Leon.... This has to be one of your best videos. Only you have the gift of getting strangers to share very good stories/ impressions. 🙏 As a current Californian who will be setting up a home in the Netherlands in a few years, I found the episode hilarious and 100% accurate. There were light-hearted responses and sobering ones as well. A few observations: 1) Pleasantries and superficiality are baked into American culture. As a 'global citizen', very few Americans today understand the difference between acquaintances vs friends. Friends requires a deep investment in the other person while acquaintances are generally 'low investment relationships - in large part' 2) @3:18 Absolutely, most Americans in business lack humility and rarely look outward to learn from others or other countries (former Fortune 500 director). Thereby, Americans tend to be very wasteful of resources and 'reinvent the wheel.' @3:36 That is ignorance masquerading as confidence/arrogance. 3) @8:14 In America, everything feels fleeting as the societal pace is fast/aggressive. @11:24 This moment really got to me. When I was at university with many international students, we gathered and met socially (not about school) but to get to know about one another on a personal level. No politics, no competition, but an opportunity to socialize (a skill many Americans don't understand in the true sense). I miss that cultural norm quite a bit and wonder is this sort of thing considered quaint or still part of Dutch culture. Thank you Leon and Mario for letting me experience this from California.

I am also a Californian, and yes I found those bits very personal and real to my own experiences here. It is true that friendships start easily, but hardly ever get beyond surface level, it's very unfortunate. Also the fake niceness I've never been a fan of. I'm also a native Afrikaans speaker. After about a year of learning, I can understand the spoken Dutch at the speed seen in this video with about 80% comprehension. Once you get used to the sound changes, its relatively easy to follow. Understanding Dutch, however, is 100x easier than producing it since there are so many small differences that are irrelevant to the comprehension but critical to the production of the language.

Hmm.... I'm a bit annoyed by these comments. I have been living and working in the Netherlands for 24 years and came here as an international teacher who later married a Dutchman and settled in one of the southern provinces, although I still work a lot in the north. I have always loved and am deeply rooted in my country, our forefathers and mothers who sacrificed much for our good, for the benefit of those born after them. And that's why I'm DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). My six-time great-grandfather is John Adams, second president of the US and first ambassador to the Netherlands. Throughout my life I have had many dear American friends and family who have nothing fake about them, their beliefs or lifestyles. And they have done nice things for their communities with caring and generous hearts. The stereotypes you hear here through comments from Dutch people who have vacationed, lived and worked in America are interesting, but only because they stem from personal views and experiences in what they are right about America as being a huge country... that is, it being a salad bowl of many different views, cultures and communities.

From Idaho here, we do have a lot of extremes but not as bad generally as the man made it out to be but true to an extent. It is very diverse however, state to state or even city to city in my area. Definitely more emphasis on moving around and rather than family and commitment. Vegetables and fruit are so expensive comparatively to processed foods which sucks.

Americans do have another fault and that is taking so much pride in you not speaking Russian. In hindsight the enormous amount of money the people in America donate to that cause could have been put to better use on failing infrastructure, health care and sports. Inventing a sport at a time when travel to Europe was weeks by boat and not including those countries in your unknown sport and yet hyping up the Championship by calling it the World Series is enough to make anyone's butt hurt. You are totally justified to feel as you do and deserve a safe space to cope.

@TheMVCoho The only reason why the US "helps" other countries is so that they can control those countries. Besides that, just because the US was one of the many countries that deliberate Europe from a war decades ago doesn't mean I have to approve on everything that the US does and thinks. And to end with, restrict your guns. The money you save on mass shooting problems you can use on affordable health care 😉

Dus is het echt "the pot calling the kettle black".

Everything was spot on about most ppl in California, fake ppl. Each State is quite different. Southern States r more friendly ppl. NYC ppl will help u but they’re always in a rush. The lady that said someone in the Mall looked at her strangely when she asked for help. I’ll guarantee it was California. In NYC we have too much diversity to act that way. Also, NY’ers are more conservative than California. California ppl r superficial & NY’ers don’t really like them. Most Dutch speak English very well, so I’m not sure why she had a problem? Unless, the ppl she asked for help were kids. Adults here don’t act like that. Also, the guy that made the remark about the KKK no we don’t have those hooded guys walking around anymore since early 1980’s They wear regular clothes now & are called skinheads. Those kinds of ppl r mostly in the Mid-West or southern parts of U. S. The States have always had xenophobic issues with any outsider even white foreigners. Now it’s more Mexicans coming into the U. S. They’re fighting against. However, in past history Europe also had issues w/blacks , Indigenous Indians & Spanish. Europe just dropped the mistreatment of Africans sooner than the U. S. The U. S is still a young infant country. Why would you mimic a baby. I like the Dutch, not every American thinks the same. We’re raised by our parents & takes on their views.

They don't respect property boundaries and if they believe you are not using something, it will mysteriously wind up missing from your property. Most importantly, I have found most who speak about religion and their church are the ones who violate scripture most often and will lie when caught. Invest in video surveillance at your property and don't announce it. You will be surprised by what you see.

Jammer.

My favorite line about Americans - 'Hamburgers and Robust People'. As a Californian, the In-N-Out Burger drive-through window will never be the same. Order Speaker: 'What would you like today???' Me: LOL, LOL, LOL, LOL. Order Speaker: Will you let me in on the joke? Me: 'It is a Dutch thing!'

Wow. The generalizations and stereotyping in this were fascinating. Especially the lady who was critical of the meal portions. What about value for money? I thought the Dutch were known for being cheap, heh heh. Anyway, I’m tired of all this “Hello, how are you?” BS which Europeans in particular spread about us. It’s called “politeness.” I’ll take that over Dutch directness/rudeness anytime.

Maybe the Dutch should be concerned more about what their PM and government is doing to destroy Dutch farmers and their farms?
