What a terrific idea. As you mentioned, the texture and “noise” are an added bonus. I love paper that satisfies my tactile and hearing senses. Btw, I often use essential oils to add “smell” to my journals, so you have sight, sound, touch and smell…!!!!

This is an awesome idea. I've made them using baby oil but it's a huge mess. I've got tons of napkins. Tfs. Oh a little tip. When you're mod podging, if you will tear a piece of plastic wrap and ball it up, it makes the perfect tool for smoothing your project and doesn't stick or tear. 😉

Also, you could do what I do. When I find a napkin I like and want to do the technique with the pattern on the napkins. I scan the napkins with my scanner, then I can print it on a heavier paper such as vellum, tracing paper, etc. :)

I have lots of napkins. I have been collecting for along time. Where did you get the small leaf one at? I use Saran Wrap as glue. I iron my napkins on cardstock with it. It is so beautiful. It turns out absolutely flat. You can add Mod Podge on top. You can iron the napkins on any hard flat surface that can stand the heat. I place a couple pieces of tablet paper over the napkin. It's also very fast, no drying time. Try it you'll love it. You gave me a great idea on making some napkin flowers. Thanks so much.

OK just so I understand (because that sounds really interesting) you have card stock on the bottom and then you put a piece of saran wrap or kitchen plastic and then you put the napkin on top and then put another piece of paper to protect the napkin on top of that and then iron it. And you're saying that the plastic melts and it adheres the napkin to the card stock because that is so cool. And if so I have to try that today. Look forward to hearing back from you, hopefully 💖💖

Some say that method works, others don't. You can iron the napkin, separate layers first, to the plastic side of freezer paper too. More tutorials on this method seem to be successful.

Great ideas! Those black and white napkins are lovely! One thing... And it's just a pet peeve of mine so don't take this personally, it just irks me, is... You are INKING the edges, not distressing them. People always think distress ink makes "things" distressed, it does not, it makes them inked. Distress ink is water reactive... Which means the ink ITSELF is distressable, not the object it's on! It is an ink that has been made to react with spritzing, creating a blotchy "distressed" effect of the original solid colour. I'm no ink "chef" lol so can't remember the exact ingredients the ink has that allows it to do that, but there are videos where tim holtz explains how it works. The newer distress oxide inks turn white and chalky when spritzed giving a blanched kind of look. So if you like making your page edges look old and distressed, any old brown ink pad can be used, it doesn't have to be branded distress ink! Most people pay more for distress inks, yet never use them to their full potential, if you just want aged page edges, buy a cheap ink pad! 😁😁😁 EDIT*** found a link where tim holtz explains xxxxxxx kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZW0Y2SPq6t5jKM
@LollyPalooza
@LollyPalooza 5 жыл бұрын
thanks for the explanation. I will most likely still use it as "distressing" as referring to applying his brand of distress inks. :) I see your point though

@@LollyPalooza thank you for your positive response! I was expecting my head being bitten off when i really didn't mean it badly! Literally it's like one of those lil things that makes me get an eye twitch or something, like people scraping fingernails down a chalk board... And of course i knew what you meant and everyone says it, just sharing one of my lil irks! Plus of course some people may not have realised all the ways to use distress inks, OR may have been saving up for a few and don't intend to be all arty with them, in which case, any will do. In fact, i also initially lusted after them, then realised I could save my money, as I'm a crafter, not an artist! Now I need to find that gloss spray ... and some beautiful napkins like yours. Ps: we tend to call them serviettes in England too, and call the cloth ones napkins. It's where we get the word "nappies" from, as babies had terry toweling cloth squares folded into triangles and pinned on before the invention of disposables nappies! (What you call diapers! Now there's a strange word... Diapers....wonder where that came from...?) 😘😘😘

how about putting a napkin on vellum paper u could probably do 3 things to get the same effect or stronger idea 1 I would try spraying the vellum paper with adhesive and then stick the napkin to it and then spray the clear or idea 2 mod podge it to the vellum idea 3 taking the vellum paper and stamping it you can already see through it and design it the way you want .believe it or not I haven't tried this myself but the idea came to mind... but I really love vellum paper what you print on it on top does not seep through i have painted on it with acrylics and had gotten some really awesome paper out of it . ive also tried oil paints on it and having some really cool results... just my 2 cents . love the idea thanks for sharing

Great ideas. Have you seen the technique of adding modpodge to the paper and letting it dry. Then add your napkin on top of the dry modpodge and iron on top of napkin with piece of parchment on top. The heat of iron will melt the modpodge and fuse it to napkin with no wrinkles at all

Not to mention the cost, cheap napkins just went through the roof by the time you aerosol them 2-4 times, your labor cost of doing this, more labor fiddling with punching... buying a sheet of paper at Hoblob is sounding better by the minute.

Dear Lolly, I can’t thank you enough for your advice to razor off with a ruler and craft knife the uneven excess of the interior journal pages. I’ve made two JJs; each time it was crazy-making, trying to cut off excess with my trimmer, first the right side of one page, then the left, until everything fit inside the cover, but nearly as unevenly as when I started. Also, I too watched Nik’s Video, now yours, and am ready to go outside with my giant piece of cardboard, ,my spray shield, and start spraying some napkins. In addition, you might find excellent pointers on decoupage through Patti Elhoff’s tutorials. She’s done nothing but decoupage for like decades. For instance, always spread the decoupage glue from the center out. Patio elf. Upcycle with Decoupage. I’m so glad to now be a steady viewer of yours!

I don’t dispose of the first and second ply because I use them. I love using the in between ply because there is often a very light pattern on them that is nice for collaging. The totally white layer makes a great looking faux rice paper. You can adhere leaves and dried flower petals on it which gives it a mulberry paper-like appearance. There are a couple of videos on KZbin about how to do this. I’ve varied the technique I saw in the videos by using rice paper sketching sheets as a base.

My spray box is a cut down cardboard carton. I use straight pins in the corners and middle edges. It pierces through the paper and box and holds it down quite well. I always trim the edge off my paper after it’s dry anyway ( sometimes the napkin ripples along the edge or doesn’t get quite enough spray) so the pin holes get cut away

You did emphasize spraying that stuff in a well ventilated area, but might I add, to those who are very chemical sensitive to wear a respirator. For me, the slightest whiff of it is enough to make me ill. Wish I wouldn’t, because the process of making these would be fun. I do like the end results though.

With the flower idea, you could punch with a pale pink for example and layer it in between the black and white napkin print . Or layer a pink napkin layer in between. And then save the regular paper “ punch backer” flowers for another project.

I would on the flowers use your cording and needle to secure with a tiny pretty bead in the center. You can buy all kinds of beads or make your own ...paper beads. But once secured with the thread - you can fluff the petals. There are excellent videos on making paper flowers that you could use the napkin paper as your base instead of the tissue paper or fabric they use. I might use the card stock or colored paper piece as backing and contrast layer to show it off too.

Why not try some matte laminator sheets put your napkins one face up to the top and the other face down facing the bottom. In other words putting the pretty side toward the outside. Now put 2 pieces of regular copy paper between the napkins, this way only one side of the napkin is laminated. The napkins will be more table and look like pretty wax paper

For the first coat of spray, maybe try sticking a needle in the very corners to anchor it down. The hole would probably fill in and not be noticeable when you remove the pins to do the second coat

I use Teflon mats like these: amzn.to/2F4sHu8 Mod Podge washes off with water, but don't wait too long -- you'll want to wash it right away. I like to rinse the brush, then even set the bristles in an inch of water for an hour

Are these useable as a cover for a notebook, can they be glued or be used with double sided tape and will they ter? Are they waterproof?
@LollyPalooza
@LollyPalooza 4 жыл бұрын
These are still tearable. You would not be able to use it as a cover, but it can be glued. If you want to use double sided tape, apply the tape to the PROJECT and add the glassine napkin on top of that, instead of applying the tape to the glassine napkin.
