Really enjoy the vidoes. I started using aresol silicone mold release. Seems to work really well.

I learned when building my cabinets with Hickory, when you are molding an edge, just run it across the jointer and take about an 1/8" off and try the same edge again. It usually will cut just fine on the next pass since you already have most of the material removed.

Yes, I actually had my bullnose setup like a jointer, so after the first pass I could keep running “nibble” passes until it was clean.

When bull nosing the treads, maybe two small passes on each tread instead of one to eliminate tear out? Another great video thanks

When you’re changing those carbide tips, if you mark the dull side with a good marker, like the Milwaukee markzall , you can easily see which ones need rotated or replaced. On my little planer (DW735) I use turtle wax with graphene. Car wax is perfect for metal surfaces. O’rileys was clearing it out for $5.27 per jar versus the original $32 as they were clearing it out. Lots of car products work fantastic

They actually have an index mark on one corner so you can keep track of what face you’re on.

@ I know, but the marker is easier to see and it doesn’t make contact with the wood, so it stays on. Just getting older and anything to help myself out

I like to use this wax ' Meguiar's G7014J Gold Class Carnauba Plus Premium Paste Wax' seems to hold up well.

6:15 when you are cutting the more manageable pieces, is there a reason why you didn’t just set up a stop block? I was wondering if you had to avoid sections that needed removal or something. I didn’t know if there was a safety issue like the radial arm saw kicking towards you or something (I have never personally used a radial arm saw myself)
@hillcustomlumber18 сағат бұрын
Yes you’re right, I was assessing each board and cutting around any bad knots/etc. when I cut them to final length at the end I used a stop block.

I'm curious why you butt glued the treads instead of using your shaper to make a glue edge? The second question is why you didn't just make one length about one inch longer than longest treads and allow trim carpenter to fit each tread as needed? Super nice work! Ray
@hillcustomlumber18 сағат бұрын
I butt glue everything, always have and never had an issue. As for length, I just make them to the specs given by the customer. I kept the 2 lengths because it actually helped with yield on the boards.

@@hillcustomlumber Thanks I respect your long experience I am a hobbyist and was curious as for me the glue joints are stronger if one has a shaper and keep joined wood boards aligned even when glue fails. I am an avid follower of your videos thankful for you taking the time to make them I have learned much. Ray

It's to late now but you could have found a shop with a abrasive planer, no tear out problem solved. The only thing left to do is nurse your damaged ego. Just like myself you probably have to do everything yourself. Well sometimes it's nice to let somebody else pump your gas.

I actually had someone lined up to plane them for me, but when I saw the planer for sale I knew it’d pay for itself in the long run.

@hillcustomlumber I must say I took great offense in your video claiming nobody had any good ideas about a substitute for Johnsons paste wax. We'll I'm the guy that suggested you try Bostik Easy Glide ! What didn't you like about my suggestion? 🤨

Don’t take offense! I filmed this video an hour after putting out that short, you hadn’t answered yet. I figured I’d mention it in this video to put it out to a broader audience.
