The Last Homely House

Tis the season of COLDS and FLU and I talked about making Master Tonic or Fire Cider weeks ago but never did. Silly me. Here I am making it now, but it won't be ready until about February. Still, I'm thinking ahead. And next winter, I won't be without it!
Here is the link to the garlic broth my son swear by. It tasted ok

...for growing ginger and turmeric, just put the pieces of root in the ground under about 2" of soil! They make nice bushes!! They even flower a bit! Stick a piece with a bend in it, in the ground and you will be surprised!

Hopefully just breathing some of the “fumes” from all the chopping will clear you up a little. Chili does that for me. Never heard of Fire Cider before. Interesting. My mother learned a cough remedy from her Swedish grandmother: Slice a large onion very thinly, separate rings onto rimmed plate; sprinkle sugar on top of layers and let sit a bit lightly covered in warm-ish place (we use top of frig). The syrup that develops really does knock out a cough and, surprisingly, it doesn’t taste bad. Win win. Be well, dear Kate.

Hello Kate, hopefully one of your magic remedies will help. I only know elderberry syrup. But this year I did not have any, because the extreme dryness dried up the elderberries. I have never heard of your Fire Cider. He sounds very interesting. We can buy horseradish, but I have never seen turmeric. With me in the area there is only one big Turkish shop that has no turmeric. I think you have more luck with him in the Indian shops. My grandmother made radish cough syrup: cut off a thick, black radish at the top, hollow out about a third of the flesh with a spoon or a knife from above. Now pierce through the pulp of the radish about five times through the ground with a long needle put put the rasish in a small bowl or place on a glass. Then fill the radish up to the top with brown sugar candy and add a tablespoon of honey on top. Then put the cut cap of the radish back on top. From the flesh of the radish is now, in conjunction with the sugar and honey, the cough syrup, which drips through the previously inserted holes into the vessel. After just a few hours, so much cough syrup has already developed, so that you can already take the first ration. When the sugar in the pulp is completely dissolved after about two to three days, the knife can be used to scrape off the pulp again and refill it with sugar and honey . This process can be repeated until there is no pulp left. Big hug and get well soon Claudia

I grow ginger and turmeric and both are very easy to grow, although they take months and months. Simply cut a nob/finger off of a piece and allow the ends to dry, then plant in a rich loam soil, keep moist and within six months you should have a nice amount to harvest. Daily I cook with fresh ginger as well as garlic and onions, so my body has a daily dose of each of these nutrient rich foods. Now I want to try your tonic recipe. To remove onion smells from my hands I simply wash my hands holding something that is stainless steel. Odd I know, but it works.

I have systemic lupus so I stay away from people. But if I do get a little run down, it's a day of chicken soup, orange juice, white grape juice and a cold and flu capsule from Walgreens. And cups of hot tea to keep the congestion away...I also have congestive heart failure so I have an inhaler too. Your tonic looks wicked.

I want make some of that tonic, is it as good as people say it is...? I had been looking a a lot of different video's on YT to see how it's done. I was going to mention it in one of your video's and now I wished I had, oh well, better late than never as they say, right? Kat you use the apple cider vinegar with the Mother in it, the one used is a cloudy liquid with the stuff on the bottom. This delightful concoction will get your blood warmed and flowing! Good stuff I thought I'd share with you. Here's the recipe: 1 Quart Mason Jar with plastic lid 1 - large onion (I like the Spanish Onions) 1 - 5" piece of Horseradish Root finely diced 1 - 4" piece of peeled & finely diced Ginger Root 6 - peeled and finely diced Cloves of Garlic 1/2 to 1 teaspoon dried Capsaicin or Cayenne Pepper (From Louisiana is best) Juice of 1 Lemon (Organic Preferably) 1 bottle of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with The Mother in it. Place all finely diced ingredients into the mason jar, add the cayenne pepper to taste, pour the apple cider vinegar over the ingredients, put the lid on and shake to mix. Let this sit on your counter for the next 4-8 weeks, shaking it everyday. Once the mixture has set for the 4-8 weeks, I strain it through a double layer of cheese cloth twice to remove any debris. I want the final product to be free of any solids. Honey can be added after straining but this is optional. 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup Honey to be added after above ingredients have time to meld for 4 weeks. Please Note: This information is provided for educational purposes only. I am not giving medical advice, medical treatment or medical care to or for anyone. Before using or taking anything, one should consult with their own health care professional. I make no warranty, claim or guarantee as to the effectiveness of any treatment described or found herein. ********* Lemon Tonic:- 1 Peeled Lemon, 2 inch piece of Ginger, 2 inch piece of Tumeric, 1/4 tspn of Caynnene pepper. Blend first 3 ingredients, then strain into a jar, add the caynnene, and shake and it's ready to take, by the spoonful either daily or every other day. ******** Lemon Health Tonic Delicious vegan food made with 100% Pure Love :-) The exclusive organic catering service for the discerning palate. ONLY 5 SIMPLE INGREDIENTS: 1) Start with 16oz purified water (room temperature) then add 2) 1 lemon (peeled but leave the pith on) 3) A little piece of ginger (thumb sized & leave the skin on) Blend for 20 seconds, then add: 4) 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder 5) 1/4 teaspoon cayenne powder (If you can't really tolerate spicy tasting things, you might wish to use 1/8 teaspoon the first few times when you make this.) I also came across garlic and honey, just peel garlic and put into a small jar and fill with local honey. Have also heard of :- Garlic Cloves and honey covered in a jar for a winter remedy, set aside to ferment and take a teaspoonful daily to boost the immune system. And also Onions chopped up into a jar with honey just to cover and let ferment as above recipe. NOTE:- I think it would be a good idea if you take any of these, to start out at a 1 teaspoonful, then graduate up to a 1 tablespoonful, then go to a short glass, as it may upset your tummy and give you either gas or diarrhea, and you don't want that right........So be mindful starting out with it. PLEASE NOTE: I am not giving medical advice here as I am no medical person, just a common sense to be mindful of how much you take at the start of this, and consult you medical Doctor.

I know this may sound a wee bit dumb but how do you drink it if it is a vinegar? Do you add it to something and how much would you drink per day? Sounds great. Fortunately, I rarely get a cold and it was 21 years ago I had the flu with a chest infection, but that doesn't mean I am lax in looking after myself to avoid colds/flu. this does sound like a good idea.

@tracybromage-spencer1882 you can drink 1-2 ounces straight, a lot of people like to add a bit of honey to it and or a cup of tea, you can add lemon to it also.

Kate, I just happened to watch your third installment of the book you're reading prior to this video. I left a message about hoping you weren't feeling poorly & then watched this. So my message is backwards. (like me at times lol) Just be careful if you take extra zinc. It has a tendency to cause an upset stomach if taking too much. I know alot of people who drink organic apple cider vinegar. I simply cannot. Tried multiple times. Not fond of vinegar by itself. My organic apple vinegar is cloudy. I'd rather use vinegar as a cleaning agent haha. Would horseradish in a jar work? I don't know if it would be as effective. How do you drink the Tonic after the allotted period of time? Do you add MORE apple cider vinegar when the mixture runs low or do you just start over with new ingredients? Never used this tonic before. Do feel better my friend in Northumberland ! Get some extra rest. 🌷🌻🌹💐 P.S. My comment regarding the horseradish in a jar was meant as an alternative to the bigger piece. Do you use a Neti Pot? It CAN decrease the time when you do have a head cold.

The fire cider will be ready in a few weeks - I'll take a shot glass every morning - I'm looking forward to it! I had to google 'neti pot' nooooo! I've never used one! it looks crazy! but I can see why some folk would like it - I'm happy with my healthy drinks! Zinc supplement on order! thank you xxx

Kate - As Kathy noted below you can grow your own turmeric but you can also grow ginger. I would assume your best bet for growing ginger or turmeric would be in a pot. Here's a link for growing ginger: www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/herbs/ginger/growing-ginger.htm Found a link for growing turmeric: balconygardenweb.com/growing-turmeric-in-pots-how-to-grow-turmeric-care-uses-benefits/ Hope you get to feeling better!

I just realized when I read the title of this that you had forgotten to make it since you said last year that you were going to make it. Bugger that it is not something that can be used as quickly as it's made. Can you not use the horseradish that comes in the bottle, there is nothing else in there but water? Going to watch the video now. xx Angela
