Just made some pillows for my mother's rocking chair. Cutting for zipper placement was a bit confusing for me but figured it out. Will never use another pattern again. Especially liked your hint for easily getting the covers over the foam. The first one was a little tricky so for the second one I used fold-back clips to hold the silk film in place around the vacuum hose. Worked like a charm. Great video!

I bought a large white trunk to store my infant niece’s stuff in kzbin.infoUgkxNuLbiXpLQ-mKH5NlyjrNe88hiCk2N3Cg , as she comes to my house frequently. For now, it’s toys on one side and diapers, wipes, and other baby care items on the other. As she gets older, it will be all toys. I had originally wanted a trunk with a hinged lid, but I was afraid of her smashing or pinching her fingers in it. This will be a much safer option. The lid has great padding in it and it is actually nice to sit on. It feels very sturdy and secure. Looks like it can be wiped clean easily. If it gets abused by her, I won’t be terribly upset because I paid less than $50 for it on Prime Day.

Hi Eric, great video. THANKS! You and I sat with my sewing machine in front of my computer for over 4 days making two 30 minute Box Corner Cushions. LOL I could have never been able to do it without you. I worked for an upholsterer in the 70s reupholstering Japanese cruise ship Bar stools and Dining room chairs in Ft Lauderdale Harbor. We did furniture and autos. I did everything except sewing. The owners wife was an awesome seamstress. I spent two days prior getting my machine to sew. That was not easy. It had sat for many years. Any way you and I did it together. I'm thinking as long as we are quarantined I'm going to build a patio chair and try making cushions with welting. Wish me luck! I forgot how much fun upholstery is!

I have a question. When folding the corners and sewing across the seam allowance, can't you splay open the seam instead of folding it to one side? Great video. I love watching and learning.
@SailriteDIY4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that could be done. However, the rest of the seam allowance along that side will want to take a single turn along side the foam, it will not splay open along the length of the foam, as it did when you forced it to do so at the corner. Because of that it may not be an advantage, but rather a hinderance. If you fold it one direction, as seen in the video, then the seam allowance will always want to fold that same direction along the length of the foam. In the end I believe what we show in the video is better, because of those facts. But, you are free to try it with a splayed corner seam, that is the beauty of DIY. Thanks for your comment!!!!
@Kauffdrop4 жыл бұрын
@@SailriteDIY awesome. Thank you for that reply. I guess the use of double sided tape down the length of the seam could work, but might be a waste of tape. I was asking for mainly automotive upholstery use and also home use. I like both. I have the Sailrite Fabricator. It's still in the box cause my sewing room isn't set up yet. I can't wait to use it

My old cushion's back is narrower than the front. It is not square. How do you compensate for that in your fabric calculator application?
@SailriteDIY2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michell, The 30 minute box cushion method can only be used if you have a square or rectangular cushion. You would have to make a regular box cushion to accommodate for your specific shape. This is the calculator you should use, with video below it. www.fabric-calculator.com/boxcushions/index.html

Nice detailed video (as always)! I was wondering about the ventilation hole recommendation for vinyl fabric and medium density foam. Can you use a more "airy" zipper to let air in and out of the cushion? Like, use a zipper that has more space between the teeth. Does that even exist? Or if using that almost air-tight zipper, how about not zipping it all the way shut?
@SailriteDIY4 жыл бұрын
I do not think I have ever seen a more open teeth zipper, sorry. But leaving a portion of the zipper open is an excellent idea. That should help keep the cushion from blowing up.

What about sewing over the basting tape? Will it cause some problems with my needle?
@SailriteDIY13 күн бұрын
When sewing a cushion you must not sew through the double sided tape on the seams or the glue will show up when you turn the cushion right side out. However, when sewing the zipper in place or sewing a top stitch you will sew through the seamstick. Usually the glue on the needle is cleaned off with every pass through the fabric. If it builds up on the needle I use a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol on it to clean the needle or goo gone.

hi guys my question is does it take more fabric to use this method then the tradtional way of making a cushion
@SailriteDIY3 жыл бұрын
In some situations it may (depending on the size of the cushion), but it is not as much a fabric saver, but instead a time saver in the way the cushion is made.

What is the purpose of subtracting the half inch from the foam calculation? I have new foam that is Dacron wrapped. I am not sure what measurement to put into the calculator. Thanks for your help.
@SailriteDIY2 жыл бұрын
In most cases we want the foam to be 1/2" larger in both width and length. So.... if your desired cushion size is 22" x 24" and you were cutting new foam you would cut the foam to 22 1/2" x 24 1/2". However, if you are using old foam, already cut to size, you need to enter in the fabric calculator a size that is 1/2" smaller in length and width, so it will calculate correctly the fabric size. To make this simple, just make sure the foam size in the fabric calculator equals the foam that has already been cut to size.
@melissahoward30082 жыл бұрын
@@SailriteDIY Thanks! I assume that you want the fabric smaller so that the foam fits tightly. This video is awesome and the calculator has been very helpful! I am looking forward to trying it out. Cheers.
@TwistedMinded Жыл бұрын
why if you're using the older original foam do you subtract that quarter inch from the width and length before adding into the calculator? I understand this is an older video but maybe somebody will see this question
@SailriteDIY Жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, The calculator automatically adds 1/2" to both directions on the foam, so when you are using old foam you need to subtract that 1/2" to equal your current foam. This is done to give your cushion cover a tight fit.
