We’re making new pins to go in an earthmoving machine! These are linkage pins for the queen post on a Caterpillar 657 Scraper Tractor. We show the step-by-step process of making the new pins. First, we start with all the lathe work and machining the induction hardened chrome rod. One of the pins also needs deep hole drilling and tapping for the grease holes before using the milling machine to drill through holes for the grease channel. Then we weld on the plates before installing the spacer rings. We finish up the job by stamping in the part numbers and painting the plates.
In this video we are using:
- Hafco TM-26120G Centre Lathe
- Hafco BM-63VE Milling machine
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

Yes, Curtis is good, but he's not a "rarity" like you make him out to be. There are thousands of machinist in Australia who can do everything you see Curtis doing just as well. You just don't see them. And this job he just showed you is not difficult at all. He makes it look "easy" because it pretty much is. At least on the scale of complexity. What sets Curtis apart is his drive and work ethics. He is fearless attempting large projects that many would balk at. Like tearing into his carry deck crane project. Many, including me, would have never attempted that. He doesn't take shortcuts or cheat. He does things right.

I don’t think Kurtis would want anything but his own brand of perfection, he remains consistent and that gives him an edge. Can’t let standards go or pins don’t fit holes hydraulic pistons and barrels blow and he loses business as a result. He doesn’t even have to try to get it perfect because it’s his standard! He wouldn’t do it any other way.👍😎

Better than factory parts for a lot less, whats not to like for your clients. If you have someone who can cut the pieces you need for whatever size you need, as long as you trust them and you know they're going to supply what you need and when youneed it why not. As an addition to saving you time and therefore money, its supports the local engineering supply chain and like you say you don't have to worry about the waste. 👍

Interesting post, using brass with the pin definitely denotes the weak link. The forces on that pin must quite phenomenal. Good to see Homey getting into the Christmas spirit. I guess you guys don't put your presents under the tree anymore, if you have a tree. Our cats used to hide in the tree, and the dogs, do what dogs do under the tree. Sadly yesterday afternoon we had to take one of the dogs for the eternal sleep, due to stomach cancer. We rescued him, Snoop, from a Croatian kennel where fighting dogs were trained and they used young dogs as bait. Snoop was 8 weeks old when we got him and even at that age he was scarred from bites, blind in his left eye with stitches on eyelid. He was a talker, mostly moaning, a typical Victor Meldrew. Great post, and great cinematography, Karen. Great engineering content Kurtis, be safe and well 👍

Just one more operation- when your drill breaks through to the center hole it usually leaves a small burr- that can come loose and be forced into the lubrication channel by the grease pressure. I would run the extension drill or a proper sized reamer down the hole to break that burr.

I remember using something called "portable dot peen marker machine" to mark welded sub-assemblies for very large constructions projects a few years back, it basically has a carbide tip that is punching dozens of dots in line to draw characters you need. It required a plug (220V here in Europe) and an air compressor connection and you are good to go, the characters where clearly visible after hot galvanizing the whole assemblies. I'm guessing those machines aren't exactly cheap, but if you need something that can do a lot of marking of different components on the fly then it might be worth looking in to. The one we ran was made by Pannier i think, and the best thing was that you could save dozens of templates for quick selection if you have recurring codes.

Great work on them pins! Look better then oem. Great work on filming and editing. Kinda dig that split screen of same operation from two views! My coolant pump is running low too but I don't want to fill it with the holiday coming it will get changed out in the new year. Keep up the great work. Cheers from Wisconsin!

If I may: You folks are a lot like a fine WinERY! Not only do you produce exemplary & high quality content each week, your presentation(s) are amazing. Kurtis you provide such an intuitive & knowledgeable, but most of all, PROFESSIONAL insight, and they improve with time! Truly impressive. Second, do any of your clients get to see what you do for them? I'm sure their Employees would appreciate seeing your work & effort as well. Just a thought...'cuz you're already conquering the World, a few more local Subs would be nice too, Huh? BTW, Karen we're all waiting for sure for some editing tips.

Thanks for the vid - countdown to xmas begins now 😁 (won't be here next Fri as will be driving ~900 Km across France at the time the vid drops). The accuracy you get from the 3 jaw chuck is impressive. With that much bar stick out it was pretty much bang on before you even started tapping it in 👍 Have a great holiday season. All the best, Paul

working in construction for more than 50 years and I never paid much attention to all the big yellow iron scraping and digging amd backfilling and compacting until I started watching your channel. now Im looking for leaky cylinders and scoring on rods and its not even my job. Im supposed to be inspecting the work not the equipment doing the work. Lol. cheers to another year gone by and Merry Christmas and Happy new year.

Kurtis and Karen, great to see you again. It is all snowy white up here and not too cold. Just -3C today. Kind of overcast but nice. Oh how many of pins like there I have made over the years. When you have 5 full logging shows to tend o they got to be a few ones I would keep in stock. 4140 case hardened just like these. I normally kept a 20 foot length of it in the abrasive wheel cutting rack. I was once inquired upon by our company comptroller if I knew how much the length cost I just said nope and then he asked if I cared and I said nope, LOL. In order to get him off my back I gave him a breakdown of what buying the same lengths was if purchased individually and he never enquired to me again, LOL. Oh how I miss that job. I never had the luxury of ceramic tooling to get under that hard casting so many a carbide met the trash can. Cross drilling with just regular high speed drills was another story for sure. Thanks a bunch for the walk down memory lane my FRIENDS. All the best to you both and yer banana loving pooch, LOL. Right down to the last moment is a perfect post my friends. That stamping thing is my best enemy. When stamping my silver I am renowned for poor stamping. Kind of a clame to fame eh. See you next week my dear FRIENDS.

We use a laser for part numbers (small parts). But there are also number engraving tools which you can program, they work electrical or pneumatic. Maybe that is an option for you?

I can see an exciting episode coming up with those methods you mention, can’t wait. It’s really interesting that with all the modern machinery punching codes onto steel with a hammer must be 500 years old and has barely changed.

+1 for the laser engraver. On the rare occasion I need one in my woodshop I borrow my mates portable unit. And another mate is currently looking at the 20W Handheld laser from OzRobotics for his fab shop. A pricey option but worth it for him

Reaching nearly 1 million subscribers is absolutely mind-blowing, and it wouldn't be possible without viewers like you taking the time to tune in and share the channel with others. Hearing that the channel's getting love all the way across the pond in America and from other engineering channels makes it pretty bloody awesome. We hope your Christmas is a good one too mate!

A new CEE video is the best part of my Friday mornings. I don't how many different part numbers you need to stamp, but it might be worthwhile to make/buy fixed stamps for the most common ones, and then use the holder for the less frequent ones.
