For the record the cooking method you'll get a cleaner more efficient and consistent burn. If you noticed the newspaper method left a lot of ash and would have an inconsistent burn rate. There are ways to make it better but melting it into a consistent mass is the most effective method. With that being said the water method works great for fuses.

"Cooking makes me nervous." About a year ago, I was mixing this up to make a sugar rocket engine, and I was cooking it, and a leaf landed on my stove (portable, propane fueled), and it caught fire and ignited the entire batch (500g, which is 5 times as much as you should do normally), and I picked up the pan to pull the leaf out, when I brought my face close to see into it, and it exploded 6 inches from my face. Luckily, I got out with minor burns, a couple marks on my skin, and I was fully blind for almost 15 seconds, and had trouble seeing for the next day or two. That was dumb.

Something similar happened to me when i was recreating an early 1900's black powder recipe. I was drying the mixture on a dying woodstove before pulverising it a second time, in winter when the relative humidity is around 12%. I measured the temp at 250 degrees and that was about 150 degree below the ignition temp so i thought i was well within the saftey limits. However, i was baking it on aluminium foil and a grain of sulphur that wasnt small enough and must have melted and reacted with the aluminium and set off the whole batch. I got some minor burns on my hand because i was stirring it at the time, but holy crap...thats why you do this sort of thing in SMALL batches.

Chemistry graduate here. There's basically 3 ways to mix these two (three) things: - Melt them together - Dissolve/precipitate them together - Dry powder mixture Melting gives a more consistent and efficient burn, without too much effort. This is why it's the go-to method for DIY model rockets. Dissolve/precipitation can technically give you the best mixture, but you also have to be careful how you boil of the solvent (like you can't just heat it until it boils off) which is often too much effort compared to the other two. The trick of this method is that it removes the solvent by pulling it into the paper, and the large surface area lets them evaporate. However the paper also makes it burn very ashy. Dry powder relies on having a very fine mixture. However the advantage here is that you can dope the mixture with other compounds (sulphur, aluminium, charcoal, etc) without much hassle. This is the oldest and most well understood method, but you really wanna be careful to not inhale any of it too

The caramelized version can give you a longer burn time. I made one caramel version in a tin can and it continuously bellowed smoke for almost 5 minutes. Completely made my whole street look like a war zone. We were all shocked by how long it kept going. I do like the speed of the paper style or the paraffin wax uncooked version is also a fine. Most recently (as in yesterday) I tested out a mineral oil instead of the wax, because I heard it was a good one. It was ok but it burned seriously hot with flame jeting up approximately two feet. I mean jeting up with no stutter. So it seems a bit too dangerous to consider it for fun but if the island is ever invaded I will be going that route. First time I have seen you guys. I'll definitely check out more of your stuff.

I have actually Just mixed the dry Potassium Nitrate and Sugar and left it as a powder, the burn is less controlled and less consistent that way but it is generally the same reaction, the big reason you don't want to do that is because the powder is getting exposed to heat with a greater surface area (creating the more uncontrolled burn) and is less efficient at making smoke and flames that way but is a pretty great flash powder for a fire.

The main reason you'd like to cook the original recipe is just to mold it into your "typical smoke bomb shape", not really for general smoke effectiveness. For instance: Put (non hardened, still warm) recipe into a small PVC pipe, then push a pen into the middle of it and leave it. This will leave a space (once dried and hardened) to where you can put a wick in there, and fill the remaining space with a cotton ball or something just to keep the fuse snug against the recipe. This might also make it easier to get colored smoke bombs, or at least more consistent ones. That's just my assumption, though. I know some people use some powdered dye from Hobby Lobby, or places like it. Hope that helps, great video as always guys.

I remember making smoke bombs out of saltpeter (potassium nitrate) and sugar 10 or so years ago. One thing to be cognizant of is that most brands of stump remover contain an anti-caking agent that I believe is silicon based, maybe silicon dioxide, but I can't recall exactly what it is. It doesn't cause any big problems but it does lower the potential of your reaction by some degree. If possible, just purchase "100% saltpeter" or "100% KNO3" from a chemical supplier or as a generic stump remover from a hardware supplier. I started out melting it all down into that brown paste too, but eventually I just got lazy and tried mixing the KNO3 and the sugar, dry, in tubes of paper and lighting that. As long as it was well blended it does work. A lot of waste on that method but if you need a LOT of smoke on very short notice, that's the way to go lol. This "impregnation" method you're using is the best, in terms of "preparation vs results." I was in my early 20's at the time, and I quit making smoke bombs after I made a really big one and then saw police cars roaming the nearby streets shortly thereafter. My neighbor's were NPC's and definitely not roguish at all. Also, DON'T BREATHE THAT SMOKE, GUYS. Jesus Christ lmao.

Just find the Anarchist Cookbook and do the stuff in there and then maybe make your own book The Modern Rogue cookbook I can give you ideas

Correct me if I'm wrong but the anarchist cookbook I know is full of bomb recipes right?

I blew myself up with the candy rocket/smoke bomb mixture once, had burns on my hands and face. Still got a gnarly scar on my left hand. Never cook over open flame! And always make sane amounts at a time!
