Here's something fun to do with the kids on a cold winter day. Birdseed ornaments are super fun and easy to make using just a few ingredients. As winter wears on, seeds become less available so providing a little extra nourishment benefits the birds and keeps them coming to your garden. It's a win for everyone!
When my girls were small, I was always on the lookout for fun and affordable things we could do that would engage them with nature.
Since we always loved watching the birds in the garden, winter birdseed ornaments were perfect and the girls could use whatever cookie cutters they wanted. We have a lot!
In the video, I doubled my ingredients because I wanted to make several ornaments. The mini bundt cakes took a lot of seed mix but if you used smaller cookie cutters, I'm sure you'd have more.
Here's the ingredient list for one recipe:
2 cups birdseed, any type (some mixes have nuts so beware if you have a nut allergy in your family)
1 packet unflavored gelatin, I used the Knox brand
2 tbsp cold water
1/3 cup boiling water
non-stick cooking spray
skewer or chop stick
string or twine
Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5B, recently changed to 6a, in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.
