead to much cleaner code and easy a data managment a little. I think, you are stored similiar data (like name, link to map etc), but don't draw the line between them yet. Or you need that data somewhere else. I think this data can be extracted from map and converted to much more simplier format to work with. Great project by the way. I respect your thrive to make this game

Thanks a lot for the tip! It really helps since we are closing in on going under 60fps in certain areas. I'm not very familiar with some of the things you are suggesting but I will definitely look into it and try it out. Always looking for ways to optimize and improve performance

My partner and I really like your videos. We're working on a game together and found your videos for inspiration. I was hoping to find a video about your entire process for designing the maps and bringing them into unity. Most of what I find is about tilemaps but I don't think this provides the type of detail that we both find fun and interesting to make. Your process brings up multiple challenges, such as the pathfinding issue, but I was hoping for some more detail on your entire process to help me find some solutions for our project. Thanks for all the videos, love your art style and looking forward to playing Chef RPG.

Pathfinding is definitely very challenging. I'm using grid-based with A*, but some other games use nav meshes, or a more free-flowing pathfind system. Best of luck with your project!

hey ive already watched this right when it came out but i came back to say just how much ive enjoyed seeing your process. as an artist, i started watching about a year ago drawn in by the art and was really surprised that you didn't gatekeep your designing process? that sounds weird but i like that you were giving away your knowledge from architecture and i think it was a great supplement into improving my own art and visual storytelling. and now with this coding focused devlog, i just love it!! i love seeing the process to a game that i know im going to love so much, and i like how ive seen you give coding tips to those who are going through the same thing as you in the comments right now, it just shows that the care u have for this game extends to all things as well. at the edge of my seat for this game, take your time!
