My grandfather who has been gone since 1993 who i learned a lot from use to have a lathe in his basement and he would make many things on it. He was into making small pieces for his miniature steam engines. In fact overtime he had 2 machines in there. He could just about make everything and fix it. So i enjoyed watching this video of you making those punches.

Machining a third step above the bearing step can aid in setting the bearing/bushing to the same required depth each time. The nice thing about using old shafts to make drivers is that a lot of the machining is already done for you. Cutting off bolt heads and using the threaded shafts as alignment pins can aid in assembly when trying to keep gaskets aligned and silicone from smearing. Sanding the outer diameter of old bearing races until they just drop into the housing can help in determining endplay/preload shim requirements before pressing the new race into place. That lathe is a definite game changer. Nice work!

Now that’s how to repurpose old shafts. Purpose built tools are always timesavers. I would harden and temper them to make them more durable.

a very good and most importantly cheap way to make a striker for such bearings. These bearings in the HK housing are quite heavy to drive in with a hammer alone and can still be damaged. quick and cheap to make a useful gadget. Regards
