what would concrete powder do in resin? that's the real question. like, would the resin harden like normal or would the moisture activate the concrete powder? then would you be able to turn it?

I would like to see what the concrete/resin mixture looks like, but turning it would probably destroy either the tools or the lathe, or maybe just Peter's hands. Regardless, the turning of concrete is probably not the greatest idea.
@g33kf0x7 жыл бұрын
William Ross without knowing the properties of the mixed combination, we can't know that. maybe because of the heat it creates a bunch of tiny air bubbles that actually make it super easy to turn. or it becomes an ungodly dense material that's as hard as steel.

I searched this on buzzfeed, and I think the person who wrote the article made up the instructions to an already existing picture. The eggs in the picture look painted grey on their outsides, so I'm thinking they could've been made out of plaster. Someone should try this with plaster, which could possibly be stronger in this thickness than cement. Then use a bucket of warm water (so it sets faster) to rotate it in. Shouldn't take too long.

Okay okay okay. I have an idea. It comes from the land of baking! Add about a cup of water to a balloon and blow it up to the size you want. Make the concrete a pourable consistency. DIP THE BALOON into the concrete and set it the way you want it to sit when hardened. Repeat several times to build up thickness. Seeing as you would be breaking part of the "shell" anyways, position the knot of the balloon where you would want to break the shell. This is the same idea used to create chocolate bowls or hollow chocolates. NOTICE ME!!!!!😢😢😢😢
@McJaews7 жыл бұрын

Tiffani Davis Wow I thought of the same thing as well
@waynepiaskowski76557 жыл бұрын
Tiffani great thought, things made from flour are more sticky than concrete so while its a good thought thats not going to work so well unless you painted the balloons with a film of concrete bonding agent. I have a lot of experience with concrete. If you don't mix concrete to the correct consistency it does things you don't want it to do. Using concrete countertop mix from Quikrete would probably be the easiest bet. It comes in an 80lb blue bag. You would still need to sieve out the aggregate. This way we can avoid the entire conversation of superplasticizer and other additives. Concrete is very temperature sensitive. Use cold water and keep it cold while rolling it otherwise it will cure faster. Even the heat from your hands should be avoided in this case. You could also add latex to the mix to increase its strength and bond to the balloon. Not so sure you would want to use short strand fibreglass but it might help to hold the shape during the process.... I may give this a try during my next concrete project.
@Elspidermariachi7 жыл бұрын
I see in another comment that pure cement works better instead of concrete. Do you think it would work if you dipped the balloon into concrete rather than concrete?

Aggregate cement is a mix of cement, sand and stone. You may have sifted out the stone but of course the sand is still there which makes the mix weaker than you need. You might be better with 100% cement rather than the cement/sand mix which was probably a 1:3 mix. Awesome outcome though, thanx
@daverudolph77777 жыл бұрын
the sand and rocks make the concrete stronger, not weaker. you can buy portland cement by itself and strengthen it with chopped fiberglass or other fibers to toughen it as well, but some sand in the mix is a good idea. They used to use horsehair in plaster, or sawdust, almost anything tough and long will add strength

Cement/concrete is TOTALLY the wrong material for making hollow casts. What you want is ceramic, specifically slipcasting. Ceramic slip is really cheap (Less than 20 dollars a gallon), making a plaster mold is simple, and the only really tricky part would be firing the piece without a kiln -- but there's lots of articles online about how to fire pottery inside a simple charcoal kettle grill. Plus with a proper mold, you could quickly make multiple copies.

With the plaster mold you would lose the individuality. However, you could pour slip over a leather hard cast egg to get great texture.

you could also do a pit fire instead. lots cheaper and pretty easy. dig a hole, fill with fire and your ceramics. let burn all day. you get really cool looking stuff out of it too. the char marks would really help authenticate your egg.

its more the 'krete' because its *concrete* mix, not cement. Concrete has sand and aggregate in it, along with portland cement. What Peter needed was pure portland cement, without any sand or aggregate.

concrete is not just some form of "sand". To crystallize the concrete quick additives are also in that "sand". To dry very liquid concrete it needs more additive. So the concrete you used is not suitable for this project. Overhere in the Netherlands we have special concrete, in boxes of 1 kilogram, for these special projects. When mixed it has the consistency of eggwhite and hardens within 15 minutes. There...now you know.
@연어초밥-f5t7 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, love your videos. What you mate from that concrete mix was mortar mix => concrete = (cement, sand, aggregate + water) when mortar = (cement, sand + water); 2nd u could make a negative mold of an egg (styro), hang an inflated ballon on the inside, and fill it up with mortar, thin fi=3mm iron wires => great for reinforcement of the mortar. Also possible to make the crack line out of thin styro strips glued to the balloon

long ago I made concrete eggs...I used the larger plastic easter eggs you put candies in. I remember a friend had me spray oil in the egg forms first and after pouring and letting set just a bit, we carefully put them together. they hold the shape, and you can roll them to make sure it stays all coated. they turned out well, I didnt use tons of water..its like making pancake batter for me, you know when its right. it you put them together before they get all really set up, they stick together without a seam to speak of. its been a very long time. I am going to give it a try again, now you reminded me..but balloons aren't something I ever thought of using. plaster works really well too!

If someone wants to replicate this over-mold style make sure that each pour is done somewhat close together because concrete will crack and fracture on the join lines if one is wet and the other dry. What they probably did in the buzzfeed video (I haven't seen it) is use a retarder admix (chemical addition) to slow the set time and make a mixture that is very close to a .5 water to cement ratio (W/C ratio); Higher than that it may not set at all. The mix they gave (1/3 cup water to 2/3 cup cement) has roughly a W/C of .17lb water /.55lb cement (.31 ratio). Overall I have no idea how they would make a hollow concrete ball inside a single balloon with a thick or a thin mix. Loved the video Peter, keep up the good work!

The mix in the buzzfeed video says 1 cup "quick-set concrete" to 1/3 cup water but it is incredibly wet and almost looks like they used a 1:1 or 1:(2/3) c:w ratio. It certainly appears that they poured in more than 1/3 cup of water, but its hard to really tell with their stop motion style of video editing.
