Here's an idea: for the bow UI you could use a similar system to Wii Sports Resort, and have a smaller circle to show the optimal time to release it. If you keep holding after the circle then your character loses accuracy and releases the bow

This has to be one of the devlogs that impressed me the most. Seeing just how smooth you made the hunting animation absolutely blows my mind - you could have just had the bow keep straith in one of four directions and let the player rely on the crosshead to know where they were shooting, but you chose to go all out and make it way prettier than that. Seriously, incredible work, you should be proud!

So excited!! I love seeing the game get more and more developed. Will definitely purchase the pre-order for the game! Some suggestions I thought would be cool to include. For the hunting and gathering, it'd be cool if you had different environments for different animals, like a cave or lake/swamp. Are you also thinking of having events in the game like halloween or christmas? If not i think that could be cool to include, and you could have tourists come during holiday seasons or something. Anyways, super excited for the game, hope to see another updated soon!
@PixelArchitect

Thank you! Really appreciate it! Yes, I think different environments is a must, to encourage more exploration and to make it more fun. Currently, I've planned a volcanic area, a high mountain snowy area, caves, and an underwater section. More may be possible. Holidays will added to the game as well, though I'm not sure if there will be time to add them to first release.

I'm loving the Restaurant loop and am looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the cooking mechanic. If you're still struggling with that aspect, I might suggest super short, micro games like the battling in Undertale or fishing in Stardew. Whatever you decide to do, im already sold based on your art skills and what you've done so far. Keep going!

Something I noticed watching your character walk around is that it moves faster when it moves diagonally. When I made a top-down style game like this, I encountered this same behavior. If you want it to move the same speed you have to find the unit vector of the two movement directions. If you would like more information, I could provide it :)

I have a suggestion for the hunting section of the game. Instead of meat dropping from the boar, you get a boar carcass. You can butcher the carcass to get meat and the amount/quality of the meat depends on the level of your butcher skill. You can also get pelts, tusks etc. from the carcass to sell or make things out of. I don't know what though.
@PixelArchitect
@PixelArchitect 3 жыл бұрын
The carcass is a cool idea. Give it a bit more realism. I was thinking about potentially making a crafting system for furniture, so pelts could potentially be used there. I'll need to finish the food gameplay loop first to get a better sense of if a crafting system is needed.

It looks great! I’ve watched your time lapse before but only discovered your deploy today. You have a great thing going here! Question: I’m sure there’s a main story but will there be a variety of side quests in the game? Open-world games tend to be a bit difficult to create without making it too repetitive or being a chore after a while. It would be nice to have different types of side quest other than fetch quests, levelling up your restaurant or NPC relationship based quest. So e.g. unlocking new areas, escorting an NPC for a quest, etc.?
@PixelArchitect

I believe a way to help distinguish side characters from the background characters could be a bolder outline. I feel the character sprite is a bit out of place sometimes also with the background, but I wouldn't want to discredit your work, but the style of the characters are brightly colored and they thin line makes them harder to distinguish from the complex background.

From what I saw you would to diversify the gameplay possibilities, how about having an export concept where you export certain raw or refined resources since you already have a port. Could be a way to make money, you can make a marketing sketch of each city to find out what they prefer and whatnot. Another idea: You could also work as a chef on a ship for a limited time.

Haha I've actually considered those ideas for a while. They will probably be implemented in the game in some form. I think butchering the animal on the spot would be a good way to go, that way there's an extra animation and a sense of realism. I'm trying to avoid certain things that creates too big of a barrier to the gameplay, dishwashing/slowly processing animals - even if it means sacrificing some realism

i feel like the kickstarter cover are a bit misleading bcs it features anime style art while your game doesn't. you may want to standardize your art and assets or hire an art director (?) as for the sicle animation, its a bit weird since usually you use a sickle horizontally, it made sense if it was an axe. other than that, this was a solid update! I really like the direction this game is going 👌 oh also, are the "Chef RPG" is the final name of the game?
@PixelArchitect
@PixelArchitect 3 жыл бұрын
You may be right. I might do an alternate cover in the future when the rest of the game art is more finalized. I commissioned the cover art due to us not being able to make a high quality cover art by ourselves at this time, and I think the artist did a good job of moving away from a Japanese Anime style - more towards a western style and to avoid that JPRG look. Agreed about the scythe :) I was thinking the same thing. And Yes, Chef RPG will be the final name. Pretty much every reasonable name has already been used in other cooking games, and this name is meant to convey the idea of the game right away, whilst being easy to remember. Anyways really appreciate the feedback! Glad you are liking the updates.
@DhikaAhmadAulia
@DhikaAhmadAulia 3 жыл бұрын
I have some opinion on the name itself :) Chef RPG might give the expectation of cooking-focused gameplay to the player while the game gives more than that. there are some strong point that might get people interested in your game: hunting, restaurant management, story, etc. I feel like naming it specifically Chef RPG might turn down some potential interest.
@da_Finnci
@da_Finnci 3 жыл бұрын
@@DhikaAhmadAulia Honestly I can't agree with your points. The cover art looks great and in my experience it's quite normal for RPGs to have promotional material that's not just ingame art. Like a movie poster or a book cover ... The descriptive name is perfect in my eyes. You want to gain people's interest and for them to quickly understand the game. It delivers on that for me personally. Is there a genre of cooking-only RPGs that people might confuse it with? Just wanted to add my opinion here, maybe your point of view is more mainstream after all, so who knows :)
@DhikaAhmadAulia
@DhikaAhmadAulia 3 жыл бұрын
@@da_Finnci we're talking about art, obviously very subjective so every opinion are valid 👌 the art style itself is not a problem, but without a proper art direction, it will be a mess in the future. as for the name, my point is that the game offers some gameplay mechanic, I personally drawn into building the restaurant business and less into chef. also, Chef RPG are pretty descriptive name but not really interesting, perhaps some name that still descriptive to chef related term but more interesting?
@PixelArchitect
@PixelArchitect 3 жыл бұрын
@@DhikaAhmadAulia Yes, I think some people won't like the name, but I think that's ok. Personally, I don't really get attached to the exact name of games, since they don't tell much about the gameplay anyways. It's too late to change it now anyways. I agree it doesn't sound as pretty as some other game XD I'll make sure to make a good trailer that can give a clearer idea of the gameplay.

Looking fantastic man. Great you are pursuing this epic passion project. Question - Where did you learn how to make such good pixel art? Right off the bat you have a very professional style, did it just come naturally to you or was it a lot of practice first? Also, what program do you make the initial pixel concepts in before shipping to unity?

Thanks! I had an art background so jumping into pixel art was a bit easier. Though my earlier art still had some issues, I'm still learning new things every day. Practicing by drawing a bit every day for the past year. I'd always recommend hand sketching for starting out. It's a nice quick way to get ideas down.

hey i think for the scythe it could look cool to have it resting on the character's shoulder when idle

I know I am responding months later, but I use a scythe to harvest my flax and that's exactly how I carry it: over my shoulder, blade down. When I am using it, it rests at my hip and I use my body to swing it in even strokes

related to the particle system drawing order problem - why not have two (or more) particle systems per tree? This will be quick and easy to implement and might be a good solution until you decide to maybe make a custom solution.

Hmmm that might work. I'll definitely test it out!

When the player is walking backwards it should move a little bit slower.

I'm really glad you've got someone working with you for the characters because ngl the characters are the weakest part of the game right now. The portraits looks incredible

make the shoulder and elbow more visible on the scythe animation is my only suggestion in this great video

It would be interesting that when collecting fruits such as strawberries with the hand you had to give it 3 blows so that they all fell since that part is 3, so the sickle would be given a higher use and collecting at a low level would be more tedious so you chose to make yourself a sickle first...
@PixelArchitect
@PixelArchitect 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good point! I was thinking of the sickle as a weaker version of the scythe, but you are right, the hand should be weaker than the sickle. I'll play around with it and see if there's a system that works

Congratulations on your game’s expeditious development and move to Kickstarter. I’m curious if you’ll start showing your face in your videos for your audience to get to know you more?

The damage effect doesn't feel strong at all, I think you should make it blink faster with white color

I think I can add some extra particles and make the color blink more apparent. Thanks for the feedback!

Maybe when your player gets hit add a sound or fade red color like when boar gets hit

My opinion is you should add more create-able weapons like sword, blade, hammer, axe, crossbow, etc. It might more interesting than instead of holding a bow the whole game
