He was taking me fishing when I was 7 and we got in a car accident when a guy ran a red light drunk and killed my dad and big brother and I was badly injured. Looking at a card and saying it will grade a 9 is cool but buying a card you’ll only make money on if it gets a 10 is insane . Just walk away

You are taking a calculated risk at a 10, but it's more about if the card WILL grade at LEAST a 9, then how much will he risk losing. If that amount is small, then it's definitely worth the risk. In this case, I think if it grades a 9, he overpayed by about $20. So the thought process I am sure he had was "I'm taking a shot at a 10, but if it gets a 9, I will lose $20". Then you make your decision on that. The key is that it HAS to grade a minimum of 9. You also have to take in the value of the card in the amount of risk, and at $20, I would have easily done that or may have paid even more, as if that card Gems, the profit is insane. I may have even paid a bit more for the card myself. This is no different than seeing Dealers price a Raw card well above comps cus they tell me that it's a flawless card that will likely get a 10. I always roll my eyes and walk away, but I am seeing it more at shows where a RAW card is priced higher than a PSA 9 and the explanation is always that the card is perfect and the Seller feels it has a great shot at a 10. Now I find myself being ok paying more on a RAW card if it indeed seems "perfect" and I intens to grade it, but always keeping in my mind that PSA 9 value as a baseline risk.
