Been in the Netherlands for years now. I was unable to make at least one very close dutch friend. But I have a lot of friends who are immigrants like me. I think the problem is the way dutch culture works. Almost all of them have very close friends, these friends have been in their life since their childhood, so it's expected they won't accept someone foreign into their life, especially the mid-age group (the same as me) you cannot expect they will have you as their best friends.

I think this is much more for the rural dutch than urban people. But, nonetheless, I do think people quickly become "disposable" as friends to the Dutch. If they really click with some people and then make some other friends along the year, they will easily dump the newer friends if keeping the contact becomes tough because of say, switched studies or the person living a bit farther away. In my experience they will mercilessly forget about you when it isn't handy for them to maintain the contact anymore. Of course, generalizing.

If you want to make real Dutch friends, then work on your Dutch and the friends will pop up in no time. Because the mentality of a lot of Dutch people is that they don't really want to deal with foreigners who do not speak Dutch and just English for the sake of communication while Dutch is just easier on the lips.. No offense, its just how it is..

I don't think it has anything to do with culture. If you live in the or close to the place where you were born and have lived your entire life. You also have a social life that's already established. They don't need new friends. Expets on the other side left everything behind and are in the need of a new social life. which automatically makes them eassier to become friends with. In my opinion it is really not hard to become friends with the Dutch. Look for people with common intrests trhough a club or a hobby. Be direct and open. And most of all, don't try to hard. And it really helps to be able to speak dutch. Although most dutch people speak perfectly englisch they don't really connect if they have to speak it.

Sorry to hear that. But it seems to me that it was just a spell of bad luck. True, blood is thicker than water. So we Dutch have family, blood relatives, inlaws, buddies, close friends, friends, neighbours, and acquaintances. *In that order!* So, becoming friends with Dutchies is easy. And when you hit it off you will be a close friend or even a buddy in no time. Seems to me you just met the wrong people. Don't sweat it!

@@nova_verse6284 Sorry, but I differ. As a Dutchie I welcome any expat wanting to integrate. The language barrier will be the least of your problems. The Dutch are usually in awe of people proving making progress in learning Dutch, and will offer help where ever possible. Ever noticed the Dutch having problems refusing help? ☺

It sounds counterintuitive, but it has been easier for me to make Dutch friends in the older age group who do volunteering work in different areas; they have more free time (they are already retired), they're nicer, they speak a bit slower and (very important) they tend not to switch to English when they hear my foreign accent, but encourage me to keep learning Dutch, so I feel more comfortable around them and they seem to be comfortable around me and my foreign "quirks". In my own age group it has been quite more difficult; they are polite, but that's pretty much it.

Om in Nederland vrienden te maken zou ik nog als tip willen geven om direct te zijn en niet te hard te proberen. Verder sluit je inderdaad aan bij een club of vereniging of iets dergelijks. Zoek mensen op met gedeelde interesse.

It's so satisfying that I can follow your video now. Of course I can't understand everything, but I don't need to stop the video so often and search for words. 🥳 Mario I can hear your italian accent (ik ben ook italiaan) and it's so weird like a person can find cute the same accent on another person, but hate it on ourselves.

It's definitely an American thing. I can say that as an English guy. When I went to the USA at first I was impressed by how many friends people seemed to have. Then I realised they would say 'oh, he's a friend of mine' even if they'd only met them a couple of times. In the UK, we'd say 'Oh, I know him'. We reserve the word 'friend' for friends. I still feel uncomfortable with the Facebook definition of friends.

As expat/immigrant I need to make friends in my new country. I'm always desperate to make friends...but for the locals is different, they don't feel this need

!!!*A QUESTION* !!! Hey there peopleses. Anyone know what kind of accent the lady from 6:50 onwards has? I'd steal it and keep it in a box, let it fester, then unleash it upon companion and competitor. No discernment. Just a continuous, unwarranted divvying up of utterance. (I get an utterance! You get an utterance! You get an utterance! (yes, you! Because: ) EVERYBODY GETS AN UTTERAAAANCE!!) . If you could just leave me your answer in a reply, that would be lovely. ^-^

Sorry, cut the BS! Just tell a Dutchie you want to be friends, and why. Slim chance they will refuse. If only because they are open for a challenge, and like to convince you how awesome the Dutch are. 🙃

De laat je weg. Wehebben met DE mensen gesproken. Een journalist zou het denk ik iets ontspannender zeggen, dus met een spreekwoord of iets als De mensen in de wijken, wat vinden ze er van? Just a thougth ..
