You were so lucky to find a good spot to park your rv to avoid the strongest winds! That was one of the worst storms to ever hit Iowa and Northern Illinois! A tornado that day damaged one of our friends fence that day! Luckily you and the rv are safe! Great video! Loved seeing the strong straight line wind footage from the storm!

Wow, you REALLY dodged a bullet with that derecho! It was one of the most destructive agricultural storms in decades - 14 MILLION acres of crops were destroyed across the Midwest that day, to say nothing of people’s homes, farms and businesses. Loved the video as always, Robert. You’re an inspiration to those of us just dipping our toes in long term travel!

One county to the north of Iowa City, we had winds well in excess of 100 miles per hour. Three months later, some people are still cleaning up the damage and/or waiting for construction crews to repair roofs and other damage.

Many folks resorted to living in tents, having no funds to move elsewhere, after their apartment complexes were badly damaged by the derecho/straight line winds.

I’m in Iowa and a couple of things; First of all, THANK YOU for calling Des Moines a “big” city! I just wanted to correct the information you were given about the derecho. Lifetime residents of the Midwest (myself included) have NEVER experienced a storm like that one. The last storm like it was more than 100 years ago. Keep on bringing the U.S. to our small screens! You inspire us all!

Ohio had a derecho a couple of years ago....they happen every year or two.....just because they don't happen to you doesn't mean they aren't happening

Another great video Robert. I've watched this one a couple times. Amazing that Minitini II stood up to the derecho--made sense how you parked it and a nice illustration for Winnebago for how their products are built and endure. @40:38, "Yeah, I think I should've worn my hoodie. It's, the temperature is dropping. I mean, we're in the middle of August here." -- welcome to northern Minnesota! We're about as far from an ocean as you can get in the US so the temperature is just different. When you were talking about Angle Inlet, you were saying you supposed it was only accessible from Canada or by boat. In the winter you can drive across the frozen lake. That's what was done in the winter of 2020/2021 when the Canadian border was still closed. It's that Minnesota thing again. :)

WOW, loved this weeks video, lake pelican is beautiful and the straight line wind storm, like a mini hurricane here in Florida. Liked the very beginning of the Mississippi river and crossing on a small footbridge. Can you imagine winter there if it's that cool in summer berrrrr. Thanks for all the wonderful adventures! It was awesome to see you were here in Des Moines. It is fun to see our fair city in the eyes of a visitor. While we take so many things for granted, it was beautiful in your review. I would love to meet you next time you stop by. The derecho was crazy! It crossed 3 or 4 states and the winds were actually over 100 mph in areas! Cedar Rapids lost 50% of their canopy in half an hour. Des Moines also had a lot of damage. It gave us all a glimpse of what it is like to be in a hurricane. I don't believe we have ever seen anything like it. Yes, the interstate was littered with semis blown over by the wind! Power was out for many for over a week. It was crazy and weird that you were in the area when it happened. I love your videos. I wish I could travel and see all the things I have seen through your travels, but since I can't, I get to enjoy all the lovely places in our country through you. Thanks again!

Hello Traveling Robert😊😊🎸🎸, Where are the Pelicans? Oh, the storm must have blown them away hahaha😊😊! Scary situation with that Deracho and seeing so many large trucks blown over on the road. Happy you got through that safely. I fondly remember my trip through MN not to long ago driving the upper Peninsula of Michigan and northern Wisconsin to Duluth, MN and driving along a very scenic highway 61 along the north shore of Lake Superior to Split Rock State Park. I then drove across the state and got very close to Itasca State Park and ended up in Detroit Lakes,MN and Fargo, ND. It's so nice that you had friends that hosted you and the boat ride was SPECTACULAR. There are just so many lakes in MN. The Lake of the Woods area was beautiful also looking north into Western Ontario and Eastern Manitoba, Canada. This was a great video and looking for to the next one. 👍👍👍

Hey Robert, happy Sunday! You didn't miss much when you bypassed the World's Biggest Truck Stop. I spent the night there in an RV once...nothing to write home about. I visited Kirk's future birthplace years ago as a side trip when I went to the Iowa State Fair (which was fantastic!) Riverside still looks to be a sleepy little town (nothing wrong with that), but it seems like they've spruced up their tourist-related offerings a bit. Live long and prosper!

Holy cow! You were "blessed" to ride out the Derecho w us! THIS is NOT normal Iowa weather! You were Very lucky you didn't get damage. To SEE IOWA you have to get off the interstates. Iowa is not flat but interstates make it seem that way. To see Iowa you need to hit the gravel and we have far more to see than Buddy Holly and Capt Kirk. You didn't get to see the Worlds largest popcorn ball! Lmao. Iowa has many hidden wonders.
