2:35 Funny story... When I was on the road moving cross-country, I had a tarp tied down in the back of a pickup truck, and I had read about every protocol, tied every Boy Scout knot, and dried up every ounce of knowledge I had about me, and the tarp still came loose three times. On the third emergency pullover, the other person got out in the worst rainstorm ever, and tied an abomination of dozens of simple overhand knots, on all four corners of the tarp, and it made it for the entire drive. Just goes to show you, you can plan everything right and roll a 1, or just Leeroy Jenkins it and manage to land a Nat 20.

@@ShugoAWay Nahh, the big bundles are crappy rope, but you can definitely get some decent paracord at Dollar tree. It's probably only like 50 feet, and I wouldn't trust it for climbing, but that's more than sufficient for this project.

The Roycroft pack gets better when you start with the tarp tied up like a drawstring purse (not necessarily a cord through the eyelets, but the shape like one). You then can tie the bunched up tarp part to the frames apex, and additionally fix the hanging purse part to the lower frame. To get a pack you can easily put down and pick up again, you'd use two shoulder straps (webbing or strips of cloth, hell, even pants legs would be more comfortable than cord) with a fixed loop that hooks on the lower tips of the frame. Whenever you want to put it down, you unhook the loops. Oriented after the Roman Furca, you can also add a long bar to the pack that goes over your shoulder, allowing you to put the load of your pack on the ground first, before taking it off (especially good for heavy loads). - A Bering pack might be worth a try too, it gives you a more closed package.

When I did my OA Ordeal, we used Horseshoes. You take a tarp and lay it out with your sleeping bag on top. Put one change of clothes and your toiletries inside the sleeping bag and then roll it all up. Once it’s all the way rolled, tie ropes around the tube and bend it into a horseshoe, with rope bridging the two ends. You now have a backpack you can sling over your shoulder or carry around your head.

Honestly the pant idea sounds amazing, especially if you have a belt you can put through the belt loops to make a much more secure tie, and along with that you could possibly tie the pant leg around the belt after its closed shut without needing any strings.

hehe Nice lashing Jason. They were really well done. That Clove hitch looked great. What would have helped, but been time consuming, is running a string through metal rings and made sure the entire tarp made like a satchel. Then lashed that onto the sticks. Still a fun concept of everything.

In boyscouts, we called them wraps and fraps. Really strong stuff for lashing together structures. We made a catapult with logs and rope only using lashing. It was awesome Edit: I don't mean like a dinky foot tall catapult, this was 30 feet tall

Little tip if you don't have a lot of paracord, and aren't putting the full 550lb of weight on it - you can pull the core out of the cord, and it gives you (depending on the type or paracord) 4-5 extra lengths of cordage you can use. Really good for projects like this, where you're using relatively short pieces to tie corners on a structure or frame.

When I was a tween, we made these in shop class. I used to live near an old building that was made out of a type of brick that was almost like a magnet for the "Chinese stars" as we wrongly called them. Every shot was a good shot that stuck right into that brick. I don't know what the material was, but we used to "karate chop" a pile of the unused bricks and they'd break, too, so they totally made us feel like Ninjas. We usually cut them into a simple 4 or 5 point star, and they worked great. Never thought about shooting balloons, but now I wish we had haha.

One note for your First Backpack: you would have wanted to wrap your first black cord around the base of your triangle a few times, as Murphy was jumping you could tell the tarp was sliding down and nothing but the horizontal wraps were keeping it up. Edit: at 15:30 the unsupported bottom decided it had enough. One way to do this is started by wrapping around the middle of the triangle a couple times, then on one side run it directly over the frame pole diagonally, to then draw it along the back of the tarp to the middle of the base of the frame over that pole along the belly of the pack back up to the middle of the other side, and doing this a few times weaving a thin 'V' holding the bottom of the backpack up. A note for your Pants Backpack: you will want to cinch the leg "straps" to the beltloops tighter than what you had on show, the paracord pulling on your shoulders with the weight of whatever you put in the pack will get quite painful real quickly! (for a similar example, if you have ever carried a gallon of milk in a plastic bag soon the plastic of the handles start cutting into your hands)

I've also heard of this as a Yukon Pack or a Hudson Bay Pack. either way best investment you could make is in an old ALICE pack frame and straps, tie up the tarp into a packet before attaching it to the frame.

I like it. Also you can use a long sleeve shirt or sweater for most this. The sleeve make an excelant set of "flappie doodles" and the mid-section will make a pocket. You can use water bottle strips for lashings as shawn by that awesome Russian guy.

Self Reliance Outfitters has a good video on this on their channel. Also it would be a diagonal lashing and look up the mark II square lashing. You should also run the rope from the top over the front of the shoulder and down to the cross stick and tie it in the front.

I already know how to make one of these. The Burlap Backpack can be crafted by dragging sticks onto an empty Burlap Courier Bag, thus creating this backpack. The resulting item can be broken down into materials once it's assembled but there is a chance that some of the materials will be destroyed. Easy AF

Yall should do a whole series of DayZ inspired crafting, such as fishing pole, stone knife, ghillie suit, walls, roofs, doors, windows, lockboxes/safes, bow and arrows, firearm suppressor made from water bottle and duct tape, fish trap made from water bottle, rain water collector, water distillery. There are a ton of cool craftables. Would be super dope, if you guys haven't played DayZ I highly recommend it, it's on xbox, playstation and pc.
