That being said I do think that driving straight piped stuff at night is rude and you shouldn't do it. Anyway revs/pops/bangs around horses very easily could get somebody hurt. Even well trained horses can sometimes freak out when they get surprised by a SUDDEN loud noise.

Tom...please go to some junkyards or scour marketplace and find a roller cam 351w for that bish. Then do at least some GT40/GT40P heads or cheap aluminum if you can find something, cam+springs, base or adaptor for the blower and hammer on that for a while. Should be much stronger than that 289 and might not have train blowby. Scat sells 408 stroker kits for like $1382 for a 351w but, I am sure the machine work and assembly might be a huge pain and you wouldn't see much benefit from the CIs without some really good heads, big displacement with baby heads would just gove you a bunch if TQ and a lower peak HP. With the right bottom end, heads and cam 500-600hp is totally possible n/a from a 9.5" Windsor. I wish I didn't live all the way in Tennessee. I have a roller 393w with AFR heads and a stock roller 351w from a '97 F250HD manual transmission that got wrecked and ran incredible before that unfortunate event in my front yard...along with an LQ4 and an LS1 shortblock...I'd cut you a deal...you'd have to wait until I am back home after the holidays in Jan.

I had a mildly built 302 with 150 shot ran pretty good ended up putting a built 351w in the car and it felt just as fast without nitrous so ended up putting 100 shot on that engine ran a 11.85 at 120mph with street tires so I always have to recommend to my fellow small block Ford buddy's to ditching the 302's and go faster for the same budget price.

Yes, a roller cam 351w is the move. Especially if boost is in the equation, the blocks are much stronger, they don't have the tendency of splitting in half like a later 302, the early 289 blocks are actually pretty strong but the low deck limits the ci potential to maybe 353ci @ 0.060" over with a 3.4" crank...and you can make a cheap 393-434ci stroker with a 351w @0.030" over with a 3.85"-4.25" crank.
