I have never used dried hulls for tincture. I'm not sure that you can. I did a quick internet search and it seems they do sell a powder of the dried hulls and its typically used for salves or other topical preparation. I wish I could be more helpful. ~Peace

How do you know if your mixture has gone moldy? I have had my tincture sitting in a somewhat cold room from 7mos. I’m about to strain it, but I’m not sure if it’s moldy or not. I didn’t shack it at all throughout the time it was brewing. Did I mess it up by not doing that?

What percentage of alcohol did you use? As long as your alcohol was 35% or higher (70 Proof or higher) your tincture should be shelf stable. I have not had an experience where an alcohol-based tincture has grown mold, but my assumption is that it would be prevalent on the bottom of lid. I would also check the consistency of your tincture. It should not be slimy or thickened in any way. But like I said, with an alcohol-based tincture, they are shelf, stable for many, many years. Just like vodka or other liquor. Let me know if you have any other questions though and thank you so much for asking.

@@EarthseedDetroit it 100proof so that’s 50% I think. That’s interesting that you say that, there was no mold on the lid or even on the top layer of the tincture. It just looked like weird residue spots, but it’s not slimy or thick. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to smell like, but it mostly smells like vodka mixed with iodine. For the months that it was in my office the temperature stayed around 50-65 degrees and the last few months it never went above 70 degrees..so it has been quite cold in the room I had it in. Because this is my first time, I’m nervous about getting it right. I never shook the mixture at all so I was thinking that because I didn’t do any of that I may have caused it to go bed. Too many people on here keep saying you have to shack it or it will go bad 😵‍💫. So that made me think I ruined it. Also this is my first time ever really dealing with black walnut hulls so I don’t really know how they react to vodka over time. So with that being said, do you think I’m good to go forward?

@@TriggaTreDay It sounds like you did just fine! If I had done that exact process, I would think that tincture is good to go. I think shaking is more of an issue with tightly packed materials such as fresh leaves or flowers so that nothing is sitting out above the alcohol in the jar. I shake sometimes, when I think of it, and sometimes I don't, and have had good results so far.

It is anti-parasitic, anti-fungal, antimicrobial and antiseptic. Can be used internally by the dropper for certain gastrointestinal issues or parasites. and externally like for ring worm or foot fungus in a foot soak.
