Clemson Extension Agent Jonathan Windham shows us how to cross-pollinate roses to create your very own hybrids with a process that takes about 10 steps and only a few minutes!
Here is a written guide to help you cross-pollinate your roses:
1. Select one plant to be the mother and one plant to be the father.
2. Collect anthers from the father plant and dry overnight to release pollen grains.
3. Select a flower bud on the mother plant. The sepals should be split enough to just see the color of the petals beneath.
4. Remove the sepals and petals from the flower bud.
5. Emasculate the flower bud by cutting away the stamens (the stamens are filaments + anthers. The filaments are the stalks that the anthers sit on).
6. Place pollen from the father plant onto the stigmas of the mother plant (the stigmas are in the center of the flower).
7. Label your cross using the formula mother name x father name (the mother plant always comes first when writing out lineages).
8. If the cross was successful, a hip will form.
Note: Pollination and fertilization are two separate events in plant breeding. Pollination just means pollen was applied to the stigmas, fertilization means that sperm and egg successfully united.
9. Harvest the hip when it’s ripe (it will be red, orange, or yellow) and remove the seeds.
10. Place seeds in a Ziploc bag with some slightly moist potting soil and store in fridge through the winter.
11. Plant seeds in spring and enjoy being surprised by your new rose hybrid!
Fun fact: The “seeds” that are in the hip of a rose are technically “achenes” and not seeds at all, but most people just describe them as seeds.
Special thanks to Jonathan Windham for doing this demonstration and helping in the making of this video!

Wow thanks for your vid. I kinda thought it would be like crossing hibiscus but not completely. I will say cross pollinating a Hibiscus is definitely easier. And now I understand why that technique didn't work for me in the past. Thanks for making this easy.

Can I still pollinate it with the stamens on? I like flowers with all the stamens and pistils on, or must I remove the stamens?
@PallasAthene12
@PallasAthene12 3 жыл бұрын
The stamens need to come off, or you risk that the plant receiving the pollen will self-pollinate instead of pollinate from the other flower you want to hybridise with.

I've given several attemps at this and the anthers will not give off any pollen. I've tried both before blooming and after. Is it possibly because of bad nutrients to the plant?

Some roses do not release pollen well or at all. Make sure the anthers are sufficiently dry, then place them in a small jar and crush them using the blunt end of an ink pen or something. Seal the jar and shake. Sometimes crushing the dried anthers yields more pollen.

What happens if you don't cut the hip and don't take out the seeds?
@SouthCarolinaETV
@SouthCarolinaETV 4 жыл бұрын
In order for rose seeds to germinate, they require moisture and a period of cold storage referred to as “stratification”. If left inside the hips, the seeds will not receive adequate moisture and they will most likely fail to germinate when removed.

Yes, you can harvest pollen from cut roses, however, many times the anthers are damaged by the refrigeration that the florist roses are subjected to.

Store seeds in moist media (sand or potting soil) in cold storage for a least three months. Afterwards plant the seeds in containers outdoors, avoid planting the seeds deeper than 1 inch. Water after planting and about every two days afterwards. Seeds from some varieties germinate better than others. Seeds of wild roses can take 2 years before they will germinate.

How can you tell if the plant is male or female?
@PallasAthene12
@PallasAthene12 3 жыл бұрын
Roses are self-pollinating, so have both male and female parts in their blooms. It's not like with certain trees where one is a female or male. That's why you need to separate the male and female parts of the flower when hybridising.

How much time did this process take?
@SouthCarolinaETV
@SouthCarolinaETV 4 жыл бұрын
The time from initial cross pollination to seed harvest will vary by variety, but typically it takes around 2-3 months for hips to ripen. Afterwards seeds will need to be stored in moist, cold storage (“stratification”) for another 3 months. Seeds are ready to plant after stratification. Harvest hips in the fall, store them during the winter, and then plant them in early spring.

Will roses cross pollinate naturally?
@fishby8070
@fishby8070 5 жыл бұрын
they can be cross pollinated by pollinators but roses have both male and female organs so they're much more likely to self pollinate. I'm trying to make a Lycium chinense x ruthenicum hybrid and a barbarum x ruthenicum hybrid this year with my wolfberries.
@SouthCarolinaETV

Yes! Insects are largely responsible for pollinating roses and they often cross pollinate varieties inadvertently when visiting different blooms. Since roses are self-fertile, there is typically a higher ratio of “selfed” seedlings compared to true hybrids between different varieties

Hello, can I use an open flower already, or it should be a close one? thank you
@SouthCarolinaETV
@SouthCarolinaETV 4 жыл бұрын
Blossoms that have already opened can be cross-pollinated, however, it is recommended to select flowers which have not yet opened. Roses are capable of self-pollination meaning pollen from a blossom can pollinate and subsequently fertilize that same blossom. By selecting and emasculating a flower that has yet to open, you can greatly reduce the likelihood that any seedlings you obtain will be true hybrids between the desired parents and not just products of self-fertilization.
