Making NON-SKID GELCOAT MOLD to repair transom steps - Episode 45

In this episode we make a non-skid mold to re-make our sugar scoop steps on our Lagoon 450 hurricane damaged catamaran. We also announce the winner of our Patreon free sail competition in Panama, and get one step closer to being able to spray the entire hulls with fresh gelcoat!
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged 2012 Lagoon 450 Catamaran bought in Tortola, BVI at the beginning of 2018. Colin and his friend spent 4 months getting her seaworthy, before setting sail across the Caribbean. Follow our journey as we continue to fix her and eventually circumnavigate the globe!

You need to get those dogs on Front line or Nex Gard. Ticks will bite but will die almost immediately and being around sand it will take care of the sand flees. One pill that looks like a dog treat once a month and you are done. Give it to them the same day you give them heartworm med.

You can pick up a half dozen lobster from the guys diving for them for under $20us. Hell of a deal. We lived on lobster while we where sailing through this area. Just seen the float gauge that you put into your water tank ,You might need to have a Tube around the outside of it to stop surge showing the sideways movement while on passage so the gauge will just read the up and down movement in the water tank , But to you guys lol. great Vlog as well.

I dont think termites get into hard woods like teaks, but that boats got a lot of ply in it. Still would be worth a rebuild for the right person. That hull is bullet proof. And nice work on that nonskid job. Looks sweet...

When using 'crimp' connectors on a sea going vessel, squeeze a bit of 'Dielectric Grease' into the tube fitting first, you won't have to worry about corrosion from then on. Worked on my Balboa for ten years...

Thank you all for great education and entertainment. You must get a lot of free advice from viewers but permit me my 2 cents worth. I watched you change the shaft seal on a super yacht which interested me. The next time you have to stop water coming in try wrapping the under water shaft/ tube connection (after removal of barnacles etc ) with rubber banding like exercise bands. If there are none on board there should be a roll of latex band in the boat's first aid kit which is used as a tourniquet for bleeding control after there has been an amputation. Bicycle inner tube could also work. After using the spare seal that was on the shaft, I imagine the boat has to be hauled out and a spare seal put on the shaft which could be done the next time the bottom is scrubbed. Take care. Wow, I've been catching up to the current releases - from 0 to 45 now in a few days. You're getting better and better, buddy. Try to keep the sound the same as the video moves along, as my fingers are getting worn out turning the volume control to it doesn't make me go deaf. Otherwise, your work is very interesting. I hope a good radar is in your future. They also have some great warning devices to let you know where other boats are, who they are, and their course.

Seen quite a few decks done with it, softer on bare feet too, looks professional, if you haven't used it before, trial & error - on a similar surface before you do the deck.

It is just standard white gelcoat that he rolled into the mold to make the actual piece. plenty of wax to be able to remove it.

So we are talking about GELcoat and not paint ! Do they spray it in thin layers ? Is the cost expensive ? How long does it take to harden before you can sand it ?

@@mikeferguson2828 No, it's polyester like the final finish on hulls etc, roll or brush it on, roller best, sometimes needs 2 coats to get the cover needed especially on non skid surfaces, then glass laminates to suit the need. Don't use waxed gelcoat, funny stuff that wax, it's in the resin to help set the resin when hardening, un-waxed resin on the surface doesn't set, the air stops it, so when the next coat is applied, gelcoat or fibreglass - it chemically bonds to that un-waxed surface, no sanding to remove wax needed then. I read somewhere long ago, if a pot of resin without hardener (mekp) was sent into space it would set hard real quick..... waxed or not.
