Some of the characters are (incredibly loosely) based on real people, but the show is really about the drive to find one's meaning and purpose in life.

Poorly done?? POORLY DONE??? Ben Vereen was BRILLIANT as the Leading Player, largely because the part was actually created around him and specifically for him (and his portrayal is the one against which all others are judged). Based on what I've read, the role of the Leading Player was initially not as strong when Vereen was first cast but Fosse decided to make it stronger over time in order to leverage Vereen's talents.
