Its refreshing to see the technical aspects and problem solving techniques you guys are using. There is so much garbage content out there where the projects are DRAGGING ass and just small bits of the engineering aspect are shown, if at all. The bulk is just explained, which is fine for most probably, but I enjoy seeing the process myself. I'm fascinated with WHY and HOW things are done. Maybe I'm just an asshole but a lot of channels bore me lately, but I've found hope with your channel so far and it's nice to actually be anticipating the next vids. Bravo gentlemen

Phil maybe instead of altering the hub carrier, and adding fairly large spacers. What about raising the power steering rack or remounting it above the existing mounting position? It’ll be a lot less work than changing the hub carriers don’t you think? Obviously you will need to change your steering column UJ’s and shaft but I’m sure you will figure something out. You’re also not going to stress the bottom of the hub carrier under hard cornering, or loading the spacer excessively? You also don’t have to redesign the hub carriers, saving time and money on modelling and stress testing. Another benefit of moving the rack, would be that you would be able to replace a hub carrier with an OEM one if you ever needed to. Looks really really good so far though guys! Thanks, Sam.
@chrisg4rr377

Space was the issue if i recall. There was literally zero space for the rack to go
@driftworks
@driftworks 4 жыл бұрын
The upper & lower suspension mounts also need moving up the same amount (80mm). You can't just move the rack. We discussed the idea of moving them all in the last episode & decided against it.

Good stuff! Are you sure that your top and bottom A-arm are supposed to be an equal zero degrees though? Typically, the top one is at an angle (up, from the frame) when the lower is at zero degrees. Rule of thumb is having the inboard side about 1 inch lower than the outboard side. I am sure you've checked the OEM angles though... ;-) Keep coming these vids. Love them!
@driftworks
@driftworks 4 жыл бұрын
The arms aren't horizontal, the gauge is just zeroed. I'm just matching what it was (or close ish). The best thing is I have adjustability if I need to fine tune it, but it seems to camber gain fine with the just the shorted upper arm.

Nice work, is there any concern with loading the threaded rod end on the upright side in bending? I thought that was always something to avoid?
@driftworks

Thanks. They are large high quality rod ends without turnbuckles, so I don't expect to see any issues. I'll be keeping a close eye on everything I've done in the first few test sessions though.

@driftworks

I'm not sure what you're saying. Can you explain? We design & sell thousands of suspension arms using rod ends smaller than these.
@Xboxthreesixtyful
@Xboxthreesixtyful 4 жыл бұрын
@@driftworks ahh is it, maybe an over reaction from myself then. I remember being told in suspension design to avoid loading rod ends in shear, as they're only meant to transfer load axially. Braking puts a huge shear load on upper and lower rod ends on the upright in this set up. And bumps will load the lower rod end in bending. Pressed spherical bearings transfer the force to the wishbones much better. But at a loss of adjustability. From what you're saying I guess if you just use big enough rod ends then its fine.

@driftworks

The only metal that's been removed & not replaced is the door hinge mount & supporting frame for ancillary parts behind the bumper, so nothing structural. The next episode I'll show what we've had to do with chassis though. It got a bit out of control.
