Changed the touchscreen 3 days ago. Cracked it the most stupid way yesterday - was going up the stairs, tripped a bit, and grabbed the railing with my hand to keep balance. Too bad my phone was in that hand.

I see many self-repair materials are one-time use only, as in if that part breaks again, then it don't self-repair again. Maybe better materials will emerge in the future, but for now, "lasting forever" is only a dream. Maybe it'll last 300 years, but that's still not "forever".

But it can heal numerous times just not the in the exact same place. But we can't either. Our bones can only heal so well and so often before things get screwy. If that works well enough to keep us operating for many decades of continuous use...
@Lttlemoi

The car tires still wear out like regular old tires. This self healing doesn't stop this because tire wear is quite literally due to the road slowly grinding away the rubber, not cutting it into pieces, which is what the self-healing rubber heals.

Can you imagine how many tons of rubber we would eliminate from the environment if we use the self healing rubber for car tires? It would pretty much eliminate the need to get new ones if it broke, so we could just roll into the shop to get it fixed, rather than replaced. Tire burning, gone. Tires on the side of the road, gone. What a great concept.

The military has been using this type of technology, for example in self-healing fuel tanks on aircraft, for decades. It would be good to see more of this in civilian applications. Self-healing oil, fuel, radiator, and hydraulic lines would be nice to have in your car.

Is this basically similar to the concept of shape memory alloys that are stimulated to form different shapes via differences in heat, except with the areas of stimulation being the loci of repair and damage? That's amazing if so, because we can start covering all of our bases with materials now.

speaking as someone who lives in Florida, I've had to throw out more tires due to cracks in the sidewall from weather exposure than I had to do for tread ware. If self healing tires with healing agent could cost less than two sets of tires it would be worth it for me.

I'm pretty sure you're not actually breaking the bonds of the rubber when you cut it. You're just pulling the long, stringy molecules away from each other. So, in theory, all you would need is a compound that slowly kept reacting with itself over time so that when the molecules were pulled apart, new bonds would form and connect the two pieces together.
@DaftBunny
@DaftBunny 7 жыл бұрын
Some comments; First, these materials do not last 'indefinitely'. The repair does not continue to be perfect unfortunately :) In the case of using healing agent, it will eventually run out. Second, there are many more methods other than ionic bonds and using healing agents to self-heal materials. It is worth mentioning that this is just a very small selection of the cool stuff that is being developed :D Thirdly, rubbers and plastics are all polymers. 'Polymer' is the family name for many, many materials. Just to clarify these things, not to criticize. It's nice to see the field getting some attention! If you have any questions feel free to ask, I research self-healing rubbers.

That would be kinda neat. I drop my iPhone and the screen breaks, but then after awhile the screen heals itself. I think a lot of iPhone owners would love this. However Android doesn't really need this, as you can drop those things over 600x before the screen breaks for the first time. I think this would be awesome. If it ever becomes widespread, it'll change everything.
