you'll probably never make bread again but if you do (or to anybody else making this) here's some tips 1: that bread was *very* underkneaded and probably underproved as well, typically you should knead until the entire mass is more or less the same texture and there's no unincorporated flour left 2: typically you shouldn't slice bread that's fresh out of the oven, that's why the inside of it was still wet/yeasty smelling (or as you described it "wet socks") 3: scoring the bread (or as you called it "decorative slices") isn't just for decoration, it both helps the bread cook evenly and gives it more room to expand. you need to score much deeper, or it doesn't really do anything, which is probably part of why the bread was so dense 4: I'm not 100% sure about this one, but that bread looked like it was cooked on too high of a temp for not enough time, which is why the outside was a little burnt but the inside was still a bit doughy. That could partially be due to the scoring, and assuming you followed the instructions in the book I can't imagine those were wrong unless your oven has problems 5: please do not use milk fresh from the udder for this i beg you Honestly, not the worst first attempt for bread I've ever seen, especially from someone that doesn't seem to know much of anything about baking
