Watching the red kites swooping under the drone has taken this video to the number one slot of my year, im 67 and as an 11 year old i watched a similar display from the top of an oak tree, as what was probably one of the last red kites in Wales went into history.. for a few moments i was 11 again... even though they are back here again, the best i can hope for is to see them in the far distance.. this has really hit a high for me..

So glad to see you guys back, you’ve been missed❤! I loved the kites, how cool to be flying the drone among them. Watching the cutting, turning and baling of your field was amazing. The guys doing the field work for you are almost like poetry in motion. The amount of work you’ve been doing is insane, can’t wait to see more of the buildings when you have a chance to share. Love hearing all of the plans you have for every bit of your property - recycling, reusing. Don’t forget to take care of yourselves ❤

We never bring round bales of hay in the same day as its baled, needs a good week outside to cool and sweat. The rain doesnt really get into them as they are like thatch and shed the water. They will heat up and end up like black tobacco. All a good learning curve, keep the Hayliage as you will need it. Great videos and love all you are doing.

Was always brought up to think haylage was higher sugar than hay , in fact our haylage is lower than hay ( we’ve tested this ! ) the fermentation process actually uses up the sugar content but haylage is more calorific. I safely feed haylage to to my laminitic , which after a year of soaking hay is welcome ! What a great amount of bales you got !

Nice haying video. I'm a bit surprised by the hay needs for 3 horses. These bales weigh close to 400kg. Even when eating 25kg of hay per day and 120 days of barn stay, that would make the need for 25-30 bales. If they stay 6m inside or stay outside all the time, the need or waste will of course be higher.

You are not just renovating houses, you're renovating a farm. It would be stupid not to deal with the field and storage just because there are million other things to do. A lot of things can be done in any weather and any season. Hay and haylage is one of those things that have to be done at particular time, otherwise, it would be another year of waiting for you. And good news! the storage doesn't look glamorous but it looks waterproof and sturdy, which means that one building done, few dozen more to go. And does this mean that Tuna will be on your farm soon, considering you are getting ready to feed her during winter? Aaaand, you said three horses... are there another two that haven't made appearance on the channel yet or are you planning to get more so she has company?

@@sht-farm yeah we have had to evict some machinery from our barn to fit all of it in! Will you be stacking your hay once it has had chance to cool, as I would reccommend putting down either pallets or some plastic as our barn has a dirt floor too and the bales can suck up moisture from the ground
@sht-farm
@sht-farm Ай бұрын
Perhaps, but I think this set will be eaten up fairly sharpish so it might not make it to Christmas depending on the condition the horses come in at. Tuna might need haylage straight away to maintain her weight, but the other two are looking really well in their current location before they make the move to Scotland in Autumn 🤓 The hotter 4 bales including the roast potato will likely be a bit poor/dusty/mouldy for our lot so they can always be on the bottom rows of any stacks. We do have some pallets held separate if needed though - or about 20 bent and damaged metal gates that we could try to manufacture a bed on stilts from 🧐
@oakfarmagricultural506
@oakfarmagricultural506 Ай бұрын
@@sht-farm yeah I mean if they will be used quite quickly then it may never be a problem, it just depends ohw wet the ground can get as our barn can get damn even after a short shower, gates would work fine or anything really that gets them off the ground then air can get inbetween and dry it out

Yes, but the downside is it’s a bit thinner than good black stuff, so handling careful is important. Not many tears though to tape, mainly from rocks on the field than handling 👍 it’s also handy for those normally picky horse people who want to see what’s inside before opening too… 🫣

You shouldn't really feed horses this year's hay, will it be good enough and not too dusty, also are you having the silage tested for sugars etc before you feed it. We had an old stone barn and I can remember having to move many small bales because it was getting too much heat, super hard work but it saved the crop 😊

Yes that's it! Some of it has been quarried in years gone by, but we've got a mixture of granite and shale/greywackes pointing at 45 degrees or so, plus tiny patches of red sandstone lower down the farm yard. Total soil cover is about 3 inches on a good lower grass section on the field before the first rock layer, then another 2 inches of softer stuff before you hit the solid base 👍
