Great to hear buddy! If you have all the ingredients, just go for it, make sure to wear proper PPE as the reaction is quiet violent :)

Hi, great video! May I ask, if is there a reason for putting tin and zinc in the end? Asking because of the zinc flash🤔
@Metalstacker
@Metalstacker 2 жыл бұрын
I was afraid that when putting in the zinc from the start all would be cooked away during the melt of the copper. I think there is less zinc evaporated when adding it in at the very last bit.

Do you always wear a respirator? Or only when tin is with it? only need an respirator(mask) for me and I'm curious😁
@Metalstacker
@Metalstacker 3 жыл бұрын
When I melt copper or aluminium I will not wear a mask as there is little to no toxic fumes. You want to wear a respirator when zinc or lead is involved as they give off toxic fumes. Not sure about tin, but from what I saw, tin casters normally do not wear masks.

So I first saw this reaction with the zinc on another channel and they said it "boils away". I never got an answer so I'll ask it here too,, if it boils away, what is the point in adding it? Is there really zinc in nordic gold??
@Metalstacker
@Metalstacker 3 жыл бұрын
Hello there and thanks for asking! Yeah there is 5% zinc in nordic gold. As copper melts at 1083°C and Zinc had a boiling point of 907°C it will surely evaporate a bit of the zinc. I think the formula of nordic gold (89% copper, 5% aluminium, 5% zinc and 1% tin) takes into account that some zinc will boil off. (Nordic gold is a widely used alloy in real coin minters) I do not think all zinc boils off, what would be the benefit of adding it? When all metals are mixed, the melting point of the alloy gets much lower, so a future melt had almost no zinc boiling off as the temperature is just below zinc boiling point. Whenever you make a new batch of nordic gold, the copper must melt so you will always have some zinc burning off. Hope this helps out a bit. I will also ask a guy on Instagram who studies metallurgics, maybe he knows a better answer :)

@Metalstacker
@Metalstacker 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! As Zinc has a much lower melting point than copper, it will react violently with the molten copper. I had done this a couple of times before, looks kinds scary, but with good PPE it is just fun :)
@mountaindewdude76
@mountaindewdude76 3 жыл бұрын
@@Metalstacker I appreciate your reply! I'm very anxious to make some Nordic Gold. Its so pretty but I'm also nervous because of that violent reaction. However, I do have leather boots, long leather apron, respirator, face shield, thick leather gloves and sleeves. I'm pretty confident that I have suitable PPE because I'm very serious about safety. I did my first ever melt last week. It was just some scrap aluminum but I'm happy with how it all went.
@Metalstacker
@Metalstacker 3 жыл бұрын
@@mountaindewdude76 Sounds like a proper kit for safety, good job mate! Good to hear you melted some metal. If you do not want a violent reaction (and toxic fumes) you could first try aluminium bronze, or bronzal. It is made of 11-9% aluminium and 89-91% copper by weight. It will look kinda like nordic gold. Make sure to stir it well after putting in the aluminium.
