There an easier way of pouring the oil into the container. I use a metal Marinade Injector that I bought at The Home Depot for injecting flavor and moisture to your meats. This works great. No spills and I weigh out my containers exactly right!

Thank you very much. I was able to make a wonderful Arnica salve on my first try using your video as help. I would like to help you out a little bit with what you said as far as the beeswax pellets are concerned. As long as you dump them out of the bag and don't use a scoop or your hand to take them out, and as long as you don't touch the inside of the top of the bag at all, the pellets will not go rancid 😉 Thanks for the video!!

To break up a solid piece of beeswax, place the block on a microwave safe dish and put it in the microwave and heat until the block begins to soften. Once softened, take a sharp knife and cut the wax into one inch bars, and cut the bars into one inch chunks or smaller. Then, you can cut it further when you want to use it, weigh, then follow your salve recipe as usual. Store the leftover wax chunks in a container with a lid.

Beeswax doesn't go bad or rancid. It may develop a natural bloom but that can be buffed off or left on. It's harmless. Otherwise, this video was very helpful. :)

One critique, Weight and volume are not the same. One oz of feather by weight would be much more than 1 oz of feathers volumetrically.

What temperature do you have your heat level on? Is it to ha boil to melt?
@mountainroseherbs

Just hot enough to simmer the water below the double boiler. Definitely don't go for a rolling boil, or high heat. Gradually bring it up, and you'll begin to see the wax melting.

Salves are meant for nourishing and soothing skin, while adding moisture and any benefits from the added herbs. We recommend that you speak to a dermatologist or licensed herbalist before using herbs to treat or heal any specific symptoms. You can learn about finding herbalists near you, using this blog: blog.mountainroseherbs.com/find-an-herbalist

What temp do I add the essential oils in? Also can you make salves at 3% essential oil like if it’s a healing salve
@mountainroseherbs
@mountainroseherbs Жыл бұрын
Hi there Anastasia :) I usually add in my essential oils to body care products once I've taken them off the heat source and waited a little bit for the oils to begin cooling (or course not long enough that they begin to solidify) and then stir before pouring into my desired containers. As a company, we can only really recommend essential oil blends up to 2% dilution for general safety. I would recommend doing a small patch test on your body to see how you react to the 2% dilution and then go from there. Hope that helps! - Gracie

I love making oils. I hate cleaning up!
@MariaNoelGroves
@MariaNoelGroves 4 жыл бұрын
Haha! Me, too! But, what I find works well is to wipe everything down well with absorbent paper towels, THEN put them in the dishwasher or use very hot, very soapy water to wash (I don't *normally* use Dawn dish soap, but it IS more effective for oil and salve clean up). Since this is pretty wasteful, I keep slightly used (but not gross) paper towels in a jar to pull out for clean up. Rags from discarded towels or other absorbent material that you toss afterwards would work, too. Unfortunately, with re-usable cloths, you'll never get the oil out and will end up with nasty, rancid cloths over time.

I started making salves and sometimes the texture has gritty parts. Is the temperature at pouring. I don’t know what to do to prevent this
@mountainroseherbs
@mountainroseherbs 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! It's hard to tell exactly what is going on when we can't see the product. I'm guessing it's one of two things. 1) Maybe you need to use a more fine strainer/cheese cloth to strain out your herbs and you have a little bit of sediment that is remaining. Or, more likely, 2) some butters and oils harden and melt at different temperatures so you may need to store your salves in a different place or warm them gently in a pocket or with your hands before using. I've noticed this the most when using shea butter. It wants to be solid more than it wants to be nice and oily and I've found it helpful to warm it up slightly before I use whatever product it is incorporated in. Hope this helps! - Gracie

Do v not need to add preservatives in this salve ?
@kathypelot2187
@kathypelot2187 Жыл бұрын
No. The salve is anhydrous ( meaning it contains no water). Anhydrous formulas don't need preservatives unless they are used somewhere that they will come in contact with water like the shower ( in sugar scrubs). I would add some Vit E to help the oils not go rancid as quickly.

If I wanted to make 6 oz would I use 5 oz of infused oil and 1 oz beeswax
@mountainroseherbs
@mountainroseherbs 11 ай бұрын
Hi there! In this video, Maria suggested a 1:4 ratio for beeswax to infused oil so you may want to have slightly more beeswax. A good rule of thumb is this: A 1:3 wax-to-oil ratio will create a firm balm, a 1:4 ratio is great for a standard salve, and a 1:5 wax-to-oil ratio creates a soft, spreadable salve. I hope that helps!
