Making Fishing weights for CHEAP with Do-it Molds

First time ever making fishing weights by melting down the lead and pouring them myself with the Lee 4-20 melting pot and Do-it Molds.

My grandpa used to have buckets of wheel weights and made his own fishing weights just like this! We still have a few peanut butter jars of them that he made.

Melt the wheel weights first in an iron pot, then flux it with saw dust or wax to get the impurities out. Skim the floating junk off the top so that you don’t damage your production pot as I did mine. The new wheel weights are alloy and eventually will stop up the Lee melting pot, learned the hard way here and had to buy another. Thanks

I used these with the Team Catfish weight slides to make a kzbin.infoUgkxdmsDj7fQXe77DC0l7P7ua8B3PiESUubM Carolina rig and they were perfect for the ponds I fish. I have also used them to make 3 way rigs and these work perfectly. Haven't had any issues with them snagging in rocks or in weeds yet.

If you are using used wheel weights best to wash them very thoroughly before using as salt can hold moisture and water and molten lead do not mix well.

If you black soot the mould and the eye rod, it acts as a non stick. to get the soot, get a candle and hold the flame on the mould and the area will blacken with soot.

So this has to do with the egg weights, I build ditty poles and use some good size line to rig them with, could I sub out the “hole rod” with say a welding rod that I have knocked the flux off of to make the hole bigger? Because at the moment I’m having to slowly bore the holes out on the weights and that just takes forever… because well it’s lead and friction heat … two things that don’t really work together too well, yea I know I could use a sinker slide with a different style weight but I like that inline aesthetic and it cuts down on my supply cost not having to buy beads and slides … any insight is appreciated. always wanted to play around with this but the cost of the molds and other equipment are too high unless i'm going to sell the weights and jigheads. How much many sinkers can you lose in a season? I have packages of weights that are 10 years old. Some of the 1-3 lbs deep drop weights are older than i am.
