I don't use Spotify, but I realise its value as an advertising tool. Being in a band, most of the income we earn is from shirts and physical media. If people find out about us, or want to hear us before committing their money using Spotify or KZbin then that's great. We get no money from streams, but I think it's worthwhile overall paying for the service that gets our music on all the main streaming platforms. I find that if I'm on a train or at a festival talking to a stranger about being in a band, one of the first things they will ask is "are you on Spotify?". Unless you're pitching yourself as a super niche and deliberately hard to find underground band, being able to say "yes" gives an impression of legitimacy. Apparently there are curated playlists and if you can get on to those then you can hugely increase the number of ears that are exposed to your music. Personally, I prefer to buy physical media and, ideally, have a download code with that so I can put it on my computer/phone. It means my access to music is a lot less than a Spotify user, but I also don't need an internet connection and a company cannot decide that my vinyl is "no longer available" for whatever reason.

Fully agreed, and saying this both as a listener and a musician myself.

I buy CDs and rip the files to my PC and then transfer them to my phone... no data required, plus you have lossless files that way@@necro.daemoness666

There are ways to rip your physical collection onto your mobile device, for on the go listening. Just saying, there are options, hahah!

There are and I have done too, back in the days. Now it just seems like a waste of time tho.

I have no respect for people who use spotify
@RautaMetal5 күн бұрын
Does that apply to KZbin, Apple Music etc then too? Because if should. For example, KZbin pays less royalties to artists than Spotify according to stats. Like said, I use spotify on the go and if that means I lost your respect, so be it!

most of the best black metal isn’t even on spotify

I wouldn't say most since pretty much bands like Darkthrone, Dissection etc are on there but sure: bands like Clandestine Blaze, for instance, is missing.

Fuck Spotify. The physical format is the best by far, but streaming is extremely convenient. Luckily, there are other platforms than Spotify that pay higher royalties, like Tidal.

I would most likely use Tidal or Apple Music, but Spotify is free for me.

I do buy CDs and LPs and also use Spotify. Its convenient, allows me to discover new music (some of which I buy) and it allows me to have a good part of my record collection available everywhere. Bands are free to avoid streaming services if they are not happy with the compensation. If you feel your employer if abusing you, you quit and get another job. Same goes with whoever makes your music available to the public.
