Man the concepts in this are applicable to so many different types of builds. I love to see how useful the alginate molds have been, they seem like a good place to start as someone with little mold making experience

I'm working on a dreamscape/Dali inspired board at the moment, and alginate has been perfect for moulding my daughter's hands and fingers for some extra creepy rocks etc. I just need to find a way to get paint to stick to casting resin now.

What absolutely blows my mind with these videos is how willing this guy is to show us his mistakes and when things go wrong, which makes the moments where it works even more awesome to appreciate. Between this and the mould your own models video, I feel for the first time that I could actually follow through the advice given on a youtube video and make something simmilar to what I have seen in said video. Long story short, I've now subscribed as a result. Keep going you wonderful mad lad!

A few process tips from someone who's worked this angle: Alginate is really annoying in heat. Better is gelatin with PVA glue, which I got from a cosplay forum. It's pretty strong, and while it can be a little sticky in details, it holds its general shape well. I think I used about 25% PVA glue? Silicone sealant from the tube mixed with naphtha is probably the best budget option, but there are some issues. First is that the mold will shrink (I got about 1/3 shinkage from a pourable mix), and maybe warp some. The second is that it stinks terribly while the naphtha is outgassing. The third is that it all takes a long time - maybe 2 weeks. But it makes nice and durable molds for a bargain price. Love the prepainting of molds, will have to try that.

Hey, just wanted to say that I really appreciate these videos showing your experiments with casting things. Seeing you getting so much use out of alginate made me realize how approachable molding and casting *can* be, especially when I realized that one of my friends has a bunch left over from a failed project that she desperately wants to be rid of! I bought one of your nurgle toads several years ago intending to learn how to mold and recast minis, but between life and school I haven't been able to find the time or money to learn how to do things "properly". Your recent videos have A) shown me other, more-approachable (to me) ways to start making stuff, and B) served as a way for me to already start building a sense of what might and might not work, saving some effort and avoiding hiccups that might have derailed me. I will most likely be picking up my friend's leftover mold-making materials today, and your videos have been the spark I needed!

I am so glad you've broken me off the thought process "just print it all". The moldmaking and casting is so cool and there are so many interesting things that it can add to your toolbox! Like those freaking pipes! They came out close to perfect imo! I've seen crunpled pipes that size before and they fit very well

Dampen (dip in water, squeeze out excess) a couple of sheets of paper towel and cover the alginate mould, to keep it from drying. You could even put the mould and the damp paper towels into a gallon size zip loc bag.

oh and another idea that may or may not be useful to you, but you could consider painting resin onto the solid pieces so that it looks like its dripping and melting. I find that this clogs a lot of detail if youre not careful but it can look pretty cool with a lot of layers!

This looks amazing, iam a huge fan of the crusty beaten up industrial look, and taking advantage of the flaws of moldmaking to get that look is honestly genius... i honestly had some doubts at first with the pipes until i saw the first of those floor tiles and then it just all clicked that this was gunna get very good. i also love the prefab walls with room predesigned for greeblies, that is a very good idea.

One can totally print molds for molds, i designed negative of a two part mold with built in registration, sprue between parts and pour/air gates. I did so in resin, just takes a couple of coats of varnish to make sure the silicone stays separate from the resin so it will set without getting the expensive kind. Then just pour in the silicone, wait for it to set and out one pulls the two sides of a mold that will match up perfectly without all the hassle of making a mold box, ive been told its called "match plates". It might not suit your style as its good for making lots of the same mold but if its for a part(s) you want to be casting many of it can let one make many molds quickly.

Awesome. This is such an old school Miscast video! Something to try with FDM prints for big panels - the first layer you print is usually the smoothest, and can pick up texture from the print bed. You can use that to your advantage by printing face-down. Requires some design forethought, but I bet it could work for Necromunda terrain. Good luck, looking forward to the next one!

i would recommend gelatin molding. basically buy some glycerin from the drug store and reg everyday gelatin, makes a reusable mold agent (heat it in the microwave to liquify it, pour it, stick it in the fridge and... bingo mold) then you use acrylic resin. it's "cold curing" as opposed to the urethane resins that are hot. or give off a lot of heat. ...nail art. or hobby jewelry making kits sell the acrylic resin. can get it cheap. Is a great medium to do much cheaper casting.
