Making Cinematic Sound Effects With Reason: From Beginner To Pro

I'm screaming since Reason Record that Reason could become the Holly Grail of Film Sound Designers. Μaybe THIS is a huge bell for Reason Studios to finally implement a video track in its DAW.

I thought there was a 3rd party VST that runs video in Reason? I dont know the name of it.

@@HOLLASOUNDS yes it is. And this is what I use for my TV Ad music productions. Nothing though compares with a native video track. I refuse to change my 20 Years workflow and sound design tools just for the reason that my DAW lacks this feature. If Reason Studios decide to implement it, there's a massive market that is waiting.

@@aresoltero I agree it would definitely be cool and not actually that hard to code, several years ago I found the transparency coloure code for video means that when use in any grafics it becomes clear, so if you load it into MS paint and draw with it while playing a video behind it you can see the video playing through it. I'm going to experiment and see if that colour code works in Reason. If so all they would have to do is make code that triggers there play and stop function in connection to the video playing short cut keys on your keyboard. So you press space for example and both the video and Reason project will play at the same time. This would also require no CPU drain on Reason its self because the video is comming from windows media player.

Agree! Video support is my most requested feature now after VST3 support implementation. Also, multi-midi channels for us Kontakt users would be awesome step up. Fingers crossed

I swear to God if Reason would add track folders and multi Timbrel options for Kontakt (or similar Vst) it would be the king of Filmscoring and Sound Design Tools

Would still need video integration, scripting/batch editing, workflows for non linear editing, and a shitload more explorer options for most sound designers to consider as a serious platform.

This helped greatly! We have a very distorted and soundscape style in our music but since upgraded from R4 straight to R12 has been a bit overwhelming. This helps break down some awesome techniques to get going with so much to go through in R12. Thank you!

I appreciate learning about new ways to completely mangle simple sounds; ways that I'd never considered before. Back in the day - before I lost the ability to truly experiment, (due to a lack of the constraints of knowledge about wtf I was doing) - I'd create some amazing drones. The ability to experiment so wildly with modulation is definitely one of the pros of using Reason. I liked the Kong Drone and liken it to some sounds that I might hear in Reznor's music. Some modulations that are repeated/looped would fit the kind of music that I have in my imagination... something that's akin to what Infiltrator 2 or Stutter Edit 2 can produce. I'd definitely like to watch more of this kind of content.

Just load some random devices and then shove a bunch off effects on it and tern the knobs while recording, then go back and listen to it for any interesting sounds, that single project can be the source of hundreds of possible custom sounds. I'm still going back to random sound sessions from 10 years ago finding sounds.

@@HOLLASOUNDS That's good advice. Since I've acquired Fragments and other multi FX VSTs, I've learned that my decades'-old, boring piano lines have the potential to travel on fantastical journeys to somewhere far better than whence they once once resided.

Well I've finally found some inspiration and have actually loaded up my latest sketch and plugged in my midi keyboard. It's hard to make that first step after a 12 hour shift but that's why it's even more important to grasp it when it's slapping you in the face. I'd be adding some dulcet Diva tones to it right now but I became frustrated by the sizing of Diva in Reason 12. When I resize VSTs I often want their entire UI to extend exactly down to the top of the transport controls so that the entirety of the lowest of Reason's tabs is visible and - more importantly - accessible. There's a lot going on in Diva and the fact that I'm 'only' on a 17" laptop, means that I need some VSTs' UIs to be as big as possible in an instant, (without experimenting with the VSTs' annoyingly-diverse methods of resizing). The efficiency that a simple swipe gesture on the touchpad or a simple key combination could provide would be much appreciated. Back to resizing Diva and trying to make myself remember to embrace the inspiration even after 30 minutes have passed since the slap.

@@TheValueOfN Ofcourse and that's why I have saved every Reason project I have ever made, pretty much every time I open the DAW I save something before leaving, even what I thought sounded unfinished terrible music can be chopped up into slices into stabs or one shots, I could load it into Grain and mash it up, got some creazy sounds doing that. Often I had a good idea years ago saved it and now over 10 years later load load it up and come up with the perfect string melody and now it sounds very good. My number 1 tip to you is save everything delete nothing.

@@adammolot Reasons own EQ match the controls of a physical SSL mixer control, every knob in the mixer corresponds to the visualisation in the window. What advance features are you talking about? You want fancy looking moving graphics? Well dont really fit Reasons Rack which is mainly supposed to mimic the look and function of real hardware.

@@adammolot The only one throwing tantrums is you, I have been making music for 25 years and used Reason for 16 years since 2.0 in 2006, I have never had a problem mixing or doing EQ in Reason long before there SSL style mixer come about. Reason allows VSTs for people like you who want different tools that Reason dont have, you also have the option to use the Rack devices in any other DAW. Stop your moaning and go buy or get a free 3rd party VST or DAW that does exactly what you want.
